Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Graduation Ceremony Will Be Friday, June 16
An Important Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

To: Graduating Seniors
From: Brian M Stack, Principal

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 16, 2017. Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive six (6) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 6 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 15 and 16. Please also remember that all students must have their $50 class dues ($20 senior dues) paid in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies.

Senior Spotlight : Sarah Richard
An Article By Guidance Counselor Laura Pouliot

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Can I picture Sarah Richard becoming the next Jane Goodall?  Absolutely!  She would likely be studying some type of big cat or elephant instead of chimpanzees, but she possesses the right mixture of intelligence, persistence and passion to make such a dream come true.  Sarah chooses "kind, hardworking and thoughtful" as adjectives to best describe herself and I believe those have been life-long traits for her.  Throughout high school, I have witnessed Sarah mature in her leadership ability, her capacity to manage myriad demands and in her compassion towards others (humans and animals alike).  Sarah's ambition is exotic in its subject as well as its scope.  Sarah is a true student of the world, equally eager to learn about its two- and four-legged inhabitants.  Sarah's academic aptitude is apparent, but it is her desire to understand a variety of points of view and espouse those that fit her best that make her insightful, adaptive and savvy as a student and person.

Sarah has acquired points of wisdom throughout her high school years that have contributed to her impressive leadership ability.  As part of student government, Sarah understands the basics of remaining organized and one step ahead of upcoming class demands.  She additionally reflects on how leaders occasionally need to put their own beliefs and desires aside for the benefit of the greater good.  Overall, Sarah Richard is an extremely sweet young lady with a positively contagious smile.  She is enthusiastic, dedicated and very sharp while remaining friendly, approachable and down-to-Earth.  She is civic-minded, school-spirited and positively itching to find herself in some unusual locale doing gritty, grueling field work with exotic animals. Sarah's desire to be a wildlife zoologist is not fleeting; she understands the field is narrow and the pay likely low yet remains stalwart in her ambition.   She truly espouses an understanding of work responsibility and is genuinely curious about diverse points of view.  Sarah Richard is well-prepared and suited for a rigorous academic and uniquely adventurous future.

Senior Spotlight : McKenzie Wentworth
An Article By Guidance Counselor Laura Pouliot

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Even though McKenzie Wentworth considers herself to be an average, 'run-of-the-mill' kid, I know that she is a spitfire, who is intellectually curious, passionate about science and hard-working both in school and out.  She is far beyond average personally and academically, and refuses to allow anything to stand in the way as she resolutely pursues a career in Nursing.  McKenzie's earliest vocational aspiration was to become a veterinarian, but after years of listening to her grandmother's captivating stories about being an ER nurse, her goal of helping to save lives switched from working with animals to people.  She vividly remembers being at an 8th grade cheerleading practice when a teammate dislocated a finger and adults were not nearby.  McKenzie calmly took complete control of the situation, soothing the student and delegating to others the jobs of finding assistance and calling the student's parent.   Anything science comes easily to McKenzie, whether it be astronomy or physiology.  She devours books, professional journals and television shows related to topics of interest and is a very active class participant and debater.

Over her high school career, I have witnessed McKenzie evolve into an incredibly serious student.  Unlike some students, McKenzie respects teachers and coaches who recognize her full potential and push her hard to reach it, crediting them with galvanizing her to work to her full ability.  McKenzie's little sister calls her 'courageous', as McKenzie bravely speaks her mind and does not back down in the face of a challenge.  I call McKenzie exuberant and bubbly, with a great sense of humor and the ability to take disappointment in stride.  McKenzie demonstrates superior interpersonal skills and has developed a respectable work ethic through school and her job.  Tough and gritty while also funny, sharp and endearing, this self-motivated young lady refuses to be held back from reaching her goals and is bound to set the world on fire while getting there!

SRHS Announces April Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Jules Ryan and Amanda Fuller

Sanborn Regional High School is proud to honor two professionals as the April Staff Members of the Month. These people both go above and beyond the call of duty to make Sanborn such a special place for students.

Jules Ryan

Ms. Ryan is an English teacher in the Freshman Learning Community. Her colleague, Ashley Millerd, describes her as an amazing educator.  "She comes in ready to give her all to our students....She is creative, compassionate, and passionate about teaching and English.  She inspires many of our students, especially the young woman on the Freshman Learning Community, using programs such as Girl Talk enrichment to empower students and to support them." Additionally, colleague Brittany Lombardo appreciates that Jules is "a fantastic member of the Freshman Learning Community and she has been key in helping me adjust to Sanborn!  Her innovative ideas inspire me to look for new ways to engage my students." This year, Ms. Ryan has also assumed responsibilities as a school lead on the PACE project and she has provided strong leadership to the group.

