Lovejoy Country Run: May 6
Online Registration Ends: April 28
Lovejoy Leopards, Inc. invites you to join them for a morning run or walk in the country surrounding Lovejoy High School. The 1K Fun Run will begin at 7:30 AM, followed by the 5K at 8:00 AM. The certified 5K course is a fast course or, if you prefer, you may choose the 1K Fun Run. Races will be chip-timed by Race Chip Timing.
After running, enjoy a pancake breakfast which is included in the race entry fee. Non-race participants may buy tickets at the door ($7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 years and younger eat free) for breakfast.
School Funding
The Texas House and Texas Senate are now considering school finance and the budget. For those of you who have been asking about contacting key legislators regarding school funding, now is the time to make those contacts. Lovejoy ISD Pre-Kindergarten
Lovejoy ISD is accepting applications for tuition-based Pre-Kindergarten. This comprehensive program will be staffed by credentialed teachers and housed on the Puster Elementary School campus. This program will offer enhancements in music, fitness, art, library, science, technology, engineering, and math. We are enthusiastic about providing a Lovejoy education for community members looking for a rich learning experience which will provide a firm foundation for kindergarten and beyond.

LHS Band
Congratulations to the LHS Band Students on their two-day success at UIL this week. This is the first time since 2012 that all Lovejoy High School performing bands received unanimous Division 1 ratings from all judges on Stage and in Sight Reading. Counting all 5A and 6A schools in the region, Lovejoy is one of only two band programs this year to achieve that goal.
LISD 6th - 8th Grade Choirs
The Lovejoy ISD 6th - 8th Grade Choir students participated in Solo and Ensemble on April 18th. The singing Leopards showed exceptional skills.

A Message from the Deputy Superintendent
Advanced Placement Testing
Dear Lovejoy Community:
It is hard to believe we have only twenty-seven days of school left in this school year. In early May, Lovejoy High School will look quite different as a multitude of Advanced Placement (AP) tests are given during the first two weeks of the month. In fact, the number of tests given will be 1,620, to be taken by 846 students in grades 9-12.
Lovejoy High School allows all students to enroll in an AP course if they so choose. If students elect to take an AP course, they must take the AP course exam in May. This is a unique requirement in Lovejoy and, despite this expectation, the mean score in nearly all of the AP courses exceeds either the mean score for Texas and/or the United States.
Advanced Placement tests are scored on a scale of 1-5. Scores of 3 or better are considered passing by the College Board and most colleges and universities. Regardless of whether the college or university accepts the AP exam score for credit, research clearly indicates the benefits to students. In 2007, UT Austin did a comparative study among:
- students who took AP courses and exams in high school
- students who took dual credit courses at a community college while in high school
- students who did neither dual credit nor AP while in high school
The study revealed that even among the students enrolled at this Tier 1 University, AP students outperformed their peers in college GPA, and with a greater percentage earning a degree and completing their degree at a faster pace. This research finding held true even for students who earned a 2 (a failing exam score) on an AP exam. The research from the College Board points to a clear pattern of current and future academic benefits for students who participate in Advanced Placement courses.
This research shaped the development of our academic program in Lovejoy. We know the vast majority of our students attend a college or university after graduating from Lovejoy High School. Given that we want our students to be prepared for post-secondary success, an excellent avenue for preparation is to take at least one AP course in high school. The Advanced Placement courses are college courses taught within the structures and supports of the high school environment. The level of course rigor and teacher expectations mirrors what our students will experience in college. This allows our students to be better prepared when faced with the increased rigor of post-secondary education.
In Lovejoy, we are fortunate to have students who live in homes where education is valued and supported. This allows the district to attract and retain the best and brightest teachers to help students learn and achieve tremendous accomplishments in a variety of endeavors, including academics, fine arts, and athletics.

Majestics Spring Show - Simply the Best: April 20-22
The Majestics Spring Show Simply the Best highlights the 10th Anniversary of the Majestics Dance Team. From its earliest beginnings with 14 members to its largest team of 40 girls, the Majestics have always sparkled and smiled their majestic red lips at sporting events, campus activities, and performance venues. Softball Senior Night: April 21
You are invited to join the LHS Softball team on Friday, April 21st, for Senior Night. This is the last district game at Leopard Park. Senior Night activities will begin at approximately 6:45 PM, with the game beginning at approximately 7:05 PM.
Lovejoy Lacrosse Senior Game Day: April 22
The Lovejoy Lacrosse Club invites everyone to join them for their Senior Day game this Saturday, April 22, at Lovejoy High School Stadium. Game time is 2:00 PM. The Lovejoy Lacrosse team will be taking on the Fort Worth Panthers in their final Varsity home game of the season. The Seniors, George, Cole, Tyler and Logan, will be honored at halftime. Come on out and show your support.
E-Waste Recycling Event: April 22

Relay for Life: April 28
The annual Relay for Life event will be held on April 28th from 6:00 PM - 12:00 PM at the Lovejoy High School Stadium. The Relay for Life Committee will be cutting ponytails for Beautiful Lengths, an organization which, partnered with the American Cancer Society, uses donated hair to create free wigs for women losing their hair due to cancer treatment. The committee is looking for selfless donors to cut their hair onstage at the event to donate to making these wigs for cancer patients. Donors may donate as little as 8 inches, but more if they please. The hair cannot have been chemically treated, have more than 5% grays, or be dyed permanently. Anyone, any age may donate.

Relay for Life will also feature the Mr. Relay contest. Similar to Mr. Lovejoy, Mr. Relay will have male participants from 9th through 12th grades who will compete in several rounds, such as talent and Q&A. A panel of judges (teachers from LHS) will determine the winner.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet: April 30
An Oxfam Hunger Banquet is a memorable, interactive event which brings hunger and poverty issues to life. After 40 years, this volunteer-led effort is still going strong and has changed hundreds of thousands of lives.

WSMS Independent Studies student, Carrie Duke, is planning this hunger banquet for her 2nd semester project.
Participants will choose an income card which will depict what they will have for dinner. Depending on the income card, attendees will receive either a more nutritious and a higher quantity of food, or a less nutritious meal.

Krista Reyna - Class of 2014
Krista Reyna is a Junior at Texas Tech University studying Technical Writing. Krista created a stop-motion claymation for her Senior project at Lovejoy High School. She recently entered the animation into a short-film festival on campus and placed first, even among the film students. She is also currently working on a new project, with previews on You Tube.
