HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of The North Fort Worth
Historical Society
Quannah Parker and other members of the Comanche and Kiowa  tribes were guests of honor at the 1909 Stock Show. This photo was taken in the Cowtown Coliseum.
After Armour and Swift opened their plants in 1903, the cattlemen of Texas began trusting the financial status of the Fort Worth Market. By 1904, Fort Worth was the nation's fifth largest livestock market. It was the largest market south of Kansas City and the largest in the entire Southwest during that half-century.
The packing plants brought jobs to the north side which brought residents to the area. Newcomers from all over the nation and even the world came to Fort Worth and found employment in the Stockyards and usually settled nearby. Those who were employed by the Stockyards, Swift and Armour increased the population from 500 to 5,000. Not only did the plants offer good jobs with benefits but they had perks such as baseball teams, company picnics, choirs, beauty pageants, and bands. Because most of the workers lived near the plants a real sense of community developed in the North Side.
As the population grew so did commerce. More retail establishments were built as well as entertainment venues and churches. One of the most significant additions to the stockyards was the North Side Coliseum in 1908.
Now known as Cowtown Coliseum, it was originally built to house the Stock Show. It was constructed in 88 days and was billed as "the most opulent and dynamic livestock pavilion in the entire Western Hemisphere."  Since then it has hosted many special guests, such as Elvis, Quanah Parker, Enrico Caruso and Theodore Roosevelt to name just a few. Cowtown Coliseum's international acclaim is for being the location of the "World's First Indoor Rodeo" in 1918.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,

Fort Worth Stockyards
