Students at ELCA have the privilege of growing up in a richly diverse student population. As you walk our halls, you get a sense of what Heaven will be like as you see students who come from many different racial and cultural backgrounds. In a focused effort to strengthen our diverse culture, we have established a Council on Diversity to discuss critical issues within our school. The council consists of both parents and staff members who meet on a regular basis to discuss ongoing issues and create strategies for future improvement. Our foundational principle is that all people are created in the image of God. As image bearers, we all have great value in the eyes of the Creator and thus we should treat those that are different than us with that mindset.
The word GRACE describes our focus on diversity within the school...
G - gender
R - race
A - age and ability
C - culture
E - economic ability
All of these groups are represented within our school and are recognized within God's word. Our goal is to teach our students that God has created us in His image and for His glory. As students begin to grasp that concept, they are able to respond to one another in a truly Biblical way.

We are off to a wonderful start with our Greater Things Capital Campaign. Although our 10 day focus period for the Campaign has passed, it is not too late to make your contribution or pledge. The improvements that will be made with these funds will allow for necessary capital expenditures that will enhance both the security and learning environment for our students.
We have a number of families who have already made their contributions to this Campaign, while many others have made their commitment and plan to fulfill their pledges later in the year.

Odyssey of the Mind - ELCA 2016-2017
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students. Teams select a problem, create a solution, and then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. The purpose of the program is to provide students with an exciting learning experience that promises to be challenging and fun.
This year, three fifth grade teams were formed. The teams competed on March 18, 2017, at Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. Teams competed in problem solving as well as the spontaneous portion of the competition.
The coaches, Mrs. Rawls, Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Lilly, were the driving force behind the teams. While the students did all the work themselves, the coaches offered encouragement and guidance. The coaches are very proud of their teams' accomplishments.

Spanish National Honor Society
Congratulations to Brody Duncan, Luke Gurak, Cameron Halron, Kristy Lieu, Nancy Patel, Andrea Sanchez, Antonio Sanchez, and Dalton Shaw for being part of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society).
These students have shown and proven a deep interest in the beautiful Spanish Language, as well as dedication, responsibility, and integrity.
They are enrolled in High School - Honors Spanish III with a grade average of 90 or above.

MENTAL MATHLETES
The Mental Math Challenge is a math enrichment program for students in third, fourth, and fifth grades. This program challenges the students to further develop their mental math abilities. It also creates an excitement about math.
Prior to each challenge, each classroom holds competitions to determine a class winner. The winner from each class competes with the other class winners from their grade in a Mental Math Challenge. As a result of the challenge, a Mental Math Champion wis determined for each grade.
Our First Semester Mental Math Challenge was held on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Competing in this challenge were the monthly winners from the challenges held 1st semester. It was an exciting challenge! As a result of this challenge, a Semester Champion was determined for each grade.

STEM AFTER SCHOOL?
Students in the After-School Enrichment Program love the new building materials that were purchased recently. MagSnaps and Wikki Stix are used to stimulate imaginations and problem solving in engineering challenges.

Book Character Day 2017
The 16th Annual Book Character Day Parade was a joyous occasion with appearances by Bible characters, patriots, princesses and all sorts of other book characters!

EQUESTRIAN EXCELLENCE
Eighth grade student, AJ Bateholts is happiest
when he is riding. Most recently, AJ participated in horse shows in Lexington KY and
Murfreesboro TN. Way to go, AJ!

K3 SWEETHEARTS
K-3 classes in the Early Learning Academy made 75 Valentine's Day cards for patients at the Shepherd Center. They made "I love you" sign language cards from their handprints and included the Bible verse "John 15:12-13" on it, which says "My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. Greater lover has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."
The Shepherd Center is ranked among the nation's top rehabilitation hospitals for spinal cord and brain injury. It is one of the only hospitals that provide recreational therapy to their patients.

Fueling Student Athletes
About 30% of teen athletes skip breakfast and 25% skip lunch. That's a big mistake. Student athletes have different nutritional needs, especially on training and game days. To perform their best, they need the right fuel.
There are three key components to the ideal "performance plate": grains or starches, proteins, and fruits and vegetables. Adequate hydration is critical both in preparation for, and in recovery from, physical activity as well. On training days, it's recommended that athletes eat equal amounts of grains/starches, protein, and vegetables. But on game days, they need more energy. For intense training and competition, glucose stores need to be topped off. Eating moderate amounts of fiber, fat, and protein keep athletes satiated during a game.
With a new program called Performance Spotlight that SAGE Dining Services is launching this fall, their team of Registered Dietitians will construct ideal "performance plates" from the day's offerings that incorporate the necessary nutrients in appropriate proportions for student athletes.
They will include a healthy balance of lean protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables. These plates will consider a range of activity levels and draw upon guidelines laid out by the United States Olympic Committee; the National Collegiate Athletic Association; the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group; and other major sports nutrition associations.
With this program, athletes won't have to guess what to eat when faced with so many options in the dining hall. They can see the best options and portions from each day's menu.
