Special Holy Week Opportunities

Sunday April 9 is Palm Sunday

Stations of the Cross  Throughout the week,
(starting on Monday) you are invited to come to the sanctuary (whenever the building is open)
to meditate at the 14 Stations of the Cross.  This is an ancient Lenten tradition to help focus on the journey of Jesus to the cross.

(No Wed. meal or worship this week)

Maundy Thursday April 13  will feature a unique worship experience called the Seder Meal.
This is a celebration of the Jewish Passover and its connections with our Christian celebration of the Lord's Supper will be in the fellowship hall around tables at 6:30pm (you need to sign up ahead to participate, more info).

Good  Friday April 14 will feature a special worship service called Worship Around the Cross at 6:30pm.  This is a quiet reflective worship with lots of special musical messages.  You are welcome to come earlier or stay after to meditate at the stations of the cross mentioned above.   We are inviting people to bring a cross with them from their home to add to the collection of crosses from around the world that will provide our focal point for this worship.

Easter Sunday Celebrations begin at sunrise at Freedom Park with a informal ecumenical outdoor (weather permitting) at 6:30am  then join us back at Joy for an   Easter Pancake Breakfast  7:30-noon  prepared by our youth (free will donation) and festival worship at 8:15 and 10:15am

Please order you Easter Flowers by this Sunday (April 9)

Sorry we didn't get this out sooner.   We are looking for 48 people willing to donate Easter Flowers at a cost of $10.   If you want to give the flowers in honor or in memory of someone we will acknowledge that in our Easter bulletin and newsletter.  To order a flower, you can fill out the information and enclose a check in the special envelopes at the back of sanctuary on Sunday. If you can't make it on Sunday, you can send the check and information to the church office.    [email protected]  Thanks

Celebration Sunday for Capital Appeal

Three weeks ago we kicked of our appeal to raise $30,000 for some special projects (replacing 3 aging furnace/AC units and finishing the basement).  Gifts and pledges have started coming in...in fact pledges have already topped $21,000 toward our goal.  You should have received a pledge card and letter in the mail, if you didn't, let us know.  You can also make you pledge electronically click here.  Our hope is to have all the pledges received by this Sunday so we can announce the completion of our Appeal. If everyone does something we can meet our goal.
Thank you for your support!

sederJoy to host a Passover Seder Meal

On Maundy Thursday (April 13) 6:30pm we will offer a special worship experience called a Seder Meal.  The roots of our Holy Communion celebration are in the last supper of Jesus with his disciples, which was a celebration of the Passover or Seder Meal.

We will gather around tables in the fellowship hall for this special interactive, family friendly worship experience.
The meal is more of a symbolic meal so if you are hungry go ahead and eat before you come...as part of the meal we will  tell the story of Passover and taste the traditional foods, lamb, herbs, haroseth, wine/grape juice, matzoh bread, etc.  As part of the meal we will also celebrate our Christian Holy Communion.

There is no cost for the Seder, but you will need to register so we know how many places to set.  Look for the sign up sheet in the Narthex.
Deadline to sign up is this Sunday

If you miss a sermon...

and want to catch up or share it with someone who might appreciate it. We record our worship each week and post it on our web page as well as the bottom of this weekly electronic newsletter.  Just click on the YouTube button.

Annual Women's Spring Banquet

The annual women's Spring Banquet will be Sunday, April 30th at 5:00pm.  The program will feature Pati Kachel who is a professional storyteller and will be doing the life of Katie Luther.  Ticket sales will begin Sunday, April 2nd between services and will also be available in the church office.  The meal will be prepared by Ken Roen and the men of Joy.  Tickets for the meal and program are $10 and children under 5 are free.

All Women are Invited to April's Bible Study  "Galatians: Christian Faith and Christian Freedom"

All women are invited to attend the monthly Bible study on Tuesday April 11th at 1:30 PM in the Fireside Room.  We will complete our study of the book of Galatians, the New Testament Letter that Martin Luther believed was central to his theology and belief that we are justified by grace through faith in Christ.   Pastor Steve is our leader and guide during these four months of the study of Galatians.  We are happy that he is sharing his expertise with us as he leads us in our discussion of Galatians.  This month we will explore Paul's understanding of Christian freedom, reflect deeply on what it means to love our neighbors as ourselves, and understand the fruit of the Spirit as God's gift to the Christian community. The text for April's study is Galatians 5:1-6:18, and it is entitled "For Freedom Christ Has Set Us Free."  Do join us!

People Needed to Make Pairs of Hand-Warmers for the WELCA Triennial Gatherin g
At every Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA, women attending from the various Synods hand out a "token" gift to new friends at the Triennial.  The Synod Women's Board of Northwest Wisconsin is asking for people to make these hand-warmers as gifts.  Many are needed so if you can help with this project, please note the direction sheets on the table in the narthex or on the Triennial Gathering bulletin board in the narthex hallway and make some hand-warmers that we can distribute at the Triennial Gathering in July.  If you have questions about this project, contact Marcia Lindseth or Emilie Horken.  Thanks for your help!

