Volunteers Demonstrate that
"Food is Community"
Volunteers (like Vicky & Ty Shen, pictured left) prepared and delivered holiday meals to our  critically ill  clients.
In 2017 we delivered 600,000 medically tailored meals to 2,000 critically ill individuals and their families. To help us accomplish this feat, we welcomed more than 5,600 volunteers into our kitchen to prepare and package these life-saving meals that our clients depend on.

We are so grateful to our dedicated volunteers, like Vicky and Ty Shen, who demonstrate that "food is community" by doing their part to make sure our most vulnerable neighbors are not sick, hungry, and alone. For more than 15 years, this father-daughter duo has delivered holiday meals and gifts to our clients' homes.

"I've been a firm believer that those who can help, should," writes Ty Shen. "Regardless if it's time or other resources, helping our fellow man is our responsibility."

Vicky and Ty's generous spirit of giving caught national attention! Check out their story on Upworthy.

Nutrition Tip:
How To Identify Whole Grains
Consuming whole grains instead of white or "refined" grains can help lower cholesterol and keep blood sugar levels steady. They also are an excellent source of Vitamin B, Vitamin E, and minerals.  When shopping for whole grain items like wheat, rice, corn, barley, oats, or quinoa, our nutritionists recommend checking the packaging for the words "100% whole grain." Products marked "whole grain" will often contain both whole and refined grains.
