St. Sarkis Name Day & Ordination of Acolytes and Sub-deacons

On Sunday, Feb 5, St Sarkis held it's annual St Sarkis Name Day Celebration.  The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence, Archbishop Oshagan.  As part of the celebration, the badarak included the ordination of as acolytes of alter servers Hovsep Terterian, Vahan  Gostanian , Gary Nercessian, Aram Nenejian, Levon Nenejian, and Alex Demirdjan.  His Eminence also ordained acolytes Razmik Nenejian, Raffi Nenejian, Haig Baghdassarian, Areg Pogosyan and Shont Voskerijian as sub-deacons.

Following the badarak, 140 partitioners gathered for a reception in the church's Chadrjian Hall.  Archbishop Oshagan joined the parishioners, along with His Grace, Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian.  Master of Ceremonies, Deacon  Michael   Gostanian  opened the afternoon's program, commenting on how while the church has been through many struggles, we have also had many triumphs that we can look back on.  Those triumphs, he stated, were only possible with the help of those who serve the church.  Deacon  Michael  then introduced students from the St Sarkis Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Armenian School, to present a musical program.  Each of the newly ordained sub-deacons then addressed the attendees, with a few remarks on what their new ordination meant to them.

Deacon Dikran Kabarajian then came to the podium to say a few words about his father.  While the newly ordained alter servers were taking the first steps in their journey of service, Deacon Frank was commemorating 50 years of service to the Armenian church, as well as his 80th birthday!  Deacon Frank the remarked on his time at St Sarkis, dating back to original St Sarkis which was lost so many years ago in a tragic fire. He thanked the many people that he worked with over the years in support of the church. Deacon Frank, like others who spoke, also noted how nice it was to see so many people serving as their parents did before them.

The afternoon was capped off with words from Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Aram Cazazian, Der Nareg, and Oshagan Srpazan.  Serpazan Hayr presented certificates to all the newly ordained alter servers, as well as a special certificate to Deacon Frank, recognizing his many years of dedication.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TIMOTHY (3:1-12)
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth-men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (6.22-38)
The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?  Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.  Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

Liturgical Calendar
THE PROPHET JONAH
Monday, February 13, the Armenian Church will remember the Prophet Jonah (Hovnan), one of the twelve Minor Prophets. The Minor Prophets are not considered less important that those called Major Prophets, but their books in the Bible are shorter. All of the Minor Prophets were servants of God who proclaimed His will to people in need of repentance.
The story of Jonah and the whale is one of the better-known stories in the Old Testament. Jonah's feast falls on the last day of the Fast of the Catechumens. Just as the people of Nineveh fasted and repented from their wicked ways, so too do the people of God during this preliminary fast before Great Lent (Medz Bahk), the most penitential season of the year.

PRESENTATION OF CHRIST TO THE TEMPLE (DYARNUNTARACH)
On Tuesday,February 14, the Armenian Church commemorates the Presentation of Jesus to the Temple (Dyarnuntarch in Armenian, which literally means "going forward to the Lord"). This feast always falls on February 14-forty days after the Nativity (January 6). Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary obeyed Mosaic Law and presented her son to the temple (Numbers 18:15). In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it was revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (See Luke 2:22-40).
Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States as well. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire and as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ, who is the Everlasting Light of the world.

ST. SARKIS THE WARRIOR
On Wednesday, February 15, the Armenian Church commemorates the life of St. Sarkis the Warrior, his son Mardiros, and 14 faithful soldiers. This is a moveable feast that can occur between January 11 and February 15. It follows the Fast of the Catechumens. Although the fast is not connected to the feast of St. Sarkis, it has come to be associated with this saint, even often incorrectly referred to as the "fast of St. Sarkis."
Sarkis lived during the fourth century in Cappadocia. He rose through the military ranks because of his valiant campaign on behalf of the Emperor Constantine. With the accession of Emperor Julian, Sarkis took refuge in Armenia with his son. Later they joined the Persian army to fight Julian. Father and son fought with exceptional bravery. The Persian leader, Shapur II, tried to convince them to abandon their Christian faith and embrace Zoroastrianism. Both refused, and they were martyred. Fourteen loyal Christian soldiers who went to claim the bodies were also martyred. Eventually, other Christians successfully retrieved the remains and sent them to Assyria, where they remained until the fifth century when Mesrob Mashdots had the remains transferred to the city of Karpi in Vaspurakan, Armenia. A monastery was built over the site of the graves.
