Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

An Important Message from the SRHS PTO
Please Read On...

Our last meeting for the 2016/2017 year is happening on Wednesday, May 17th at 6pm at the High School Library.  We will be voting for a new President and Vice President. If you are interested in either position please let me know. I am hoping we have a couple of interested individuals who will want to continue making the PTO the best it can be.  My biggest concern is if we don't have anyone step up and we have to look at not having a PTO any longer.  This would be a huge shame. The PTO has done a lot to help the teachers and students.  Here are just  a few things we have done:

        * Through our mini grant program we have dispersed $3,143 to teachers for science videos where the students can watch a live knee replacement or and kidney transplant, or we have helped the special education group put together a 55 gallon saltwater tank that is also a live eco system. WE have helped the class of 2017 with gift baskets they could raffle off and make more money for their class. We brought in a poetry group for the English department.

        * We provide dinners for the whole staff on the evenings when there is an open house at the high school.  The teachers don't have time to go home and eat or go out to eat before parents come to talk to them about their student.  Our teachers do so much for our students its a small thing we can do for them.

This is just a few of the things we have done to help make Sanborn Regional High School better.

Senior Spotlight : Samantha Broyer
An Article By Social Studies Teacher Brian Gray

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Samantha Broyer is a senior graduating this year at Sanborn. She has been a member of the Girls Basketball Program for the last four years and also plays tennis for the school. She is an active member of the Sanborn Community volunteering in various student organizations such as Life of a Student Leadership Club. She is a dedicated student and wants to enter a career in Early Education when she graduates from college. This year she has taking advantage of the Career Pathways program at Sanborn and has been gaining career experience in an Elementary School. She also coached a 3rd and 4th grade team this year for our Sanborn Rec Basketball Program. Sam will be pursuing a degree in Early Education and has offers to play basketball at the next level. She already has interest from multiple schools including Lesley University, Eastern Connecticut and New England College.

Samantha Broyer was one of the Captains of this year's Girls Varsity team that finished with a recorded of 15-5 and made the second round of the playoffs. She was a major factor this year on and off the court as a leader and integral to the team's success. The Girls Varsity Squad won their first home playoff game in over two decades. She always cared about her teammates and always had a pulse on the team. She was always supportive and could always be heard positively communicating to her teammates on and off the courts during games and practices. She has also been crucial to the development of our youth program. She constantly volunteers her time to work with the kindergarten skills sessions, coaching in Sanborn basketball camps and refereeing for our rec program. She constantly worked on her game to improve in all areas, coming to open gyms, attending out of season AAU and other opportunities besides the normal season commitments. She was also valuable member of Sanborn's first Junior Varsity 19-0 Undefeated Basketball Season as a Captain and starting Center her Sophomore Year. .

Anyone who had the opportunity to observe her working with our young students would agree that she will make an excellent elementary school educator. She always develops a great rapport with who she is working with and is always a favorite instructor after each session. Samantha Broyer is a role model to younger students and Sanborn is so proud of what she has accomplished during her four years as a student and an athlete. Samantha Broyer will be missed in the Sanborn Community when she graduates but her footprint will be felt in generations of future student athletes to come. We have no doubt that Samantha will be successful in the field of education and can not wait to hear about her future accomplishments.

Greenhouse Project Update
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear friends of the greenhouse project at Sanborn:

My apologies for not proving you an update sooner since our last planning meeting in February, but I haven't had a whole lot to report out on.

Since our last meeting, a small group of us have been looking into various greenhouse companies in hopes of finding one that would be willing to not only provide us the materials to build our greenhouse, but also to share our vision and help us develop the community partnership programs to make the greenhouse project a true community effort and resource.

Through your networks, we were introduced to a company in Maine called Arch Solar. This company was very excited to hear about our vision and our plans, and they very much want to be a part of our work. They came to Sanborn last month and gave us a demonstration of how they may be able to work with our community to develop appropriate greenhouse programs for both our school and our community. They also shared some new technologies that they are implementing with some of their greenhouse companies around the world, as well as some innovative building technologies. One of their designs actually made use of refurbished shipping containers for the sides of the structure. If you click on the hyperlinks in this letter, you can explore Arch Solar's site in more detail.

