MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, GARY FRUITS

If you and your family are looking for an exciting evening, the Lee's Summit Symphony Orchestra Family Pops Concert is the place to be! This is an evening for families to get together and share a wonder music experience that will be both affordable and fun!

There is something for everyone! Art work displays, face painting, a musical instrument petting zoo for the kiddos to try their hand at any instrument and conducting. We will have team mascots from the local high schools and someone you all know and love, KC Wolf! You will be royally entertained by Russell E. Berlin, Jr. and our wonderful Lee's Summit Symphony Orchestra Musicians, the LS 6^th Grade Honor Choir and Ben Martin will be our guest narrator for Peter and the Wolf.

We would also ask that you consider donating to the Symphony in the form of your time, talent or resources. Our Symphony is simply not possible without funding from donations, sponsorships, grants and hundreds of volunteer hours. The Symphony adds immensely to the quality of life in Lee's Summit and Eastern Jackson County.

Summer will soon be here! The Lee's Summit Symphony Orchestra will be performing at several events during the summer months and invites you to join them.

Sunday, June 4 @ 12:30 p.m. Downtown Days

Saturday, July 1 @ 6:00 p.m. Powell Gardens

Thursday, August 3 @ 6:00 p.m. John Knox Pavilion

All three of our summer performances will feature music that is sure to entertain you. At Downtown Days we will be performing on the main stage with selections you might recognize. Our Powell Gardens performance is a beloved tradition that salutes our country and those that have served in our armed forces. The evening performance ends with a spectacular fireworks display. The concert in August is a collaborative effort with John Knox Village to begin our 15^th anniversary season. The Crystal Celebration will feature some of our favorite selections from years past. The evening will end with a complimentary champagne reception sponsored by Steve and Linda Smith, Richard and Lisa Simpson and Cathy Montgomery. Looking for Friends? We've got lots of them and they are busy volunteering at concerts, providing financial support for our musicians, and enjoying a variety of social events. Fun with Friends has several upcoming events:

May 6 : Attend, or become a volunteer, at the Family Pops Concert at LS High School. Tickets can be purchased at either Hy-Vee store. If you wish to help, phone the symphony office at 816.401.5251 to be directed to our volunteer coordinator. WE NEED YOU!

July 1: Join us at Powell Gardens for the annual "Booms and Blooms" concert featuring the symphony and a magnificent fireworks display. Look for our banner and sit with our group to enjoy a picnic supper and the beauty of the gardens.

Additional activities are scheduled for the summer and fall. Membership entitles you to invitations to them all, Friends galore, and a chance to support our symphony for years to come.

From the Maestro

Many fun surprises await both adults and young people for our Family Frivolity: A Walk on the Wild Side. There will be the favorite petting zoo for young budding musicians, art displays, KC Wolf, and many other features. The Lee's Summit Symphony musicians will be presenting What's Up At The Symphony? Featuring Bugs Bunny's Greatest Hits; Teddy Bear's Picnic, Dances With Wolves, and the classic, Peter and the Wolf narrated by Mr. Ben Martin. Ben was a long-time master teacher of drama at LSHS and LSWHS. He also founded the Lee's Summit Community Theater. The Lee's Summit R-7 6^th Grade Honor Choir will also be our guest and present two selections. It will, definitely, be an enjoyable family outing with our local symphony. Hope to see everyone there!

Meet our Featured Board Member

Dr. Douglas "Doug" G. Hatridge

We are very pleased to introduce Dr. Doug Hatridge, President Elect of the Lee's Summit Symphony Board of Directors.

Doug is from Kirkwood, Missouri and graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1966. He went on to become a "Tri Tiger" receiving his Bachelor of Science in Education, Master of Education and Doctorate in Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia. During his time at the University of Missouri, Doug was active in the Student Senate, MNEA/MSTA Vice President, College of Education Student Council and Beta Theta Pi Social Fraternity.

Doug's first job out of college was teaching and coaching job with the Centralia, Missouri School District. He moved on to the Columbia School District serving in various capacities including teacher, coach, counselor and assistant principal. Doug's next stop was at the Lee's Summit R-7 School District serving as an assistant principal at Lee's Summit High School. He moved to the Moberly, "the Magic City" Missouri school district serving as the principal of the high school. Next, he moved to Fort Osage where he served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. Since 2003, Doug has been affiliated with the University of Central Missouri and has served in a number of capacities including Assistant Director for Alternative Certification.

Doug is a published author of numerous articles pertaining to education in the state of Missouri. He is a member of several professional educational organizations at both the state and national levels. He is, also, very active with the Department of Missouri Elementary and Secondary Education. He continues to be active with the University of Missouri College of Education.

In addition to all of his activities with the Symphony, Doug is active with the Lee's Summit Breakfast Optimist Club, serving as Vice President. He and his wife, Helen, are active members of the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church.

Doug and Helen have a son, Roger, who is married to Kyoung Hee. They also have a daughter, Martha Ann "Marti" Hatridge. Henry and Walter are their two grandsons.

Doug still manages to play seniors softball in his spare time and has been known to play the tuba from time to time. He is one busy gentleman!

We thank Doug for his countless hours of volunteerism for the Lee's Summit Symphony and congratulate him on being the next President of the Lee's Summit Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors.

Featured Musician: Charles Jones

We are very pleased to feature a member of our trumpet section for this edition of STANZA, Charles Jones.

Charles was born in St. Louis Missouri but lived in Tucson, Arizona for the majority of his childhood. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1979 with a Bachelor's degree in Instrumental Education with a K-12 teaching certificate. He met his wife, Valerie at the University of Arizona. She is a Nurse Practitioner with Family Health Specialists in Lees Summit. They have two sons, Matthew and Brandon who attended LSN and Graduated from MU.

Charles started performing on the trumpet in Arizona in 1975. He was member of the Tucson Opera Pit Orchestra, Southwest Arizona Traveling Symphony and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. He was also on call for a Big Band Dance Band in Phoenix Arizona and occasionally performed in the Phoenix Opera Company Pit Orchestra.

In 1980, Charles moved to Missouri, married his true love and best friend, Valerie, and began teaching Instrumental music in Lees Summit. He taught at Lees Summit Elementary, Hazel Grove Elementary, Pleasant Lea Elementary and Pleasant Lea Junior High Schools and assisted Jim Oliver at the Lees Summit High School. He taught alongside our Maestro Russell Berlin for a year. Some of you may know one of his former students, now a Professor of Music at NW Missouri State University, Bill Richardson.

Performing at the Kauffman Center Music Hall was a highlight for Charles. Charles is very grateful for the opportunity the Symphony has provided and we are fortunate to have Charles as a member of the Symphony!
