New Year, New Hope
Message from Our President
Dear Friends:
We have had a few busy but productive months closing out the end of 2016 and welcoming a new year and new hope in 2017.

First and most importantly, we want to acknowledge our great supporters – that’s YOU. In October, we ran our first ever Un-Event Event. This fundraiser brought in many long-time and new supporters, raising a total of $108,000.

Our December year end appeal, “Be Someone’s Hope", raised an additional $100,000. All in all, we raised $208,000 between the two events that goes toward improving patient access to clinical trials. This was a huge group effort from all our supporters. Thank you so much to everyone who donated.

It’s a New Year with new opportunities and it’s also critical that we honor the past. As many of you know, Lazarex served our first patient ten years ago in 2007. To commemorate our achievements, we will be hosting a ten-year anniversary gala on August 5, 2017 at Levi’s Stadium. Be sure to save the date. We will be celebrating the power of ten and all our supporters. Join us!

As proud as I am to shine the light on Lazarex, it is important to note that just before Christmas, the New York Times published an article, In Cancer Trials, Minorities Face Extra Hurdles, reinforcing one of the very reasons Lazarex exists. This article underlines how unbalanced access to cancer trials truly is. Please take a moment out of your day to read this article.

Thank you again for all that you do to support Lazarex and ensuring that cancer patients from all walks of life have access to FDA cancer clinical trials to extend their lives and to beat cancer.

With love,

Dana Sig

Crystal Trevillion

Meet Crystal Trevillion,
poet and cancer survivor

This month’s VIP (Very Important Patient) story is about Crystal Trevillion.

Crystal Trevillion has been through more in her young life than many experience in a lifetime. In the past few years, she has been diagnosed with leukemia, been cured, and then relapsed – did we mention she did this all before graduating high school? This new high school graduate is a courageous fighter who is grateful for Lazarex. With our aid, Crystal and her mother frequently fly from California to Pennsylvania to participate in a much needed cancer clinical trial.

Read more about her story (including her inspirational poem).

When Friends Band Together, Great Things Are Possible

Team Bang It Out for Julio! raised over $40,000 for Lazarex Cancer Foundation in support of their friend, Julio Llerenas, a special education educator and triathlete who was diagnosed with leukemia last summer. Though cancer turned his life upside down, Julio vowed to turn lemons into lemonade.

Following his lead, 11 of his friends plus Julio’s partner, Lazarex’s CAO Maribel Montanez, came together as Team Bang It Out for Julio! to run in the 2016 Reebok Ragnar Napa Valley Relay and raise funds for Lazarex.

Learn more about Julio’s great story, as told by the fighter himself!

United Fun for All

United At the end of 2016, our generous airline sponsor, United Airlines, invited us to participate in their 11th Annual Family Day held at the United SFO Maintenance Center. What started as just a way to say thank you to their staff members has grown in to so much more. With over 7,000 people in attendance, the show has transformed from a small gathering to a major event. Plane pulls, cockpit tours, and a zip line are just a few of the activities set up around the hanger for everyone’s enjoyment.

Check out the fun photos from the event.
