2018-19 School Calendar Approved
The Denver Board of Education tonight adopted the 2018-19 School Calendar proposed by the Calendar Advisory Committee. Key items include:
- School starts Aug. 20, ends May 31.
- Full weeks off at Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break.
- Spring Teal Days align with interim assessments, Student Learning Objective (SLO) conversations.
- Renamed "Parent-Teacher Conferences" to "Family Conferences"; Provided flexibility at the school level to decide the need for and schedule of a Spring Family Conference day.

Boundary and Zone Changes in Far Northeast, Five Points
In order to ensure equitable access to great schools for all our students, and to address enrollment changes, the board tonight approved boundary and zone changes in Far Northeast Denver and Greater Five Points to take effect in the 2018-19 school year.
In Far Northeast Denver, the district will create two new enrollment zones to serve the Gateway and Green Valley Ranch North areas. These zones will help address capacity challenges at Lena Archuletta Elementary School caused largely by more than 5,000 new housing units in planning and development in the area.
In Greater Five Points, the district will create a single enrollment zone to include Wyatt, Cole, Whittier and University Prep: Arapahoe elementary schools
. In an area of town where gentrification and housing changes have resulted in a steep decline in the number of school-aged children,
there
are currently more than 800 elementary school seats available in the area, even after
last
year's closure of Gilpin Elementary School. Because of transportation complexities and resulting from construction in the area, Downtown Denver Expeditionary School will not be included in this zone for the 2018-19 school year but could be added in future years.

Denver Language School Placed at Gilpin
The board tonight placed grades 4-8 of the Denver Language School (DLS) at the Gilpin facility in Curtis Park, following the recommendations of Superintendent Tom Boasberg and the Gilpin Facility Placement Committee. The fourth grade is included in the placement only for one year, while a portion of DLS'
main facility is under construction.

Superintendent's Report: Early Literacy and SPF
In his monthly public board report, Superintendent Tom Boasberg shared details about how the district is working to ensure educators and families have accurate information about the reading progress of students in grades K-3. A Frequently-Asked-Questions document has been posted on the DPS homepage about early literacy assessments and the SPF.

2018 Call for New Quality Schools Released
At tonight's meeting, the DPS Portfolio Management team officially released the
2018 Call for New Quality Schools
.
Under state statute, DPS is required to accept applications for new charter schools every year, and
DPS uses the Call for New Quality Schools (known as the Call) to
extend the same opportunity to district-run schools and to make clear the rigorous, transparent
quality review process to evaluate the quality of applications regardless of governance type.
Letters of intent to apply are due in February, with applications due on April
2
, 2018. Applicants will have access to a number of resources and supports throughout the Call process, including online prerecorded screencasts and webinars, and in-person workshops and office hours.
DPS' top
Denver Plan 2020
goal is to have at least 80% of DPS students attending a high-performing school by 2020. To make this goal a reality, DPS is committed to strengthening our existing schools and welcoming new, quality schools into the district.
