Why is Philmont the "cool" little village that could?

A simple phone call from Claverack "we've got daffs - want some?"

Thanks to 20 residents, business owners, and neighbors who accomplished so much for a great afternoon of Main Street digging, planting and hanging with neighbors!  Carolyn Stern, PBI project organizer, Elinor Pine, Charlie Doheny, Karen Davala, Tom Buckner, Joanne Vilaghy, Sheri Bolevice, Carol Block, Jeanine, Theresa, Alita Earnhart, and Rachel, Purpose and P-CAN group, Cumberland Farms, Philmont Library, Village Memorial Park, Philmont Kitchen/Co-op, Pocket Park, Village Office.

What's the Daffodil Project?

During 2016, the Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack celebrated the 300th anniversary of the 1716 founding of the church and in 2017, the Church will celebrate the 250 anniversary of the current building (built in 1767).

During the fall of 2015, as part of this celebration, the Claverack community and the church planted Dutch bulbs. Susan Ihlenburg, a member of the church, organized the planting of thousands of tulips to spell out the number "300" on the church hillside and more than 1,000 daffodils were planted on the church grounds and cemetery. In addition, over 20,000 daffodil bulbs were purchased at wholesale (at 20 cents/bulb) from the Dutch bulb company, K. Van Bourgondien & Sons, then distributed (at cost, with no markup) and planted by homeowners in the Claverack Hamlet. There have been orders ranging from 10 bulbs ($2) to be planted around a mailbox post, to 300 bulbs ($60) one for each of the 300 years, to 1,000 bulbs ($200) planted in clumps on a large lawn area near deciduous trees.

This celebration was a great success with the cheerful appearance of thousands of tulips and daffodils on the church grounds and 20,000 daffodil flowers in the Hamlet and beyond in the spring of 2016.

In the fall of 2016, we again purchased 20,000 daffodil bulbs to be planted by the Claverack community to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the 1767 Church building, so there is another opportunity to plant daffodil bulbs that will bloom in the spring of 2017 along with those planted in the fall of 2015. It is hoped that these bulb plantings will become a yearly tradition in Claverack to help celebrate our historic Dutch Church and Dutch heritage, with the next goal of planting a total of 100,000 bulbs by 2020... perhaps, eventually leading to a yearly Daffodil Festival throughout the Town of Claverack.

And now the Village of Philmont joining with a goal of 20,000 bulbs by 2020!
