The American Bar Foundation has announced the appointment of Rachel F. Moran as the first scholar to hold the William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law.  Moran, who recently stepped down as dean of UCLA Law School, is Dean Emerita and the Michael J. Connell Distinguished Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, and will hold the Neukom Fellows Research Chair as a visiting professor in 2015-2016.  Read more »

2015 Summer Research Diversity Fellowship
  2015 SRDF Fellows

The 2015  Summer Research Diversity Fellows , pictured above from left to right, were: Maritza Navarete of Vanderbilt University, Meagan McKinstry of Grinnell College, Jay Ruckelshaus of Duke University, and Winta Yohannes of Reed College. 

The fellowship is offered annually to diverse college sophomores and juniors who are interested in pursuing careers in law and social science.  Applications for summer 2016 will be available November 15. More information and how to apply »

During his tenure at the ABF this summer, 2015 SRDF Fellow Jay Ruckelshaus wrote an op-ed entitled, "ADA at 25: A successful law - with limits." The ABA Commission on Disability Rights also interviewed him for their "Law Student Spotlight."

The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation's CLE program, "Perspectives on Race, Communities, and Policing in Twenty-first Century America," was presented during the 2015 American Bar Association Annual Meeting. The panel, which included three members of President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, brought scholars, law enforcement, and community activists together to examine the roots of problems in relations between police and minority communities in the aftermath of violence in Ferguson, MO, Baltimore, MD, and other places.

Researcher Profile: Shari Seidman Diamond
Diamond is pictured above with ABF President David Collins in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan where Diamond presented in June. 

ABF Research Professor  Shari Seidman Diamond is also  the Howard J. Trienens Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law. An attorney and social psychologist, Diamond is one of the foremost empirical researchers on jury process and legal decision-making, including the use of science by the courts. She is currently completing a book on juries based on a unique field experiment in which cameras recorded real jury deliberations. Diamond was recently quoted in a New York Times article: Exclusion of Blacks From Juries Raises Renewed Scrutiny.
Leadership  Spotlight: Walter L. Sutton, Jr.
 Walter L. Sutton, Jr.

Walter L. Sutton, Jr. is an ABF Board Member and Associate General Counsel for Legal Administration and External Relations at Walmart, where he  advocates both internally and with external stakeholders to promote diversity within the legal profession. Prior to joining Walmart in 2005, Sutton practiced law for 35 years in Detroit, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Dallas. His law career has spanned corporate law, environmental law, and government service, and he earned a PhD in Management Science from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1989. In 2013, Sutton was the recipient of the Spirit of Excellence Award from the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession.
