Congratulations Educator of the Year, Corey McCauley!
It is with great honor that we announce Mr. Corey McCauley as the HUHS Educator of the Year for the 2016-17 school year!
Wow, what a year 2017 has been for Mr. Corey McCauley! In January, he was inducted into the Richland Center Wrestling Hall of Fame, in February he was announced as this WTEA Teacher of the Year for Technology & Engineering Education in the state of Wisconsin, he received the award in March at a ceremony, and now in April, he has been named the Educator of the Year at Hartford Union High School for the 2016-17 school year. It is a recognition that is well earned and well deserved! Congratulations Mr. Corey McCauley, HUHS is lucky to have you as a teacher, coach, adviser, and professional! Thank you for all that you do at HUHS, a formal press release will be included next week.

AP Art Studio Art Show
Each year, the AP Art Studio students in Ms. Dawn Romano-Bloomer's class, compile all of the pieces they have worked very hard on throughout the year to put together an Art Show at a local Hartford Business. This year, the students have put together a show at Puebla's Kitchen in Hartford. The students hosted a reception on Tuesday and will host a second reception on Sunday, April 23, from 11 am - 12:30 pm. Please support our students and all of their hard work throughout the year, the exhibit will be up until April 27. The Daily News did a piece on their exhibit, click here to read the coverage. 

Technical Writing and Auto Maintenance Collaborate

Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Stone brought their Technical Writing students to observe the Auto Maintenance classes  on Thursday.  The students had just learned about writing professional business reports.  For the assignment, they focused on informational reports specifically and gathered data from the auto classes.  While observing, they asked the Auto Maintenance students questions, and some students even participated in the activities they were observing.  The students will turn their observations into a formal report for the class.
AP Art History

Students in Ms. Kieckhaefer's AP Art History class are reviewing for the AP exam in May by playing a fun and informative game of charades. Select students choose a piece of art studied earlier in the year and recreated it. Those in the audience tried to guess the piece and recall fun facts they remember about each piece. 
Students Attend Youth Transition Conference
We all know how tough it can be for  our  students to go from having support  at home, in  high school, to  transitioning into adulthood. The Youth Transition Conference was set up to help high school seniors to prepare for their futures by attending different sessions that focused on  work skills, self advocacy, assistive technologies, healthy living, etc. A number of our seniors were able to attend the event to help them gather the resources and information that they will need in order to ease the transitions they will experience next year! 
Culinary Arts III & Food Services Team Up!
On Wednesday, the kitchen made Chicken & Rice Soup, a recipe developed by Nick Czarnota, Andraea Theoharis, and Jeremiah Cooper of Mr. Schmidt's Culinary Arts III class. The recipe was part of a challenge to modify a soup recipe to meet the nutrient standards of the school lunch program. Kitchen team members tasted 10 different soup recipes made by the students to select this year's winner. The students in the lunch room had great reviews of the soup! The sign below was posted in the cafeteria for the day!


Youth Apprenticeship Students at Uptown Chevrolet
A number of our students participate in the Youth Apprenticeship and Co-Op programs through Agri-Science, Business & IT, and Technology & Engineering Education. The students shown below, are three of our students that have the opportunity to work at Uptown Chevrolet in Slinger. Uptown has worked very well with our Youth Apprenticeship students, giving them a variety of unique opportunities. Students with a great work ethic and the dedication to the field are often given the opportunity to continue on with the dealership, full-time, and in most cases, with great contributions to their future education plans and tools. Pictured below are Michael Scherer, Marco Gomez, and Jackson Wagner whom are putting the skills they learned in their TEE classes to use on the job, earning more credits-off site, and getting paid, all during their regular school day.

