State of the States Landscape Report: State-Level Policies Supporting Equitable K-12 Science Education

This report surveys state-level efforts to improve access to K-12 computer science education opportunities in the United States. The report examines progress towards 10 policy priorities widely seen as central to broadening participation in K-12 computer science education and offers recommendations for advocates and policymakers on improving alignment of state-level efforts. Emerging best practices in scaling up computer science education opportunities are also addressed.

Where Non-Techies Can Get With the Programming

When the Georgetown University Law Center offered computer programming last year, it was an experiment, a single class for about 20 students. It was filled almost instantly, and the waitlist swelled to 130. This semester, the law school has five programming classes, and the waitlist still overflowed.  "They aren't going to become programmers, but they realize these are skills that will make them better lawyers," said Paul Ohm, the Georgetown law professor who teaches the course.

Bill Nye on His 'Codebreaker' Mom and How Science Teachers Can Change the World

"These are my people," Bill Nye said ahead of his lecture to some of the 10,000 science educators who attended the National Science Teachers Association's (NSTA) National Conference in Los Angeles last week. When Nye, the well-known 1990s television host of "Bill Nye the Science Guy," vivaciously told the hall full of teachers about how science will help "change the world," he was met with thunderous applause. But in fact, it's this group - teachers on the front lines - who deserve the credit, Nye said.

Promoting Education for Future Cybersecurity Professionals
Earlier this week, McAfee, the globally trusted security provider, announced that it officially launched as a standalone company after previously being owned by Intel. Helmed by Chris Young, the new McAfee promises collaboration and innovation as they look towards the future. They are looking ahead at how they can help the younger generation by promoting education for future cybersecurity professionals. Job Opening: HEOP & CSTEP Programs Counselor
The Ithaca College State Grants Office is looking to hire a full-time HEOP & CSTEP Programs Counselor with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2017. The counselor will Develop and implement activities, programs, and services for students eligible for the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), and the Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program (CSTEM). They will assist in implementing services and activities to improve student achievement, retention, and graduation as well as assist with HEOP and CSTEP activities for the Summer Institute, and assist in monitoring and reconciling program budgets and preparation of reports for New York State. Grant Opportunity: Alliance for Graduate Education and the  Professoriate
The Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program seeks to advance knowledge about models to improve pathways to the professoriate and success for historically underrepresented minority doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty, particularly African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islanders, in specific STEM disciplines and/or STEM education research fields.
