Employee of the Year nominations
 
Hopkins County Schools is seeking nominations for the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year and Employee of the Year awards.
 
Teacher of the Year nominees must have a minimum of three years teaching experience. The Teachers of the Year will be selected in the categories of Elementary (P-5), Middle (6-8) and Secondary (9-12).
 
Categories for Employee of the Year nominations are: Administrator of the Year, eligible nominees would include principals, assistant principals, central office administrators, and guidance counselors; Classified Support Services, eligible nominees would include instructional assistants who work in a classroom setting to enhance student achievement and Family Resource employees who provide student needs throughout the district; Facilities Management, eligible employees would include all custodians and district maintenance staff; Food Service, eligible nominees would include all cafeteria employees, cafeteria managers and district food service employees; Transportation, eligible nominees would include bus drivers, bus monitors, vehicle maintenance staff and district employees; Secretary of the Year, eligible employees would include all school and district secretaries; and Central Office Employee of the Year, eligible employees would include all central office staff.
 
Nominations will be accepted through the close of business, 4 p.m.Friday, June 9, 2017. Nomination forms may be mailed to Employee of the Year, Hopkins County Schools, 320 S. Seminary Street, Madisonville, KY 42431. Attention: Crystal Carlton.

Distracted Driving Campaign
A mock distracted driving accident was held at Hopkins County Career & Technology Center April 14. HOSA students participated in the campaign in conjunction with the PHI air medical team.
 
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The event was coordinated by Holly Shoulders of PHI.
 
The campaign started with a poster awareness campaign.
Students watched the mock car crash with Bryce Ramsey from Madisonville North Hopkins and Nicole Adams from Hopkins County Central playing the victims. They were moulaged and responders from Madisonville Fire Department, PHI air medical transport team, Baptist Health Medical Ambulance Center, and Hopkins County Coroner's office reported to the site.
 
Madisonville Fire Department narrated the event for students of the CTC as the event proceeded. Afterward, Scott Weiss from Kentucky State Police and a woman who had a life-altering texting and driving accident gave presentations in the conference room. All students received string tote bags and ear buds from PHI air medical.




Gamblin receives
Teacher Achievement Award

Wendy Gamblin, a teacher at West Broadway Elementary School, is among 24 outstanding Kentucky educators selected as recipients of the 2018 Valvoline Teacher Achievement Awards. These teachers qualify to compete for the 2018 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced in May.
 
This is Gamblin's 6th year teaching. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education and her master's degree in teacher leadership from Murray State University. She will be entering the administration cohort at MSU in the fall.
 
"Mrs. Wendy Gamblin truly has a passion for teaching and it is evident in her daily instruction, which focuses on individual student needs to ensure success," said WBES Principal Amy Smith. "Our Bobcat family is so proud of her!"

JMMS student reaches
Doodle 4 Google National Finals
James Madison Middle School student Connley Sewalls is a National Finalist in the Doodle 4 Google contest!
 
Her artwork, "The Future is Love," is among the Top 5 entries out of more than 130,000 submissions nationwide. Connley accepted the award this morning at Google headquarters in California, where the national winner was also announced. Prizes for the four National Finalists include a $5,000 college scholarship, the all-expenses-paid trip to Google Headquarters, and a Chromebook. Her artwork is also being displayed at Google headquarters.

Academy Appointments
Hunter Scott and Hans Niestrath, Madisonville North Hopkins JROTC students, led the Pledge of Allegiance during Monday's Board of Education meeting. Hans has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and Hunter has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Both have been awarded full scholarships to these prestigious schools. The value of each scholarship is estimated at more than $300,000. Upon graduation, Hunter will serve as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and Hans will serve as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.
 
Autism Awareness

April is Autism Awareness month and Browning Springs is spreading awareness and understanding of autism to Hopkins County. The school wants to celebrate and honor the unique talents and skills of people with autism.The outside of the school will be blue for the entire month of April. All staff kicked off the event by wearing blue on March 31.
 
Every year on World Autism Awareness Day (April 2), Autism Speaks celebrates its international Light It Up Blue" campaign. Thousands of iconic landmarks, skyscrapers, schools, businesses and homes across the globe unite by shining bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families affected by autism. Individuals everywhere wear blue in honor of people with autism.
 
Board honors HCCHS dance team

 
The Board of Education honored Hopkins County Central High School High Voltage Dance Team during the April 17 meeting for winning the NDA National Championship in Medium Varsity Hip Hop. The team also won the Innovative Choreography and Technical Excellence awards in its division at nationals.
 
