College Commitment Signing Day

On Thursday, Garces celebrated the Class of 2017 with our College Commitment Signing Day.  Our gym was packed with our student body and senior parents. Every senior made a post-secondary commitment - four year universities, four year colleges, two year colleges, or the Unites States Military. Our special guest speaker was our State Assemblywoman, Mrs. Shannon Grove. She gave the seniors a wonderful heart-felt speech.  Our other special speakers were Garces ASB Co-Presidents Patrick Burke and Giovanna Sacco.  We had a special opening prayer by Olivia Muller followed by Garces senior Savannah Nyagwachi singing the National Anthem. It was a special day on our campus.  We are so proud of our seniors and we wish them all the best. A big shout out to Ms. Caitlin Witwer and the Garces ASB class - they spent days creating all the college posters and hours decorating the gym.  And a special thank you to the Garces Counselors who tracked down all the post high school information and created beautiful certificates for all the seniors to sign.
Class of 2017 Senior Slide Show

Garces senior and yearbook editor, Kyra Sales, created the slide show we showed at the Senior Farewell Mass.  If you were unable to join us, please check out the slide show video below.  Kyra did a great job capturing four years of wonderful memories.

Hall of Honor

Garces held its 10th annual Hall of Honor Awards Banquet on Saturday night.  The Garces Alumni Board voted in four new members - Mr. Frank Maitia, Jr. '60; Mr. Tom Anchrodoquy '65, Mr. Arnold Cattani '64, and the late Mrs, Yolanda (Papasergia) Griffiths '51.  The legacy family the Alumni Board presented with the Garces Alumni Award was the Mac & Stella McMurtrey Family.  Over the next few weeks we will publish the information listed in the program about each of the very deserving inductees. It was a lovely night, emceed by alumnus Jim Sakowski '70 and catered by alumna Lisa Borda '94. It was really a special night on our campus. The introductions of each inductee really captured all the inductees mean to the rich history of Garces. The acceptance speeches reminded all of us why a Garces education and Garces friendships are priceless. We ended the evening by all joining together and singing the alma mater.  It was truly a wonderful event for all in attendance.
Push Up Contest

On Wednesday, the US Army came to promote the US Army All-Star Arena Bowl and held a push up challenge at lunch.  Students had two minutes to see who could complete the most push ups.  The winners received two tickets to Magic Mountain.  The winners were Scott Boylan (107), Jack Tobias (106), and Lauren Burson (99).  The Arena Bowl is next Friday, May 12th at Rabobank. We have 9 Rams who are participating in the Arena Bowl!  Ram cheerleaders who will be cheering at the Arena Bowl are Nevada Allison and Danielle Lacayo. Ram football players who were drafted to play in the Arena Bowl are Robert Moseley, Michael Barnett, Joseph Tobias, Michael Georgino, Cameron Roberson, Brandon Villalobos, and Josh Gonzales.
Sack Lunch Crew for St. Vincent's

On Friday, members of the Garces Parent Club donated items for our students to make sack lunches for St. Vincent de Paul to provide lunches to the people they serve through the St. Vincent de Paul Center. We had students from the Yearbook Class and the ASB Class help out this week.  We will add this as a regular community service opportunity next year.
Thank you Mr. Sean Todd!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Garces parent Mr. Sean Todd, came dressed as El Chano and brought delicious home made breakfast burritos for the teachers and the staff. It was a three day process for him to make them as he made a variety from scratch, and each one was scrumptious! It was so kind of him to treat the staff and it was very much appreciated. Thank you to Garces Parent Club Coordinator, Mrs. Michelle Pisano, who arranged it.

Poetry Superstars

Below is the next set of poems written by the Class of 2018 during their sophomore year.

Mema
By: Lebrevon Austin
People come and go just like money does.
When I was twelve I was playing football
But when my grandma died I just couldn't think at al.l
When that happened to the fam it's like we hit a brick wall.
I was at the house that day till 8,
My little cousins told me the next day they heard screaming like she got shot.
They told me all this happened at around 11 o'clock.
Then she was gone, now her heart is with God.

Word Legos
By: Chaten Sibia
Night goes like a film in a theater, it keeps me from seeing others.
Small noises hurt my ears,
when it goes away I feel like I can actually use
my eyes.
Like I see outside and know who's at the door.
It was the same person at night but the dark
didn't let me know.
The dark made me think the guest at the door
was hiding,
We turned our sun on and realized it was my
uncle,
After all this drama the sky put on daylight
makeup.
The daylight soiled on my lawn and I was
lighted with joy.

Ten Little Poetry Lines
By: Jack Logan
The ocean was glistening like a glass field.
It was as pure as winters snow.
It causes the urge to submerge oneself in it like a bath,
The roaring waves calls from afar,
On the land bar as far as the eye can see
Is where the ocean is calling.
Through the streets I flee, dropping all obligations because here is where I want to be, nowhere else but the sea,
Out in the open waters is where the real peace is to me.
When the sun kisses the sea,
the sunset is so clean like a sky.

Memory Poem
By: Jack Tobias
There was a breeze and the night air was
chilling,
As I take each step hoping I am not too early
I am wearing short sleeve, collared shirt as blue
as her eyes,
and khaki pants that resemble the glow her skin
emits,
I approach the door and take three heavy breaths.
I hear people inside.
I give three hard knocks rattling the door
frame.
The door slowly creeps open and light starts to
leak out.
There, I meet eyes with her, the girl that changes it all.
She makes every breath I was fighting for
irrelevant and all the sudden my worries wash
away.
I didn't care about what I am doing later that
night or later that week,
I just care about that one moment, the present
And in that very moment the feeling I get leads
me to believe that I have truly found the love of
my life.
But people change.

Ode to my Bed
By: Lauren Grijalva
Oh, beautiful bed,
With your white, soft sheet.
Just like a cloud, fluffy and big
The place I start; the place I end.
Every new day, wrapped up in my sheets
Like a cocoon, in my blankets,
I feel safe, like I have a personal bubble.
I can always rely on it, like a best friend.
Watching movies in my bed, sleeping,
Laying on my pillows, this is where I'm happy.
