World Masters Rankings helps
Striving to fill your needs and enhance your experience in Masters Athletics!
|
Many know how MastersRankings evolves, much based on athlete requests and feedback, to meet your needs. The two biggest, where do I stand and where do I compete, are the major focus for MastersRankings. The goal is to keep performances up-to-date so you can see how well you are doing and keep track of your competitors. Keeping the lists up-to-date is a huge undertaking but, as you can see in the By the Numbers section of this email, is improving immensely. This is much due to the growing number of people who are devoted to insert results which includes a growing number of your national statisticians - many thanks to all. Daily performances from the WMA Championships in Perth and Daegu were loaded within 12 hours of the competitions ending. This also happens with many other competitions like the World Masters Games (all available results have been inserted daily) and, this year, you'll see more complete meet results loaded the same day of a meet. More meet organizers are becoming aware and want to help ensure results are in the rankings.

Upcoming Competitions
Many interesting meets and great travel destinations
The
Upcoming Competitions is still in its infancy and needs meet organizers' and your help to be a better resource. I will continue to think about and implement ways to make this effective. It is important to have a good, central resource with these competitions.
Many of you have said you really like the
Upcoming Competition Promotions. It has been interesting working with these meet organizers and seeing how passionate they are about putting on great events for you. To reduce the number of communications you receive from me, I've put this month's meet promotions lower in this newsletter.

Ranked Athlete Spotlight
I started throwing the javelin in my early teens and reached 50 meters at 19, winning a couple of County Championships (Norway). I was rubbish at any other event. I then went in the Army for 2 years, so very little throwing, - followed by 4 years in England studying Physiotherapy, during which I had a 'partial subluxation' of C2 on C3 (same level as Christopher Reeve/Superman) when landing on my head attempting gymnastics. The two vertebrae were fused together using steel wire and bone chips from my pelvis.
Want to be featured in future Spotlights? Have a compelling or motivating story? We'd love to feature you. Email me @ john.seto@mastersrankings.com with a little about you and your compelling story and I will send you a few questions to facilitate writing the article.

Great Competitions and Travel Destinations:
|
Unique medals, wonderful souvenirs (for everyone) and a great travel destination!
Everyone is welcome - there are many reasons to attend the 38th All Japan Masters Championships.
City of Wakayama is a birth place of Japan masters track and field. The president of Japan Masters Athletics, Kiyoshi Konoike, founded the Japan masters athletics in 1977. After he competed at the 2nd World Masters Athletics in Sweden, Kiyoshi decided that he wanted to start masters track and field in Japan and promote as lifetime sport. His life's work continues. With his passion and dedication, the City of Wakayama has hosted the national (and international) masters track and field championships four times.
Wakayama is a fantastic travel destination with great local products, like the very sweet Onshu tangerine and Kishu `umeboshi` (salted plums - recently, Dr. Oz show introduced that umeboshi is the great source of probiotics), plus Wakayama is the seafood lovers' paradise!
- Wakayama castle - The Tokugawa Shogun Family used to reside in this castle
- Kimiidera - A Buddhist temple founded approximately 1,250 years ago. The stadium is located within the temple park.
- Beautiful autumn leaves - October, when the championship will be held, is one of the most beautiful seasons in Wakayama. You will enjoy seeing leaves turn to autumn red and orange colors.

Represent Your Country
Imagine standing on the medals podium and hearing your National Anthem
World Masters Athletics (WMA) is comprised of six regions, Africa, Asia, Europe, NCCWMA, Oceania and South America. Each region has championships (not necessarily contested each year) where athletes of all capabilities compete while representing their country. There is nothing like competing wearing your nation's team uniform. Very special watching athletes receive medals, just like the Olympics, on medal stands while the gold medalist's National Anthem is played. Many Great USATF Opportunities
Association, Regional & National competitions welcome all athletes.
Many are not aware that USATF events are open to everyone, regardless of capabilities. Additionally, these events have tremendous camaraderie among athletes - a great experience. Competitors in USATF National, Regional and Association championships have ranged from the first time competitor trying to throw the hammer for the first time to the multiple World Record holder. Each competitor is welcome with open arms and often gains a friend or two while battling it out in the track or in the field. The best webpage containing consolidated links for these and more is

Athletes who attend the
Sierra Gold Masters Track and Field Festival will experience a uniquely different masters' meet. Beginning with the fact that it is called a "Festival" and because athletes compete in the trees, under the lights creating an overall festive atmosphere. Additionally, athletes will also be able to see themselves on a 9'x16' video screen, solidifying our commitment to making this a unique experience. Our entire community will treat our masters athletes as celebrities and heroes. Beginning with the opening ceremonies, complete with Taiko Drummers, cheerleaders, and a Heroes' 4x100m Relay, honoring: police, firefighters, sheriff, search and rescue, highway patrol, and teachers. Just as these men and women are heroes, so too are the men and women athletes, who compete from ages 30 to 100. Masters athletes serve as shining examples to show everyone, that it is possible to be active at any age. We expect over 1,000 cheering spectators to celebrate masters as heroes. Our age-graded awards of gold plated silver dollars, Timex watches, subscriptions to National Masters News, and world class medals to every 5 year age group contribute to the uniqueness of our meet. Moreover, we are giving prize money of $1,000 for setting a World Record and $500 for achieving an American Record. Please come to Grass Valley, California and allow our community to show their appreciation for the heroes masters athletes truly are.