For the Class of 2017 Graduation, we are collecting childhood photos of seniors for a pre-graduation ceremony video. Please submit a childhood (5 yrs. or younger) photo or digital file (.jpg or .tif) to: info@huhs.org or mail a non-returnable photo to: Hartford Union High School, Attn: Receptionist, 805 Cedar Street, Hartford, WI 53027


Graduation Tickets will be distributed starting Thursday May 18.  
Graduation tickets for the ceremony will be available at the Receptionist desk (During resource, before and/or after school).  Graduates must present an ID before tickets can be issued.  Each graduate will receive (7) seven tickets for the graduation ceremony and the graduate does not required a ticket for the ceremony.   SENIOR SURVEY MUST BE COMPLETED TO RECEIVE TICKETS

May 3 - Testing & Focus on Connections/Tours
The school day on Wednesday, May 3 will look different for all students:  
  • No school for seniors
  • Students in grades 9-11 will attend school during the normal hours of 7:25 AM - 2:45 PM
  • Bus routes will run as normal before and after school
  • Lunch will be served as normal
No classes will be held. Instead, students will be engaged in other activities as described below.
 
Freshmen and Sophomores
All students in grades 9 and 10 will take the ACT Aspire. This is a state-required test that provides important information to the state, schools, and students. In addition providing schools with data to inform decisions about curriculum and instruction, the test predicts individual students' scores for the ACT taken in their junior year.
 
Parents of freshmen and sophomores will receive more information about the ACT Aspire via email in the next week.
 
Juniors
All juniors will participate in both local business/college tours as well as complete their Focus on Connections event. The Connections event is a personal finance simulation required for the Focus on Careers course and for graduation. Students will spend 2-3 hours in the Fieldhouse living a month based on their chosen occupational salary and life choices.  
 
During the time opposite of the Connections Event, students will tour local businesses or colleges of their choice. Due to the time limitation we can only offer college tours to UW-Washington County and MPTC - West Bend.  We also have several local businesses that have volunteered to show students the many career opportunities available here in Washington County.
 
LOVE>hate 2nd Annual 5K Walk/Run

The 2nd Annual LOVE>hate 5K Run/Walk will be held  Saturday, May 6, 2017.

Focus On Connections

This year Hartford Union High School is once again seeking the assistance of local businesses and community members to continue the unique learning experience with our Focus on Connections event.  This event is required for all juniors to attend to simulate a month of financial responsibilities of their 27 year old self.  Our event is scheduled for May 3, 2017.
 
As a volunteer, you will play a key part in assisting our students with paying their monthly bills, and choosing appropriate entertainment based on their salary and budget.  If you, or someone you know, are interested in helping out please reply to Beth Hermann at 262-670-3200 ext. 208 or via email at beth.hermann@huhs.org
 
The date for this year's event is Wednesday, May 3, 2017.  The scheduled times for the event is 7:30 AM - 2:30 PM.  However, you should plan to arrive between 7:00 AM - 7:15 AM to check in at our Volunteer station.  If you cannot commit to a full day, that's fine.  We do offer a Shift A (7:00 AM - 10:30 AM) and Shift B (11:00 AM - 2:30 PM).  This information will be included in the follow up materials.

District Decision and Appeals Process
Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community,
 
The District Administration has developed a District Decision and Appeals Process that we believe will help all of us strengthen our communication, and help students, staff, parents, and community navigate the District's system more easily.  The process was initially developed by your District Leadership Team, and then reviewed and endorsed by the Board of Education.  The District Leadership Team will continue to update the Process periodically.   A few, brief notes about the Process are in order.
 
  • Attached, you will find the Purposes and Guide for the Process.
  • Next, you will find the District Decision and Appeals Process.  The far left column, Areas, lists the items about which you may need to make a contact.  The remaining columns (Initial Contact, First Level Appeal, etc.) are the people you should contact - in order from left to right - to help you.  Please follow the order given.
  • The last page is the list of Descriptors/Definitions which define the terms used in the Areas (far left) column of the Process.  That should help, too.
 
Please let us know your thoughts and suggestions about how to improve the Process.  You should communicate with your Principal, Dan Dobner, or you may contact me directly...

Spring is in the air and many people are already out starting to prepare their gardens for the warmer weather plantings of flowers and vegetables.   Did you know, that before working in the garden you should be sure your tetanus vaccination is up-to-date?  Here are some additional safety recommendations from the CDC to have a relaxing, safe and healthy gardening season.
Amazon Smile
The HUHS Scholarship Foundation Inc. provides scholarships to graduating seniors from HUHS who apply on line their senior year through the counseling department web site, generally right after the 1st of January each year.  The number of scholarships vary annually generally there are over 40 scholarships ranging in value from $700 - $2,000 to selected students.  The scholarship process is handled through HUHS and rating of scholarships and selection is handled through the Board of Directors of the foundation.

