Service Projects

We are offering two types of service projects this year. Are you more active (enjoy doing something) or passive (like collecting something)? Whichever your preference, we have an opportunity for you to serve.
ACTIVE PROJECTS:
We have partnered with two off-site two local charities to provide them some hands-on support: the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky and Welcome House of Northern Kentucky. Both sites will involve landscaping, cleaning, painting, and other physical type jobs.

We have a limited number of spots, so please sign up only if you intend to serve that day.
COLLECTIONS:
We are asking everyone coming to the assembly to please bring one of the following items. These collections are being made for the Women's Crisis Center of Northern Kentucky and the Fair Haven Rescue Mission. Items needed include: Women's personal hygiene products, personal care items (especially deodorant), flip flops (all sizes) and umbrellas and non perishable food supplies.
Volunteers Needed During the Assembly
The Indiana-Kentucky Synod Assembly needs volunteers! We can use assistance on Wednesday afternoon to unload and set-up, on Thursday to help with registration, be greeters, assist in the plenary hall and with worship, and on Friday and Saturday to serve in the plenary hall and other areas. Welcome to the I-K Synod Staff, Pastor Dan Fugate
We are pleased to welcome Pastor Dan Fugate as the synod's new Assistant to the Bishop for Discipleship, beginning Monday, May 8, 2017. Pastor Fugate's ministry will focus on equipping, empowering, and encouraging the faith communities across the territory in Lifelong Faith Formation and Youth and
Young Adult Ministries. He will also serve as key liaison with Campus Ministries, lead planner for the program aspects of our annual Synod Assembly, and steward of the synod's relationship with the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (the synod's companion church in Indonesia).
Dan will also be available for Sunday worship leadership and educational opportunities and will serve in other ways as needed and requested as a represent of the Office of the Bishop of the I-K Synod.
Mobilizing the Mission
The Lutheran Foundation is hosting a seminar for pastors and lay people in Northeast Indiana entitled "Mobilizing the Mission" by Rev. Dr. Peter Meier, Executive Director of the Center for US Missions. Meier will offer a presentation on Wednesday, April 26, 9:00 - 3:00, at the office of the Lutheran Foundation, Fort Wayne IN. Our Newest Cross
Our newest cross, from Faith Lutheran in Owensboro, KY begins with a Fleuree Cross which is based on a Budded Cross (the buds signifying immature faith). The Fleuree Cross has arms that end in flowers, which are in bloom, signifying a mature faith. The cross is further adorned with a variety of flora signifying thejoy of the empty cross which once held the body of Christ, with stylized pansies in the forefront. The cross was fashioned by congregation member and woodworker David Acey. Each layer is made from a separate wood and the completed cross was lacquered to show the beautiful color and grain of each natural wood.
Steeple People Bookstore Closing
On May 20th, Paul Ritter will be closing Steeple People Bookstore at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. If you have time, stop by to see Paul and thank him for his 13 years of service.

Penumaka was ordained April 6, 1991 in the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church in India, and this will be his first call serving in the ELCA. His installation service will be held on April 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran, 2625 Elm Swamp Rd., Lebanon, IN. All are welcome to attend.

Special Concert April 23
The 35 voice A Cappella Choir from Manchester University, North Manchester, IN, will sing in concert on Sunday, April 23rd at 3:00 PM in St. John Lutheran Church, 501 South 7th St., Richmond, IN.

Student loan debt (an unbelievable $1.3 trillion dollars owed) now exceeds total credit card debt, and the average college graduate has $30,000 in student loans to repay. The Federal Reserve found that 31% of borrowers are running 90 days or more late on student loan repayment, and there are now over 100,000 borrowers who have their Social Security benefits garnished for defaulted student loans (a 500% increase). Clearly, there is a crisis of student loan debt affecting many families, and the debt problems have an impact on stewardship and ability to be generous.
