Rector's Easter 2017 Message

The events of Holy Week and Easter Day are vivid indicators of how life can move from joy to sorrow, our hopes and  expectations could all be dashed in a twinkling of an eye, a good situation could become a bad one, what once appeared to be easy can become difficult, what may look like victory one minute could be defeat the next, those who speak well of you in one breath may speak ill of you in another breath, what may be alive today could be no longer with us by tomorrow. All of these emotions and life's situations can and did take place in the space of less than a week, which we call Holy Week.

Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem, with joy and celebration. The people waved their branches and spread garments on the way as they welcomed him into Jerusalem with shouts of "Hosanna." But while people looked at Jesus' entry into Jerusalem as one of joy and triumph and celebration, Jesus saw this event in a completely different way. Our Lord entered into Jerusalem for a reason, for a purpose. He showed a different side to this joy and celebration, he demonstrated a side of humility and love, suffering and death.

What appeared to be a week that began with so much fanfare and optimism will turn into simplicity and pessimism, betrayal and denial, suffering and death. The same people who hailed him on Sunday will shout "Crucify him" on Friday. Holy Week teaches us that life has its ups and downs, its mountaintop and valley experiences, its highs and lows, the good and the bad, its victories and defeats, its challenges and easy points.

But Holy Week also calls us to remember that the defeats, the lows, the downs, the sorrows, are not the end. Easter comes in all its glory and tells us Christ has risen, he has conquered all that is negative, with the help of God. The resurrection of Jesus reminds us that no matter how difficult life is, if we could muster enough faith to put our trust in God, and live in obedience to him and his will, we will see our lives change in incredible ways. This is what Jesus did by placing his life into his Father's hands. As Jesus depended on his Father and God helped his Son, so too, we are expected to depend on God our Father and he is always willing to help us, his adopted children, through baptism.

As we celebrate the holiest of weeks and the premier day and season in the Christian calendar. may we seek to follow Jesus' example and grow in our relationship with him and with God our Father. Let us remember that life can be wholesome for us  and filled with hope if only we would place our lives into the hands of God. This is a wonderful and reassuring message, which Easter teaches us.

May you, your families, and loved ones, have a joyous and blessed Eastertide.

Christ is risen, Alleluia!
Easter blessings!

Father Tony