Our scholarship foundation has a registered account with AmazonSmile as a 503(c)(3) organization any purchases you make after selecting "HUHS Scholarship Foundation" as your charity of choice will receive a donation of 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases made through AmazonSmile.  

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. Goodwill Donations for Central Middle School
Only a few more weeks left!!
Central Middle School is participating in the Pack'er Up Donation Challenge. Special Education Teacher Sue Gebben is having her students collect, count and prepare items for donation to Goodwill in the hopes of winning the challenge and having Packer Great Donald Driver come to their school.  They are over 55,000 plus items, but need MORE!!!  Every little bit will help in these last weeks of the collection.  Please, If you have any items for donation, please consider dropping it off at Central (1100 Cedar Street).  You can also drop off at a Goodwill location and tell them how many items you have and that it is for Central Middle School.  Items can be dropped off any time during the day at CMS.   If you have any questions you may contact  Sue Gebben .

Washington County Clean Sweep
Attention Parents! Washington County has asked us to inform you of an opportunity for you to dispose of Hazardous Water, Electronics & TVs, Large Household Appliances, Pharmaceutical Medicines and Used Tires.
The first collection this year will be held on  Saturday, May 6th at the: Washington County Slinger Highway Shop, 314 West Washington St., (Hwy 175), Slinger, WI 53086 ( 8:00am-Noon).

Student Services
ACT Testing
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org . When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $42.50 and the ACT with writing is $58.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver. 
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. The test dates for the 2016-2017 school year are:

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 28 (no cost to the student on February 28).  When considering whether or not to sign up to take the April 8 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 28 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test based upon February results.

Boys Tennis Wins Brown Deer Invite

At No. 1 doubles, Hartford sophomore Tanner Brault and senior Matt Melsheimer picked up a 10-point, thirdset tiebreaker victory. Brault and Melsheimer won, 10-6, to capture the match 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.
At No. 3 doubles, the sophomore duo of James Ceman and Michael Fulop won 6-4, 6-2.
The Orioles' Kevin Kreuser was near a comeback victory at No. 4 singles (1-6, 6-4, 5-1) before the rain became too much for play to continue.
"Kevin's opponent was definitely the best singles player Kevin has played thus far, but Kevin made a very nice comeback after a tough first set and was leading," coach Andy Andress said. "Tanner and Brault had some ups and downs, but ultimately played very well in the match tiebreak to pull out a nice win. James and Michael looked good securing their straight sets victory.
"This was a good test in preparation for our five matches this weekend and then the start of conference play next week."

Spring Sale

HUHS Booster Club Pancake Breakfast

 

The Booster Club is hosting it's first annual all you can eat pancake breakfast. Sunday, May 7th in the HUHS cafeteria. Tickets will be available for purchase in the Athletic Office starting Monday, April 10thwith either cash or check. Purchase price is $8.00 or $10.00 on the day of the event. We will be serving pancakes and sausage from 8:30-11:00 with a short recognition ceremony of some student athletes and their achievements including scholarships earned from Booster Club and H Club. Make it an early Mother's Day event and surprise mom a week early! Come out and support the Booster Club and our student athletes.  If you can't make it to the breakfast but would like to make a donation, that can also be submitted to the Athletic Office.

WFCA Football Game
Please join the Hartford community in congratulating HUHS Seniors Quintin Meinerz and Ryan Zuern, who will represent Hartford in the 2017 Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) Annual All Star Game.  The All Star games are on  July 15 and 16 in Oshkosh.  We are proud of these excellent young men, and cheer them on as they represent what is Hartford's best!
 

The WFCA and Children's Hospital have teamed up for this event.   Each participating player is asked to fund raise $750.00 for children in need at Children's Hospital.  Quinn and Ryan ask for your support.  The fundraising can be done in any of several ways.
