Dear Neighbor-

On May 9th, there will be a community meeting to discuss near-term improvements for people walking, biking, riding transit, and driving at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue, North Avenue, and Damen Avenue.  Details are listed below.

Last night, WTTW Chicago aired "My Neighborhood-Pilsen" about Chicago's Pilsen community.
The live panels included members from all parts of the community discussing arts, health, immigration, jobs, public safety, gentrification and housing issues.
"My Neighborhood-Pilsen" is worth watching no matter which Chicago community we live in.

Tomorrow is Independent Book Store Day in Chicago.  Support your favorite local independent stores hosting events throughout Chicago, including ones like Quimby's or Roscoe Books

Have a nice weekend,
Scott Waguespack

Talman/Altgeld Water Main Project #1701018
Project:  The Department of Water Management will soon be installing 1,485 feet of 8-inch water main in N. Talman Ave from W. Fullerton Ave to W. Logan Blvd, and in W. Altgeld St. from N. Talman Ave to N. Washtenaw Ave.

Reason:  The old main consists of 6-inch pipe, and they want to expand capacity. Further, the old pipe dates back to 1880 and needs to be replaced.

Timing:  They will begin installing the new water main in early May, and expect the work to be completed in late June. Restoration will follow. Dates may change depending on weather and other factors. If there is any appreciable change, they will notify you.

Traffic:  They will allow traffic to flow outside of their working hours.  When they are working in the street, they have to close it to traffic for reasons of safety. You will always be able to reach your home or business, even if it means putting a metal plate in place. Outside of working hours, a lane will be left open for local traffic only.

Parking: They will post their work area for "No Parking" as needed, during work hours (7am-4pm). They are agreeable to parking outside of those hours, but will have to insist that cars be moved by the start of the next workday. They will try to preserve as much parking as they can.

Alerts: If you would like to receive regular email updates about the progress of the project, please go to BuildingANewChicago.org to register for the WaterALERT program. Simply enter your name, email address, and the project identification number at the top of this section.  By signing up for the WaterALERT emails, you will be notified as the project enters each new construction phase - from mobilization of equipment onto the site, to the installation of new pipes, to the final restoration of the street.

Office of Inspector General  - Audit on City Infrastructure and Road Menu Funds
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) conducted an audit of the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) Aldermanic Menu Program (Menu), a sub-program of the Neighborhood Infrastructure Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which is the City's primary means of residential infrastructure management. The objectives of this audit were to determine whether the City adequately addresses residential infrastructure needs for all wards through effective planning and funding and whether CDOT effectively manages Menu projects through a uniform process. In light of these findings, OIG recommends that CDOT assume direct responsibility for residential infrastructure planning by implementing a comprehensive, long-term strategic capital plan aligned with industry best practices. Centralizing planning in CDOT would allow the City to coordinate citywide allocation of resources to address residential infrastructure needs.

Senior Life Enrichment Guide - Spring Issue Now Available!
The spring issue of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Service's (DFSS) Senior Life Enrichment Guide is now available at DFSS's regional and satellite senior centers, libraries, and online.

The guide highlights programs and activities offered by the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services for Chicagoans ages "60 Years and Better" during the spring.  Inside, seniors will find information about health and wellness, educational and recreational events, trips, classes, and lectures, along with schedules and registration details. Most of these are free or at a nominal cost.

Each year in May, seniors are invited to one of the DFSS regional and satellite senior centers as they celebrate Older Americans Month to mark the 52nd anniversary of the federal Older Americans Act, which continues to positively impact the lives of millions of older citizens. This year's theme, "Age Out Loud," emphasizes the ways older adults are living their lives with boldness, confidence, and passion while serving as an inspiration to people of all ages.

The contents of the Spring 2017 guide are also posted online at www.cityofchicago.org/fss. Further information about DFSS services and programs is available by calling the Aging and Disability Resource Network (ADRN) at (312) 744-4016.
