Association of Lutheran Church Musicians
January 1, 2018 e-newsletter

Greetings as we embark on 2018, this new year of grace!

I am always struck at the beginning of each calendar year how things can look different, feel different. We often (hopefully) have new energy and focus, and our goals can seem clearer. I suspect that is a combination of getting some post-holiday rest; spending some time away from work or school, and then returning with a new sense of purpose; and perhaps enjoying gifts from Christmas celebrations, or just reveling in family time, or quiet time!

This year we will move quickly through the Epiphany season - and then we need Lent and Easter anthems ready! We might wish in mid-March that Easter Sunday really is an "April Fool's" prank, especially if the choirs aren't quite ready! But I encourage you to use this time of rest and renewal to your advantage, and then come back with that vim and vigor needed to lead and guide musicians and assembly in the important task of praising our God and loving our neighbor. This is our high and holy calling. May this year be full of blessings and joy!

Thank you!
We'll do a more official thank-you and report on donations in the February e-newsletter with a full list of donors in the spring issue of  CrossAccent.  In the meantime, many, many thanks to all who so generously donated to ALCM in 2017. Your financial gifts--and all of the other ways you support ALCM--are making possible some wonderful new ventures in 2018 and beyond. Happy new year!

2018 will be a year for ALCM members and church musicians around the country to participate in grass-roots, practical workshops--all under the title  Hearts-Hands-Voices. Forty sites have been confirmed so far and details have been added to the ALCM website. Registration will open soon.

For those of you looking for more than just a day-long workshop, plan to join us on the campus of Valparaiso University from July 23-26, 2018 for four days of skill-strengthening in a variety of areas. This event coincides with the last week of Lutheran Summer Music, also being held on the Valpo campus, which will provide additional opportunities for learning, growth, and interaction with the LSM students and faculty.
