Sermon: Advent through Our Eyes

Robert Alexander will preach at 11 in the sanctuary.

How do we prepare for the coming of Christ? As we stand puzzling about this we might find ourselves like the Grinch who stood with his feet in the cold snow and puzzled over the meaning of Christmas.  Is the coming of Christ "wrapped up" in paper and tinsel and holiday lights and Christmas cookies?  Of course not!  We know the answer is an emphatic "No!" These cultural expressions of the season do not make Christmas what it is.  So what does?
Mary was given a promise by the Angel Gabriel.  "You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus."  She received the message with a bit of fear, and wonder, and thoughtfulness, and...faith.  She said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord."  And then she waited and prepared to receive and carry this gift.
Our eyes may also be filled with fear, and wonder, and faith.  They may also be filled with doubt and anxiety and dread.  How do we prepare?  Have we done enough?  Will the Lord really return? And when he does what will he think of me?

The Chancel and Youth choirs will sing Thou Child Divine .

This Sunday we will collect funds for the Christmas Joy Offering.  This offering, a Presbyterian tradition since 1930, is divided evenly between the Assistance Program of the PC(USA) Board of Pensions and Presbyterian-related racial-ethnic schools and colleges.  You may give to DCPC with "Christmas Joy" in the memo line or text "JOY" to 20222 to give $10. Thank you for your support.
