Golden State Warriors
Sidelined!
|
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has withdrawn from coaching Game 4 of the
NBA championship playoffs and perhaps longer. Kerr may be again dealing with complications he suffered from back surgery before last season. A spinal fluid leak caused numerous symptoms that included debilitating headaches and nausea, which caused him to miss the first 43 games of the 2015-16 season. Interim head coach Mike Brown will now guide the team. Game 4 resumes Monday evening in Portland at 7:30 p.m. on
NBC Sports Bay Area and TNT.

San Francisco Giants Update:
The Giants' slow start has snowballed into a complete disaster after the first three weeks of the season. With the shutout on Sunday, the Giants suffered a three-game sweep to Colorado, bringing their record to a dismal 6-13. To make matters worse, the Giants lost their ace pitcher, Madison Bumgarner, to injury on Friday. Bumgarner is expected to miss six to eight weeks after bruising his ribs and spraining an AC joint in a dirt bike accident. The injuries continued into the weekend, with Denard Span spraining his right shoulder after colliding into the wall on Saturday night at Coors Field. This injury occurred in a similar fashion to Jarrett Parker's last week, who broke his collarbone after running into another left field wall. Luckily, Span is only expected to be out for a handful of games, according to manager Bruce Bochy. This coming week the Giants face the rival Dodgers and Padres at home in a desperate attempt to get back on track.

Oakland Athletics Update:
The Athletics finally caught some momentum over the past week, winning five straight over the Rangers and Mariners before dropping the final game of the series against the Mariners on Sunday. The future continues to look bright for the A's, with starters Kendall Graveman and Sonny Gray scheduled to return in the coming weeks. Graveman suffered a shoulder strain during his third start of the season, forcing him to exit that game after only five innings and be listed on the 10-day DL. He is expected to rejoin the Major League club on Tuesday, the first day he is eligible to come off the DL. Gray, meanwhile, is continuing his rehab from his injury in March, and will make possibly his final pitching appearance with the Triple-A squad on Thursday. Manager Bob Melvin expects Gray to throw 75 pitches in the start, and proposed the idea of Gray coming off the DL if the outing goes well. The A's finished the week with a 10-9 record, good for second place
in the AL West division.

Sports Prep Star -- Haley van Dyke
Campolindo-Moraga
-- Basketball -- Junior
It wasn't a matter of what Van Dyke accomplished over the two-week CIF Northern Regional Division III tournament, but the things she didn't accomplish in leading the Cougars to their first state finals appearance in 20 years. Through four regional playoff games, the 6-foot post averaged 29 points, 15.5 rebounds, 3.25 assists, 3.5 steals and 4.25 blocks. Her biggest game came in the NorCal Regional Final against visiting St. Mary's-Berkeley. Van Dyke scored a regional finals' record of 46 points and added 20 rebounds in a 78-56 win over the Panthers on March 18. She shot a sterling 71 percent from the field in that contest. Campolindo (27-7) lost 62-45 to Holy Rosary Academy-Fullerton in the state final, but the Cougars will return every impact player next season.

Great Game One! Festive Easter Sunday. Packed Oracle. Appreciative crowd.
By Dan Lindheim
Very close game despite final 12 point difference! Tied through three quarters. Too real Warriors effort to pull this one out.
Portland
's C. J. McCollum and Oakland High's Damian Lillard went off, combining for 75 points. Both were unstoppable through three quarters. In the fourth the Warriors defense finally clamped down. KD and Curry kept the Warriors in the game on offense and Draymond was all-around awesome, just missing a triple double. Energy bursts from McGee, good play from Ian Clark and Klay and defense from Iguodala made the difference.
Crowd was excited! Especially appreciative of great defense, particularly Draymond's multiple blocks and the late game hustle play with everyone diving to the floor as the loose ball caromed around.
Portland
is a good team but they need more team and less reliance on McCollum and Lillard. Query: Will it make any difference if Nurkic's "broken" leg sufficiently heals for him to play? I doubt it. Lillard and McCollum can't play any better. Dubs can improve on shooting and passing, make fewer turnovers and play more Warriors basketball (more passing, less iso). Klay, Andre, and DWest can all shoot better. Dubs will be ok.
Overarching question: How do so many normal looking fans afford these ticket prices and bring the family? Tickets start at $140 (official, retail, not resale!) for nosebleed seats. End-zone seats (excuse the mixed-sport metaphor) go for over $200 and close-in, mid-court seats can apparently cost thousands. Resale asking prices were stratospheric but I can't tell whether they actually sold. Like the drought, the Great Recession is over in these parts, at least for the almost 20,000 in attendance..
Seeing the game at Oracle offers a different perspective from TV. The game seems much faster, with rapid side to side movement of both ball and players. There is also more space and spacing than seen on TV, where the telephoto lenses compress the width of the court.
The ref-ing is definitely inconsistent. Curry routinely got mugged, grabbed, spun around, with no calls. Yet Lillard was always shooting free throws. The crowd was convinced that the refs blew call after call. However, watching TV re-plays, the refs seemed acceptable. Interestingly, the refs allowed more aggressive defense in the fourth quarter.
There were few celebrities in evidence. For the OKC Game Seven last year Clint Dempsey and other US Men's National Soccer team members were in the next seats, with Bernie Sanders and Danny Glover a few rows away. But plenty of time for this -- the Warriors will win this series and the next.
Nice little shoving match in front of us. The authorities arrived quickly. Kudos to the Section 107 yellow shirt usher who calmed things down, quickly and professionally. No one was tossed!
Two notes:
2. I caught a shot from the gun T-shirt -- cool shirt. (Black T with gold "Strength in Numbers.")
Go Dubs!