We agreed that the next logical step was to take a trip to one of Arch Solar's projects to see their work for ourselves. I am bringing a team of teachers from Sanborn up to their Little River Flower Farm project later this month in Buxton, Maine.

We hope that by the end of this school year, we will have made a final decision on what company we are going to use, and we will have final cost estimates for the project. From there, we can start a fundraising campaign to raise the rest of the funds we will need to build the greenhouse, as well as explore grants that we could take advantage of to provide the ongoing operational costs once the greenhouse is complete.

We are excited to be moving forward with this project this year. Thank you, to all of you, for the insights you have already provided us and the resources and advice you will offer us in the days, weeks, and months ahead. We look forward to having a completed greenhouse that we can all be proud of by this time next year.
Senior Spotlight : Kira Scully
An Article By Guidance Counselor Amanda Fullery

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

If you've ever wandered through the hallways of Sanborn looking for a smiling face, chances are you have found one on Kira. A driving force in creating positive school culture; Kira constantly makes it her mission to form as many positive relationships with peers and staff as she can. On more than one occasion I have witnessed or heard about Kira going out of her way to comfort a peer in the hallway (including strangers), making a new student feel welcomed, or taking a younger classmen under her wing to get them involved at Sanborn.

Teacher Jack Kelly had this to say about Kira: "I have known Kira for 3 years, and see her everyday, yet I have never had her in class.  I first met Kira as a Student Council Member her sophomore year.  She joined our Lunch Bunch Junior year and has lunch with her friends in our area everyday. Kira lights up the room with her smile.  She is compassionate, engaged, actively involved and just fun to be with. We will miss her peals of  laughter ringing down the halls next year. "

In addition to maintaining good grades in all of her classes, Kira has been involved in many different things throughout her high school career such as drama club (where she is an officer this year), Big Brother Big Sister, Life of a Student, student council and SST. Kira even took an interest in photography this year, taking Senior Portraits for other students to use in the yearbook!

For the past two years Kira has been attending SST for Early Childhood and hopes to continue down this path in her future. Next year Kira will be volunteering with the City Year Program, working with children in an inner-city school in Florida. Following her participation in City Year Kira plans to attend a four year college to become a teacher. I have no doubt that she will be successful and any student would be lucky to have her as their teacher!
Northern Essex Community College Offers Special Deal For SRHS!
Students Can Take NECC Classes While attending SRHS at A HUGE Discount!

Dear Students,

Mrs. Catena and I are excited to announce a collaboration between SRHS and Northern Essex Community College that would allow Sanborn students to take NECC classes at NECC for a huge discount on tuition. I have attached a flyer that has more information on this early college program. There are some open house dates at NECC to be mindful of, as well as contacts of who to reach out to at NECC for more information.

Here is a secret: You don't have to wait to graduate from high school to take a college class --- in fact, it is a better idea to start taking college classes while you are still in high school, if you can.

I would advise that you talk with your guidance counselor about which classes may be best for you. Depending on the situation, you may be able to find NECC classes that meet SRHS graduation requirements, which would allow you to be dual-enrolled!

This is an exciting partnership that I hope many of you will take advantage of.

Please see me with questions,

-Mr. Stack

Graduation Ceremony Will Be Friday, June 16
An Important Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

To: Graduating Seniors
From: Brian M Stack, Principal

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 16, 2017. Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive six (6) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 6 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Did You Know? A Budget Committee Update
By Annie Collyer, Chairperson, Sanborn Budget Committee

Did you know that the Sanborn Regional School District Budget Committee held its organizational meeting on April 20 and discussed goals for their task of preparing and presenting the school budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19?

The first order of business was to elect officers: Annie Collyer of Newton is Chairman, and Charlton Swasey of Kingston is Vice-Chairman.

School Board Representative Tammy Mahoney reported that the School Board will begin looking at the budget on October 4, rather than mid-November as in past years. The Budget Committee will review, present a preliminary budget proposal at a Public Hearing in January, and then amend to present their budget proposal to the voters at the first voting session in February.

The Budget Committee established a subcommittee to write a draft of committee guidelines to present to the Budget Committee for possible adoption.

One goal endorsed unanimously was to have a meeting with the new Business Administrator in August, on accounting categories, changes and communication.

The minutes of the meeting are posted on the SAU17 website, WWW.SAU17.ORG
