Sunrise Park Elementary Teacher Named PBCSD's Teacher of the Week
Sunrise Park Elementary School teacher Angela Brent-Harris has been named the School District of Palm Beach County's Teacher of the Week!
A kindergarten teacher at Sunrise Park, Ms. Brent-Harris was
nominated by her son, Matias, and Ms. Kerry Green, the parent of one of her students.
"I want to thank Ms. Brent-Harris for everything she did for my son," Ms. Green shared. "He's now in fifth grade and ready to go to middle school, but he
still talks about her. She has a very calming way with children (and adults)...with life the way it is, everyone needs that, especially young children. From the beginning, she taught my son and his classmates how to take a deep breath, enjoy and live life to the fullest. Every single school in the U.S. needs a teacher like this. As an attorney, I see negativity all the time. I watch her "Color Me Happy" videos and remind myself that life is way too short to let negativity affect me. She is inspirational and amazing...I wish I had a teacher like her growing up."
Ms. Brent-Harris's son raved about his mom. "I love that you treat your students like they're your own flesh and blood," he shared. "You have an after school club where you help kids de-stress and release anxiety and anger, as you build their confidence and self-esteem. We call you the child whisperer at home, for you truly have a gift. Thank you for being the best mom and best teacher in the universe!"

Community Comes Together to Bring Holiday Joy to Jupiter Elementary
When
North Region Instructional Superintendent Patrick Galatowitsch
discovered that not all of the students at
Jupiter Elementary School
would be receiving a gift this holiday season, he immediately jumped into action. With donations down this year, the charity that normally donates toys to low-income students in the county did not have enough toys to deliver to the school.
Dr. Galatowitsch sought the assistance of District leaders a
nd the community, going door- to-door in his neighborhood Wednesday evening to collect donations. The Palm Beach County community rose to the occasion, donating more than $7,500 in one evening for the purchase of toys for Jupiter students. Students from Jupiter Community High School shopped at Walmart to buy about 700 toys for the children. The gifts were delivered to campus Thursday afternoon, where students met volunteers with grateful hearts and smiles. Watch the video...

Palm Beach County Students Participate in "Wreaths Across America" Ceremony at South Florida National Cemetery
Each December, on National Wreaths Across America Day, Palm Beach County students participate in a patriotic tribute at the South Florida National Cemetery.
Donated wreaths typically adorn the grave of each fallen veteran. Unfortunately, donations were lower this year, and many graves did not receive a wreath. Despite the shortage of wreaths, there was no shortage of gratitude for the service of each brave man and woman laid to rest at the cemetery. Watch the video...

"Jungle" Bells: District Partners With Lion Country Safari to Bring Chimps and Cheer to Classrooms
Elementary students across Palm Beach County recently took part in a unique, STEM-based holiday activity, as the School District partnered with Lion Country Safari to bring the annual "Christmas With the Chimps" event to local classrooms.
Students in grades K-5 created holiday enrichment packages for the chimpanzees at Lion Country Safari, wrapping gifts of toys, lettuce, stuffed animals and blankets for the primates. On December 8, District personnel joined the Lion Country Safari staff in distributing the presents to the chimps, filming the presentation for a virtual field trip that was broadcast in classrooms on December 15. The experience allowed students to not only see the chimpanzees open their gifts, but to ask questions and learn more about their environment and way of life.
"The students are learning about animals. They're learning about the environment they live in, and how to really connect with them," shared
Julia Mate, the
District's K-12 STEM Program Planner.

Pine Jog Elementary Supports Hurricane Relief Efforts, Collecting "Coins for the Caribbean"
Students at
Pine Jog Elementary School are keeping the victims of
Hurricane Irma and
Hurricane Maria in mind this holiday season, working to collect money that will be used in rebuilding and recovery efforts. The "Coins for the Caribbean" project, spearheaded by
Catherine Turnipseed and
Lori Vanis, carries a very personal meaning for several of the students at the school.
Fifth grader
James Vega Lind and his fami
ly gathered supplies and traveled to Puerto Rico to help relatives. He says he'll never forget how he felt to see the damage.
"Terrible," he shares. "Because of all the things that came in...how dirty it was. How they had to live there and sleep there every day."
Pine Jog's Owl Team is motivated to serve and make a difference.
"I believe that kids can do the same work that adults can do, and they can make a difference," student
Yulissa Dominguez shares.
