Committee Corner
What an exciting few weeks it's been for U.S. show jumping!  Congratulations to McLain Ward on his truly impressive win in the Longines FEI World Cup Finals and his rise to the top of the Longines World Rankings.

As we celebrate these recent successes, we also wish a happy retirement to two horses who made quite a name for themselves, their riders, and U.S. show jumping, in international competition. The iconic, crowd favorite Flexible, former World Cup Final champion with Rich Fellers, will be formally retired at the $100,000 Del Mar National Horse Show on May 6. Cortes 'C (Abigail Wexner, owner), Beezie Madden's famed mount who earned the "Best Horse of the Games" title at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, has retired after helping the U.S. win a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Thank you to these amazing horses and riders for representing the U.S. at the highest levels of show jumping! We hope our younger riders are inspired by these great horses and riders and take advantage of programs like the Emerging Athletes Program, USEF Show Jumping Talent Search, USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medal, USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships, and the FEI North American Child, Junior, and Young Rider Championships to help prepare them for professional and international competition.

McLain Ward and HH Azur Win FEI World Cup Finals

The 2017 Longines FEI World Cup Finals (March 29-April 2) in Omaha, Nebraska was one for the history books. In front of a cheering home crowd, McLain Ward finally clinched the World Cup Championship at his 17th World Cup Final competition.

McLain is the first American rider to win a World Cup Final on U.S. soil since 1980. After coming close several times in the past, McLain accomplished the feat in impressive fashion, going clear and winning every single round with HH Azur (Double H Farm & Francois Mathy, owners).

Course designer Alan Wade set very technical courses which the pair worked hard to conquer, staying cool and collected the entire competition. The pressure, already sky high, rocketed as they continued to go clear over four rounds of jumping. The final course was anything but an easy ride - in order to win, he had to go clear. Four faults would have forced a jump off with Romain Duguet (SUI), who ended up second, and eight faults would have lost him the title. McLain credited his incredible mare, affectionately known as Annie around the barn, and his longtime team of staff and supporters as the inspiration for his final clear round that earned him the title. Congratulations McLain!

Also, congratulations to the Zone 10 riders who participated in World Cup Finals:  Jamie Barge, Karl Cook, Audrey Coulter, Jenni Martin-McAllister   and Nayel Nassar

USHJA Zone 10 offers grants to help applicants participate in the program.

Reigning EAP National Champion, Zone 10 rider Gracie Marlowe, applied to the program for the first time last year.

"I read up on the amazing opportunities the program offered, particularly the horsemanship skills I could learn, and decided to apply," Gracie said. "I think it's amazing that this program is designed to find hard working riders who truly want to succeed in our sport, no matter what their financial background is. I was thrilled just to get in!"

Gracie and her sister, Emma, participated in the EAP Regional Training Session at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center last year. Gracie was then chosen to attend the EAP National Training Session in Ohio.  To read more about Gracie's journey to EAP Nationals and her thoughts on the program, click here to read her feature piece from last December's Zone 10 E-news.

The USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medal is an exciting competition that provides Junior riders with the opportunity to develop their equitation skills over a jumper-style course. This year marks the first ever USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medal Finals, with one final being held on either coast. Riders qualify for the final once they have accumulated 10 points during the qualifying period (December 1, 2016, to July 23, 2017) and can choose either the West or the East Final. The inaugural 3'3"Jumping Seat Medal Finals will be similar to the Talent Search Finals and will give Junior riders the chance to practice this style of competition at a lower fence height.
