And be sure to stop by Valley Milkhouse and celebrate National Raw Milk Cheese Day with Stefanie!

A Fond Farewell to Farmer Marc

So be sure to stock up and find out how you can special order products directly from the farm in the future. We wish Marc, Joanna and Clover all the best. They will be greatly missed. (As a parting gift, Curt will be spinning Disco tunes all morning, especially for Farmer Marc!)

Superfoods: Claytonia

Claytonia is also known as Miners lettuce, winter purslane, Indian lettuce, spring beauty and miners green - all names that reveal a bit about this amazing and succulent  wild green superfood.
The term"miner's" lettuce refers to the California gold miners who came across this wild plant growing in large numbers throughout the foothills. It became a much valued food source that provided nourishment during times when other food supplies were running low or not available. Back in the mid 1840's times were tough. Those who were smart viewed this highly nutritious green as a gift from the earth to be consumed for its life sustaining nutrients, including Vitamin C which helped to prevent scurvy for these gold mining immigrants.

Benefits:
Spring is the traditional time of year to partake in cleansing rituals and  fasting. Many herbalists believe that these wild greens are offered during this time of year specifically to be gathered and used to cleanse the body.  Claytonia is one of these purifying greens that helps to fortify and filter our blood and lymph systems when consumed.  Being high in chlorophyll, in addition to antioxidant-rich nutrients, like Vitamin C, Claytonia can be a great detoxifier, helping to eliminate environmental toxins and heavy metals stored in the liver.  Claytonia can be juiced for concentrated effects during a  juice fast .  Cleansing teas using  liver herbs  can also be ingested during this time to adjunct the benefits of this springtime cleanser.

Claytonia is available this week at Asbury Village Farm

Spring Recipes
Celebrate the Season!

Butter Glazed Roasted Radishes with Fresh Herbs
Radishes are usually thought of as a raw-only vegetable, but they're delicious roasted, too, which tames their spicy flavor considerably. Here, they're roasted until tender and bursting with juice, then tossed with melted butter and fresh herbs. Radishes are available this week at Scholl Orchards.

Valley Milkhouse
This Saturday marks an annual favorite: International Raw Milk Cheese Appreciation Day! Started by the multi generational families behind some of the world's prized cheeses like Roquefort and Parmigiano Reggiano, this holiday honors and celebrates traditional cheesemaking practices that date back hundreds of years. Using fresh raw milk to make cheese is at the heart of the story. At Valley Milkhouse, they are celebrating by sampling some of their cave aged reserve batches of Blue, Goldenrod and Lady's Slipper. Come by for a taste of these ripe and funky raw milk ferments. Also, Witchgrass is back for spring! And don't miss their super creamy yogurt, buttermilk, Clover and Thistle.
