Rabbi's Message
Parshat Vayechi

Parshat Vayechi brings us to the end of Sefer Bereishit and to the end of the saga of our Patriarchs and Matriarchs as we know it.

The seeds have been planted and the future Jewish nation will now undergo a long exile in the land of Mitzrayim. We will soon begin reading Sefer Shemot and the story of the Exodus.
At the end of his life, Yaakov summons all of his children and leaves them with final words, blessings and instructions. Chazal teach us that until this time, there was no real illness in the world. Only once the Torah informs us that Yaakov became a "Choleh" do we have this occurrence. In fact, Chazal teach us that this is a blessing (in disguise) because it gives one an opportunity to give proper goodbyes and put one's affairs in order. Anyone who has ever experienced a sudden loss of a loved one will attest to the fact that besides the shock of the loss, there is an additional layer of pain with the inability to say goodbye to the loved one. People need closure.

Judaism has always been a religion of preparation. We are trained to always expect the unexpected, but to also prepare ourselves for the inevitable. Death is a major part of life and everyone has to face that fact - like it or not!

This Shabbat, Shuls all across the world are raising awareness about end of life issues and the need to prepare accordingly.

Shabbat Shalom