Prayer Shawl Ministry

We are once again in need of prayer shawls. We have given our last one to someone in need. We would like to be able to keep a few on hand so that we have them when the need arises. We pray that we will not  have a need but we want to be prepared. We wish to thank all those who have made prayer shawls in the past. They have meant so much to so many.  If you have any questions please call Emilie Horken at 262-4728.
Help Collect In-Kind Gifts for the Tenth Triennial WELCA Gathering

The Women of the ELCA's Tenth Triennial Gathering will be held July 13-16, 2017 in Minneapolis. We are praying that many women from our church will be able to attend this inspiring Gathering. Check out the bulletin board in the narthex hallway for information on registration, speakers, workshops, tours, worship opportunities, and servant events. The Gathering theme, All Anew, calls us to look at life in a new way. Our Women of the ELCA purpose statement calls us to be there for each other. God call us to make a difference in the world. Through in-kind gifts, we can do it all: We can see into the lives of our gift recipients in Minneapolis and around the world. We can be there for them in relationship and in partnership, and we can make a difference in the world. Our JWELCA would like to invite our Joy congregation to get involved with us as we make/collect the in-kind gifts we will take to the Gathering this summer. The recipients of these gifts will be agencies and partners in Minneapolis and also oversees.

The In-Kind Gifts we will be collecting include the following:
  • Quilt Kits
  • Days for Girls Kits
  • Gift Cards
  • Hygiene Items
  • Clothing

Please note on the table in the narthex the flier about the In-Kind Gifts and help us collect these items. Note the directions for making Quilt Kits and Days for Girls Kits should you wish to make these kits. If you'd like to purchase Gift Cards, please give them to Emilie Horken, JWELCA Treasurer. After Easter we will have a container in the Narthex to collect the Hygiene Items and Clothing (Socks, Underwear in every size and color and white T-shirts for women, children, teens and men.)

Also, we're making and collecting finger labyrinths which will be given to participants at the Triennial Convention and Gathering to use in prayer or as a contemplative exercise. The Women of the ELCA need 5000 finger labyrinths, so if you can help make these, we'd appreciate it. We have patterns for those who sew, knit, and crochet and additional information on Labyrinths. You will find this information on the table in the narthex or contact Marcia Lindseth. Knitters and crocheters may find free patterns for square finger labyrinths at irishlace.net and at evelynclarkdesigns.com.

Church Directory

The directories (both picture and address) are ready to pick up...they are also available on the church web page on a password protected page (please call the office for the password)
if you have corrections please let the office know.

Name Tag s... are a great way to help people remember you name.  We are working on a system to have more permanent name tags available, but for now any time you can wear one helps the rest of us get to know you. Thank you.

Thrivent Financial Updates

Action Team Projects:
Thrivent benefit & associate members, please check out the bulletin board in the hallway for information and sign-up for projects that can be funded with $250 seed money from Thrivent. As of March 1st we have 63 projects listed with 23 signed-up to lead, 15 applications accepted and 7 projects completed - we are well on our way. The bulletin board and these numbers will be updated the 1st of every month. Thank you for your support!

Choice Dollars:
Thrivent benefit members, If you have Thrivent Choice dollars available for use, we have two very important messages:  1) If you have choice $ available from 2016 you can still direct those $, but the deadline is Mar. 31st - so please don't' delay or those $ will be lost.  2) You can direct choice $ to any of 1,000+ non-profit organizations. If you choose Joy to receive this money, it will be used to fund the Capital Maintenance fund that Joy desperately needs. Thrivent members of Joy have the potential to direct $3,000 back to Joy. With approx. 85 Thrivent members at Joy, only 20-25 of qualify for this program, but less than half do so. The process is easy and quick - either by phone or on-line.

All Members of Joy:
If all of this seems somewhat confusing to you, you're not alone. If you would like more information about these programs or clarification of your Thrivent status, you have three avenues:  1) Check out information on the table in the Narthex.  2) Talk to Jim or Bobbie Flatz in church or at home (715-262-5960).  3) Call Kim at John Levi's Thrivent office at 715-425-2056.

Thrivent is looking for ways to give away millions of dollars with its non- profit status - let's help them.

Be part of a Thrivent Action Team

Thousands of dollars are available for us to use projects in our congregation and community...come find out how you can be part of it.

HEADS UP! Library furniture has been rearranged!

Spring is a time of change, "when everything old is new again".

Members of the decorating committee have rearranged the furniture placement in the library. The sofa and cushy chairs now form a comfy reading area next to the books in the library. The table is by the kitchenette area for coffee service and video presentations.
We will gladly accept your comments on the change and possible tweaks to the set up. Nothing is bolted to the floor and can shift as the needs arise.
We ask that the room and its contents be treated with respect because many of the furniture pieces were purchased with memorial funds.

Thank you.
