TAZRIA-METZORA

MORAH MIRIAM BEN GAL

Many times in life, we suffer from feelings of insignificance, that we are stuck in our normal routine, and nothing we do can or does make a difference in the world. Laws about purity and impurity point to those moments in our lives when things are abnormal, uncomfortable or distasteful, and command us to notice these moments, and to use them as an opportunity to stop and examine our lives.

An example of this is found in the case of the z av or z ava, someone who has had an abnormal discharge and is commanded to separate from those around him/her, count seven clean days, wash, bring a sin offering and return to normal life. There are several things about this case that are unique, yet perhaps the most striking is this matter of counting seven clean days. The verse says - וספר לו, that the z av counts for himself, and then again - וספרה לה, that the zava counts for herself.

It is interesting that this commandment to count, to mark time, is only found in 2 other places in the Torah, once regarding the counting of the Omer, which we are currently doing, and once regarding the counting of the yovel year.

What do we learn from these four cases of "You shall count for yourselves"? First, we learn that the Torah commands us at times to count days, at times to count weeks, and at times to count years. As well, in each case we are told that these countings are somehow uniquely for us, they are personal in some way. The Torah is teaching us that each and every single day matters, days form weeks, and weeks form years. Each day is an opportunity, a potential to grow and better ourselves, w hether we count days, weeks, or years.

Every day counts, if I make it count. And this counting affords me a structure, a kind of protection from being stuck, from being unable to access the beauty around me. It protects me from that feeling that nothing I do matters. We move forward, we push on, and we make each and every day count. In the end, we look back at all we managed to accomplish by taking small, methodical, constructive steps, and we see that we have indeed built ourselves beautiful coats of positivity and growth.

chaburaCHABURA PROGRAM OPENS
Last Friday marked the opening day of Kohelet's brand new Chabura program.  In the Chabura program each of our students chooses a Torah topic he or she finds interesting, and joins a small group of like-minded students to learn about that topic in-depth over the course of a few weeks. Lay leaders and professionals from across the Jewish community, including rabbis, alumni, medical students, and parents of alumni,  came to teach our students the topic of their choice .  The variety of topics offered included  halacha,   surrounding drones and technology,  pathways to wisdom, Jewish medical ethics, dating and relationships, and
magic & the  urim v'tumim .  The building was bustling with energy as we broke from our conventional classrooms and teachers to try something new and exciting.
