Manufacturing Tax Bonanza!
Congress just dropped the corporate tax rate to 21% but that is just a drop in the tax bucket for manufacturing. There are many other tax advantages to being a manufacturer and those advantages are often overlooked and underutilized by CPA's. Why? Because tax incentives are outside of the CPA's wheel house. To double down on your savings you need to make a claim. Find out how by clicking here. |
TEAMWerx
Innovators! Here's a great business opportunity and a way to contribute to the effectiveness of our deployed troops. TEAMWerx is a DoD sponsored effort to shorten the R&D development cycle in fielding new and critical military systems. It's established basically as an open partnership between industry and the folks establishing system requirements.
SOFWerx is their local Ybor City operation working directly with the military planners at Special Operations Command and Central Command at MacDill. Deployed troops communicate their needs in terms of "force multipliers", that is, "Man if I had something that did this, this would be a piece of cake". At that point the SOFWerx crew starts determining how best to approach the issue and often develop in-house prototypes for rapid deployment and assessment. Then they look to find a path to larger scale production. That's where you come in.
Here are two opportunities for exploration and engagement. Get on this right away as some deadlines are as early as January 5. :

TeamWerx Prize Challenge

NIMS Commitment to Apprenticeship
Here's an input from Montez King, Executive Director of NIMS on their commitment to and the value of apprenticeships. Worth the read! And, if you're ready to act,
email me or call at 813 855-4233.
Dear Colleagues:
As the developer of skills standards and credentials for the advanced manufacturing sector, NIMS is also focused on promoting careers in manufacturing and expanding education and training programs that prepare individuals for these good jobs.
We are pleased to share with you two communications pieces released in the last few weeks that demonstrate NIMS' commitment to build a skilled workforce for the modern economy.
- An article originally appearing in Industry Today about re-imagining a 21st-Century Competency-Based Apprenticeship that complements the new realities of the job market and the student/worker. Read the article here.
- A new Edge Factor video about my own story and how I rose out of an impoverished Baltimore neighborhood to a successful career in manufacturing. Watch the video here.
Please feel free to share these pieces with your partners and networks. Together, we can inspire and prepare more young people for today's and tomorrow's manufacturing careers.
Best Regards, Montez King

Sub-Title: Put The HORSE Before The Cart
You might find this an interesting and quick read to start 2018. The premise is that the promise of LEAN, Six Sigma, various belts, ERP/MRP, automation, etc. fail to produce the desired and expected productivity and competitive improvements is that the basic model has not started with the core basics of the manufacturing process (or have slipped away from them) and you wind up putting the cart before the horse by trying to impose some valuable tools to a weak process. Make a New Year's resolution to assess your fundamentals then make decisions on how to best improve the cart and the horse. If you find you're ready to take a couple steps forward, please contact us and we'll line you up with folks that can assist in reaching your goals. Just click the title to access the article.

Prosper Act
Earlier this month Rep Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce at a Career Source Pinellas and Career Source Tampa Bay hosted conference. She provided insight into a recently passed act on which she has been working arduously - Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform Act or Prosper Act.
To say that Rep Foxx "gets it" is an understatement. She noted how the current Higher Education Act has put students in overwhelming debt and has not led to career preparation. In her remarks she correctly notes that ALL education is CAREER education and the purpose this Act is to push and enable the lifelong learning that is key to career success and innovation. Read her complete statement
here. Read
more on the Prosper Act and the 'take' here.
Now, it's our collective job to foster and drive that lifelong learning and conversion to productivity.