The team is KDCO Large Varsity Hip Hop State Champions; KDCO Region 1 & 2 Grand Champions; and KDCO Region 2 Large Hip Hop Champions and Large Pom Champions. The coach is Vickie Fox and assistant coach is Ashley Mitchell.

 
Successful United Way campaign
Hopkins County Schools received the bronze award in this year's United Way campaign.
 
Roneshia Evans received recognition for being the education division chair.
 
For the first time ever, United Way presented the community award to the group that had 100% participation and commitment. This award went to Hopkins County Schools! Every school in our district participated. Evans thanked the school sponsors for their hard work and commitment to the United Way campaign.
 
Individual schools received the following recognitions:
  • Pride Elementary and Madisonville North Hopkins - Silver Award ($30 per capita)
  • West Hopkins and Jesse Stuart - Bronze Award ($10 per capita).
"Hopkins County Schools was 9th overall in the list of the top 25 employee campaigns and this speaks to the immense support and generosity of #TeamHopkins staff," Evans said.
 
Munns School sign dedicated
A Kentucky historical marker was unveiled at Munns Schoolhouse during a dedication ceremony on March 31. The school dates back to 1864 when an acre of land was first deeded to Hopkins County School Trustees. The current structure was built in 1879 as a one-room school, with the second classroom added in the 1920s. Pennyroyal Herb Club and the Historical Society of Hopkins County led the project. The building is owned by the school district.
 
HCEA Tree Planting
Hopkins County Education Association planted trees at three schools in honor of Earth Day. This is a "visibility project" for HCEA. Red bud trees were planted at James Madison Middle, Grapevine Elementary and Hopkins County Central High School.
 
SHMS creates Van Gogh Hallway

A South Hopkins Middle School hallway has a new look, thanks to a painting project completed by art teacher David Gilkey's sync students. They worked together to create a "Van Gogh Hallway" at the school.

Mackey named HR director
Dr. Karen Mackey has been named director of human resources for Hopkins County Schools.
 
She most recently has served as district director of technology. She previously was principal of Earlington Elementary School for six years. She has been an adjunct faculty member for Murray State University since 2013.
 
She is completing her 27th year working in education.
 
Mackey earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education, a master's degree and Rank 1 in school counseling, certification in instructional leadership - principal (Level 1 and Level 2), and a doctorate in educational leadership, all from WKU.
Summer Food Service
The Hopkins County Schools will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program.  If your school or church would like to be a site, contact the food service department for more information.
Region Welding Championship
Hopkins County Central High School's FFA won the Region Championship in Welding. Team members are, from left, Jeremy Maddox, Dallyn Hopper, Michael Logan, Skyler Hibbs and Austin James. The Arc Welding team scored a total of 281 points. Austin James received the top individual score, with 100. HCCHS was also the top team in MIG Welding, with student Michael Logan scoring 98. This is the 12th year out of the school's 20-year history that HCCHS has won the Region Welding Team Championship.
 
Mac & Cheese March helps food bank
Jesse Stuart Elementary School recently completed the "Mac and Cheese March" or "March-a-Roni and Cheese" food drive for Hopkins County Christian Food Bank. Students were asked to donate boxes of macaroni and cheese during March.  They donated 1,382 boxes to the food bank on March 31.  Mrs. Jarvis' first grade class donated the most boxes, with 309 boxes given by their class Mrs. Zimmer's fourth grade class came in second in the school with 205 boxes. 





BSMS students receive new pair of shoes
Every Browning Springs Middle School student received a new pair of shoes April 14, thanks to Madisonville First Assembly of God. Church members collaborated with the BSMS Youth Services Center to individually measure each student in the school for the new shoes. First Assembly of God previously provided shoes to South Hopkins Middle and Southside Elementary students. They plan to continue the program at additional schools.
 
National School Lunch Hero Day
Friday, May 5, is National School Lunch Hero Day. Please take the time to let your cafeteria staff know they are appreciated!
Hawaiian Day at Central Office
Central Office employees went tropical Friday, April 21, for Hawaiian Day. The day also featured a Hawaiian potluck lunch.
Retirement Paperwork
If you plan to retire at the end of this year, you are encouraged to complete your paperwork ahead of time. This is a busy time for both KRS and KTRS retirement systems, and the sooner the paperwork is submitted the better. Please contact Payroll at Central Office to schedule a time for them to complete the employer portion of the retirement paperwork.