Amanda Fuller

Ms. Fuller has been a fantastic addition to our counseling staff.  As the Student Assistance Counselor, she sees a wide variety of students --- from those who are dealing with substance abuse issues at home or with themselves, to students who are experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis.  She has also been super engaged in the broader school community, lending her expertise as an advisor to the Life of a Student organization and providing professional development and coaching to staff. Ms. Rooney would like people to know that "Amanda is a tremendous resource for our students who are in crisis or who need reassurance on a daily basis.  She goes above and beyond and I don't think people realize what a positive impact she has on our students.  She works tremendously hard to help our students and is available 24/7 to offer assistance if needed."

Thank you, Ms. Ryan and Ms. Fuller, for being inspirations and role models to all of us at Sanborn!
NH Art Institute Proessor Maureen Mills Visits Sanborn
A Message From Art Teacher & Team Leader Karen Ladd

Ceramics classes at SRHS had a unique opportunity on Thursday, March 30th to watch demonstrations given by NH Art Institute professor and professional artist, Maureen Mills , and her assistant, a senior at NHIA, Joshua Q. Fletcher.  Students in periods 2 and 8 were able to watch the making of several slab forms with a variety of surface decoration, one of Mills' many specialties.  Fletcher made forms alongside Mills, showing variety in construction and outcome.  During Focused Learning Time, any student had the ability to attend a workshop where Mills and Fletcher showed students how to make clay rattles.  Students in periods 3 and 5 were able to watch Mills make a variety of forms on the wheel - from bowls and cylinders to a completely closed sphere.  Fletcher then altered the forms with darts, slip designs, etching, and other surface techniques.  Students reported being inspired by Mills and Fletcher and have since attempted (with great success!) some of the techniques.  We are so fortunate to have experienced this event free of charge - thanks to a new initiative Mills is conducting, where she visits high school ceramics programs across the state.  Mills was excited to come to Sanborn, as she had heard great things about our art department and was impressed when she saw the work of our students and the facilities.  The art department greatly thanks Maureen Mills and Joshua Q. Fletcher for their time and knowledge!

SCREENAGERS Comes to Timberlane
A Message From The Timberlane Parent Advisory Forum

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO SANBORN FAMILIES:

Timberlane Parent Advisory Forum will be hosting two FREE showings of the award-winning documentary SCREENAGERS; neighboring community members are invited and encouraged to attend! This screening is available to parents, students (recommended for students in grade 5 and up), and community members. The event will be held in the auditorium at the Timberlane Performing Arts Center, 40 Greenough Rd, Plaistow, NH on
April 17, 2017 at 5pm  and 7p m.

Filmmaker, parent, and physician Delaney Ruston reports the average child spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. This caused her to think about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her other award-winning documentaries on mental health, Dr. Ruston probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts children and teens' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. For more information please visit http://www.screenagersmovie.com/

An informal question and answer session will immediately follow the documentary.

Looking For Student Speakers For Graduation Events!
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Sanborn Regional High School is looking for students to deliver speeches for three graduation-related events: Scholarship Night, Class Day, and Graduation.

Who is eligible to apply?

All students in the Class of 2017 are encouraged to apply to be a student speaker at one of these events provided the student meets the three qualifications below.

  1. The student must be in good academic standing and on track to graduate with their class (no failing course grades or IWS grades) throughout the senior year.
  2. As a role model, the student may not have any major discipline infractions during their senior year (anything Level IV or above according to the student handbook is considered a major infraction) throughout the senior year.
  3. Have no more than 6 unexcused* absences to school throughout the senior year. *All absences are considered unexcused unless the school has documentation for a medical issue.

What kind of speech is appropriate to submit?

Students are encouraged to submit a speech for consideration at a graduation-related event. When deciding what topic or topics to focus the speech on, students should consider the following question: What key message or messages would I want given to me as a graduate at this ceremony? Although there is no official minimum or maximum length, an ideal speech would be between 500-750 words and would take approximately 5-7 minutes to deliver.

When is the speech due?

Students should send an electronic copy of their speech to Mr. Stack at his email address: [email protected] NO LATER THAN Friday May 5, 2017

What process will be used to select the winning speeches?

After May 5, Mr. Stack will turn over all the speeches to a jury of faculty members who will review them. This committee will select the speeches that have the most appropriate theme or message as semi-finalists. This review will be done blindly (no student names will be attached to the speeches). As part of this review, semi-finalist students may be asked to deliver a live version of their speech to the committee. The committee will identify the strongest public speakers and these students will be named finalists and offered the opportunity to deliver their speech at Scholarship Night, Class Day, or Graduation.
