Message from the Senior Warden

In a recent homily, Steve Hayward observed that:

St. Brendan's is in something of a waiting mode right now-not standing still,
but waiting nonetheless to see how the future will unfold, waiting to see
what new settled clergy leadership may evolve, waiting for God to open
that next door to a new future.

He's right. And waiting, as Steve also observed, is difficult. These days, most of
us "expect everything to happen quickly, to happen 'on time' [and] according to
our personal schedules." As I have said before, in many respects we have done remarkably well over the course of the past year and a half. At the same time,
it is clear, I think, that we cannot continue in this place indefinitely. To some
extent, as Steve suggests, we must "wait[ ] for God to open that next door."
But I think we must also work to clarify the direction we wish to take. The Vestry
is working on this, and we will present our thinking in time for our April 30th post service session with Michael Ambler.

As my Mother used to say, "more later
."

Woody Osborne
Senior Warden

P.S.  I hope we can do our part in this year's island roadside clean-cleanup (see below) by cleaning the road from the Nursing Home to the causeway.  Let's discuss this after church on Sunday.

Vestry Meeting Notes

St. Brendan's Vestry met on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 4 PM at the church. Members of the vestry present included Woody Osborne, presiding, Barbara Kourajian, Jo Jacob, Richard Paget, and Skip Greenlaw. Also present was Lis Ingoldsby.

Skip agreed to take notes of the vestry meetings until the annual meeting in July.

We had a brief discussion about a date for the annual meeting- looks like Sunday, July 30th after church. Date will be confirmed at May meeting of vestry. It was
also suggested that we might conduct the stewardship campaign in August after
we established some long range goals with respect to the hiring of clergy.

The Rev Dr. Edward Dufresne submitted a proposal for vestry consideration. Beginning in May, Fr. Dufresne will:
  1. Assist the vestry in helping St. Brendan's become a mission-driven congregation.
  2. Provide leadership development and training for vestry members.
  3. Assist the vestry to address and enhance the quality of community life at St. Brendan's.
  4. Assist the vestry to implement best organizational, management, and governance practices to further the congregation's mission and ministry.
This agreement with Fr. Dufresne will continue through November 2017, and at
that time Fr. Dufresne and the vestry will decide whether to renew the
arrangement. Fr. Dufresne will be compensated $45 an hour plus travel expenses,

All members of the vestry present voted in favor of this proposal.

There was also a continuing discussion whether the vestry might be able to
engage the Rev. Stephen Hayward to meet with the Outreach Team monthly,
and perhaps be willing to provide some pastoral counseling opportunities and
also to engage The Rev. Vesta Kowalski to meet with the Worship Committee to discuss and plan innovative opportunities for worship. Woody will pursue
discussion with Stephen and Vesta.

Peter Tarleton suggested to Woody that we ask all members of the congregation how much time they are willing to offer St. Brendan's for various committees or
to support the mission of the church. Lis suggested that that information might
be available in the time and talent part of last year's stewardship campaign.

The vestry approved payments of two bills for the purchase and installation of acoustical tiles in the parish hall and for the plot plan of the property, which we
will use to repair the entrance to the parking lot and for future landscape considerations. These payments will come from the capital expenditure account.

Outreach Committee Report

The Outreach Committee met at the church on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 1 pm. Members present were Richard Paget, Julie Pierson (by telephone), Mickey
Jacoba, Anne Williams, and Skip Greenlaw. Jo Jacob was also present.

The Team accepted an offer to provide a $1000 scholarship to a graduating
senior of George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill from a very generous member
of the congregation provided that there is sufficient time to have students
apply for the scholarship this year

The Team also agreed to contribute $100 to Community Compass towards the purchase of a "Nursery Gym", which will be used by Linda Shepard's children's playgroup, "Parents Are Leaders". This gym will assist the children to develop their gross motor skills. We will ask Linda Shepard to meet with us at our May meeting to have a discussion about her program.

Jo, Mickey, and Skip had a rambling discussion about the Windowdressers project slated to begin around September 16. We deferred a formal decision to take this on as an outreach project until May when more members of the Outreach team
are present.

Healthcare in Maine- What's Next?

Tuesday evening April 25th at 6:30 there will be free screening of the film
FIX IT: Healthcare at the Topping Point, at St. Brendan's. The program, organized by Tom van Buren, will include a panel discussion on the topic with Lynn Cheney, healthcare navigator, House Representative Walter Kumiega, Moira O'Neill, health care practitioner with a PhD in Nursing and Joe Lendvai of Brooklin, moderator.

FIX IT is an award winning documentary that takes an in-depth look into how our dysfunctional healthcare system is damaging our economy. The waste, bureaucracy and overpricing of the insurance-based system remains unaffordable for tens of millions of Americans. discouraging physicians and negatively impacting the nation's health and productivity. The film offers a common sense solution that is good for business, good for patients and good for providers.

Everyone is welcome!

Window Dressers Project Update

Window Dressers central is conducting six regional trainings over the next
10 days to roll out the newest versions of the record keeping and measuring software.  Skip Greenlaw and Steve Hayward are attending the training in
Ellsworth on Saturday.
Jo will attend one of the others.  Skip will be bringing
labels to church that will need to be affixed to postcard-size cards promoting the project and encouraging participation. We hope that some of us can pitch in after church to help out. These cards can be then taken and given to friends and acquaintances who might be interested in ordering inserts this year. Other informational cards will be placed strategically around the community.

Scripture Notes for the Second Sunday in Easter

We continue today to celebrate the Lord's resurrection, a celebration which
will last for fifty days in all (and which is celebrated again every Sunday  throughout
the year). The Gospel reading begins with the first Easter Day when Jesus appeared
in the evening to the disciples and gave them his  Spirit. The story continues with his appearance the following Sunday when Thomas met the Lord and confessed his faith. It concludes with words for us: "Blessed are they who have not seen, yet believe."

On the Sundays of Easter, the first reading is always from the Acts of the Apostles.
In today's reading from Acts, we hear a portion of Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost proclaiming the resurrection. God has raised Jesus; and Peter and the
other Apostles are witnesses of the resurrection.

The second lesson on the Sundays of Easter this year comes from Peter's
first epistle. This is a sermon on the meaning of baptism. Today the message is
about our rebirth into new life in God as we died and rose with Christ in baptism. Nevertheless, in the world we will still have trials and persecutions, Peter tells us,
but in them, our faith is strengthened and purified.

As we gather as Church to celebrate the Lord's resurrection, we find the
living presence of Jesus in his Word, in the sacraments, and in our life as
the community of the Body of Christ. We find ourselves made by the Holy Spirit
into a community that is the visible and living sign of the risen Christ.

Lord, I will trust you.

Help me to journey beyond the familiar and  into the unknown.

Give me the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.

Christ of the mysteries, I trust you to be stronger than each     storm  within me.

I will trust in the darkness and know that my times are in your hand.

Tune my spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make my   obedience count for you.
