Michael's Memo

We celebrate many ways during the holiday season. Families and friends, the Christmas spirit, holiday traditions and favorite foods are but a few of the blessings in which we rejoice. Of course, at the core of our Christmas celebrations is God's gift to us - His son, Jesus the Christ, our Lord. Christmas is a celebration of God's love that never gives up on us.

The season of Advent is a time when we in the church step away from the world that is constantly telling us to buy stuff and eat stuff. We leave that kind of thinking behind and focus on Jesus' journey as prophet and teacher and then on Christmas Eve celebrate his birth. Indeed, Hope is on the Way and arrives in Jesus.

I am glad you are a part of our community of faith and will celebrate the birth of a baby who came among us more than two thousand years ago. This baby grew up to be an adult and changed the whole world. The world has not been the same since Jesus was born. Here at Slash Church, we are challenging ourselves to continue his work by sharing his love and spreading his message of hope everywhere we go.

January 2018
The challenge to continue the work of building the Kingdom Jesus re-imagined continues with a January sermon series taken right out of the theater. We will journey to a Galilee Far, Far Away. The release of the new film: Star Wars: The Last Jedi has reminded me how much I appreciate Star Wars for its theological and biblical themes. Beginning January 21, we will discover how the Holy Spirit is like the force.

I will see you in Sunday morning worship and at the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 4 p.m.

En Agape',

Rev. Michael

The Peace Light is Coming to Slash  Church
11 am worship on Christmas Eve

Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The light is carried in two blast proof miners lamps on an Austrian Airlines jet from Tel Aviv Israel to Vienna Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries. Austrian Airlines then flies the miners lamps containing the Peace Light from Bethlehem to New York City. The lamps in the picture below then make their journey from the airport in New York all over the United States. The Markley family from Slash received the light and are bringing it here to church this Sunday.

If you would like to share the light bring your own lamp or enclosed candle to church on Sunday!

Outreach Opportunities

Christmas Family
This past week several of Santa's elves loaded up sleighs and proceeded off to meet Grandma.  After much anticipation, the sleighs began to be unloaded.  Did I mention it took more than one sleigh to deliver the gifts? There were matchbox and hot wheels cars, chalk and coloring materials, Harry Potter items and more for the little ones. There were shoes and clothing. There were so many gift cards. Oh my!   Eyes were sparkling (some with tears).  Smiles were getting bigger and hugs were numerous.  There were thanks and thanks and more thanks. To all of the elves at Slash who helped to make a memorable Christmas for our Christmas families - I say THANK YOU!  You are elves as well as Angels!

Christmas Offering received December 10 and 17
Did you know that 100% of the Christmas offering that your congregation receives on December 10th and 17th comes back to the Region of Virginia? Perhaps that may sound strange, for the Region to be a recipient of this Special Day offering, but in fact, what better way can we live into our commitment to one another, to live together as the Body of Christ? From Christ's love for us, and our love for one another, we can strengthen all the marvelous ministries that happen around the year in Virginia, by participating prayerfully and generously in this year's Christmas offering.
Thank you for your generous gifts as of December 18th totaling $440.00.

Hanover Christmas Mother Hat Project

We so appreciate your contribution to the project.
Your generosity of both gloves and hats was wonderful. Please keep knitting and crocheting.
We are hoping to do this again next year.

In Christ,
Lebanon United Methodist Women
June Chappell and the "Knit Wits".
