Members of the Hawaii State House of Representatives toured several rail station construction sites recently, including a stop at HART's Rail Operations Center in Waipahu.  The Executive Director of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation Andrew Robbins led the tour that included House Speaker Scott Saiki and several other House leaders including, Majority Leader Della Au Belatti, Majority Floor Leader Dee Morikawa, and Majority Whip Aaron Ling Johanson.  Robbins also hosted Majority Whip Henry Aquino on a separate tour.

The group visited several West Oahu rail stations currently under construction, paying particular attention to the West Loch Station on the Ewa end of Kamehameha Highway in Waipahu.  Of the nine stations under construction on the West Oahu Guideway, the West Loch Station is nearest completion.

HART Project Manager Paul Christiansen led the tour as the representatives visited all three levels of the West Loch Station including; 1) the entry level with transfer areas for riders of TheBus, a kiss 'n' ride drop-off area and pass gates, 2) the concourse level, and 3) the mezzanine level with both eastbound and westbound passenger access.  Christiansen answered questions and provided project details as the representatives got an up-close look at both the station platform and the elevated guideway.

HART HOSTS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL
TRAIN COMMUNITY DAY!

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation was happy to host its most recent "Train Community Day" at the Rail Operations Center (ROC) in Waipahu.  Several hundred people attended the event.  They were treated to a hands-on look at the first two trains of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project to be eventually joined by eighteen others to comprise the Project's twenty train fleet.

.BEFORE WE LOOK AHEAD
TO 2018...

Many of you will be taking down Christmas lights and decorations over the next few days and in certain cases, that means using a ladder.  That being the case, this would be a good time for a refresher on ladder safety.  In 2013, according to the National Safety Council, 175,000 people were hospitalized due to accidents involving ladders nationwide.

Here are some tips to help keep you and your family safe:

  • Always keep at least three points of contact with the ladder (i.e., two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand)
  • Always place the base of the ladder on a firm, solid surface
  • A straight or extension ladder should be placed 1 foot away from the surface it rests against for every 4 feet of ladder height
  • When you climb, always face the ladder and grip the rungs, not the side rails
  • Climb down a ladder one rung at a time
  • Do not climb with tools in hand - use a tool belt
  • Keep your body between the ladder side rails when climbing
  • Do not lean or overreach - reposition the ladder closer to the work instead
  • Tie down a ladder when using it outdoors and do not use ladders in windy or inclement weather
