Poll: Tax Reform
The United States currently imposes the highest combined federal-state business tax rate in the industrialized world. Out of the 34 countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, America ranks first with a 39.1 percent corporate tax rate, compared to an average of 24.9 percent. Additionally, recent estimates have found that Americans now spend over 409 billion dollars and 8.9 billion hours annually trying to comply with the tax code.

The last major reform of our nation's tax code was in 1986. Now, both Congressional leaders and the administration have signaled that streamlining and simplifying the tax code is a top priority for their agenda within the coming year. In June of 2016, House Republicans released a tax reform plan in the Better Way Agenda, highlighting the need to have a simpler and fairer tax code that includes lowering the top individual income tax rate to 33 percent, condensing the system to three simpler tax brackets, and lowering the corporate tax rate to 20 percent.

Question of the Week: Do you believe reforming the tax code should be a top priority for Congress this year?

SURVEY FOR APPALACHIAN
Organizations in Need of Capital

From  TechGROWTH Ohio :

As you may know, regional funders in association with the Appalachia Funders Network are exploring ways to increase the flow of impact capital in the Central Appalachia region. As part of this work, they are looking to better understand the need for capital in Appalachia, especially those intended to propel the region's transition to healthy communities and broadly-shared prosperity. To do this, they are surveying the market (of both capital providers and organizations seeking capital) to identify gaps and capital needs that are not being met.

I encourage you to take ~15 minutes to fill out the survey - your input would be greatly valuable for the region in moving forward, and it can also help ensure that your initiatives / needs are on the radar of potential funders or collaboration partners. Please also distribute this among your networks. The link is here: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3296827/DRAFT-AFN-Phase-1-2017

35th ANNUAL
ART SHOW APPROACHING
Enter by May 1

Even though somedays with the fluctuating weather, we aren't sure if
Spring is on the way, it's here according to the calendar and so are plans and
preparations for our annual Senior Citizens Art Show!

For those not familiar with our Art Show, this year marks 35 years for this fun
and popular event that we have the privilege of hosting and organizing each
year. It's always a treat to see all of the amazing talent we have right here
in our local communities. I encourage you to see for yourself the beautiful art and composition pieces our seniors will have on display. They certainly enjoy sharing their talent for the enjoyment of others and we appreciate their participation in this special event.

Mark your calendars for May 22nd through May 26th (Monday through Friday) and May 30th through June 2nd (Tuesday through Friday). During this time, the artwork of many talented individuals age 55 and older who reside in our ten-county district and beyond will be on display at the Esther Allen Greer Museum on the campus of the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio. A special Tea to honor our artists will be held on Friday, June 2nd at the Greer Museum at 1:00 pm. Artwork will be on display during the dates mentioned from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm daily. Everyone is invited to attend.

In order to have a wonderful variety, we are looking for artwork or essays and poetry from those talented individuals who have a love for art or writing. The deadline is approaching, but there is still time to enter! Participants must be 55 years of age or older and complete an application form. The form, which also includes additional eligibility requirements, is included on our website at  www.aaa7.org, or you can request a hard copy mailed to you by calling our Agency toll-free at 1-800-582-7277. Artwork will be judged in a number of categories, and essay and poetry entries should be no more than 1,000 words in length. In order to participate in the Art Show or Essay/Poetry Contest, items must be delivered to our Administrative Offices in Rio Grande by May 1, 2017, or please call us at 1-800-582-7277 or                       e-mail  info@aaa7.org for more information. Please log on to our website or call our Agency for more information about rules and eligibility requirements.

We hope to see you at the 2017 AAA7 Senior Citizens Art Exhibit this May and June!

STATE OF OHIO SEEKING
Partners  to Support Minority Businesses
Applications due April 21, 2017

The Ohio Development Services Agency (DSA) is seeking partners to help develop and grow Ohio small, minority-owned and socially and economically disadvantaged businesses through the Minority Business Assistance Centers (MBAC) Program. This program supports minority-owned businesses by offering no cost counseling, state certification support, and trainings focused on creating jobs and increasing sales.

"We want to partner with business leaders who can provide the best resources to Ohio minority-owned businesses," said Jeffrey L. Johnson, chief of the Minority Business Development Division at the Ohio Development Services Agency. "By supporting these businesses with resources needed to grow, they will be better able to create jobs and improve their communities."

In order to maintain the highest quality services for Ohio minority-owned businesses, DSA will be conducting an open competition to select MBAC regional partners across the state. Non-profit organizations, economic development organizations, and educational institutions with strong experience in business and economic development will be eligible for the program.

Service areas by city include:
  • Akron
  • Cincinnati
  • Cleveland
  • Columbus
  • Dayton
  • Toledo
  • Youngstown

The Request for Proposals (RFP) is now open until April 21, 2017, with award notifications planned for May 2017. To apply and download the MBAC RFP, visit: www.minority.ohio.gov, under "Minority Business Assistance Center."

The MBAC program is managed by DSA's Minority Business Development Division and is a state initiative to develop and grow Ohio's small, minority-owned and socially and economically disadvantaged businesses.
