Village Elections are Coming and We Need You!
Throw your hat into the ring and run for the Harper's Choice Village Board! The current two-year terms of office for three Village Board seats expire on April 30, 2017. Village Board members attend one meeting a month where they oversee village finances; they advise and take action on such matters as street and house maintenance; and
advocate for changes that will benefit all of Harper's Choice village residents.
The nomination period runs from March 1 - March 14, 2017. Information and nomination petitions will be available at Kahler Hall on March 1 and must be returned to Kahler Hall by 5:00 pm on March 14. Information and nomination petitions will also be available for download on our website beginning on March 1.

Colored Schools of Howard County
The Glenwood Library hosts a magnificent exhibit of historic photographs of ten Colored Schools once funded and operated by Howard County. The schools operated until the mid-sixties, when they became integrated. Some of the original structures still stand today, while others have been lost to time. The collection of photographs has been painstakingly restored by Mattie Hayes, Docent of the Heritage Program of Howard County Recreation & Parks. Irish Evening award-winning writer and playwright, Belinda McKeon, will be HoCoPoLitSo's guest for their annual Irish Evening this Friday! The night will also feature Narrowbacks Eileen Korn Estes, Jesse Winch, Terence Winch, Linda Hickman, and Michael Winch in a concert of traditional Irish music, with step dancers from the Culkin School. Wilde Readings HoCoPoLitSo presents the next in a series,
Wilde Readings. This monthly literary reading series features local poets and authors, as well as an open mic for interested audience members. On Tuesday, February 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., visit the Columbia Art Center (6100 Foreland Garth, Columbia) to discuss the literary works of Austin Camacho and Maritza Rivera. Explore how the craft of writing can inspire and fuel the imagination with these seasoned authors. Attendance is free of charge; no reservation required. Open mic presenters are asked to keep their readings to five minutes or less.

HCPSS Names Principal and Teacher of the Year
|

The Howard County Public School System today announced its 2017 Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year. Running Brook Elementary School Principal Troy Todd and Applications and Research Laboratory teacher Maddy Halbach were awarded the honors, respectively. Both will serve as the Howard County nominees for the Washington Post Principal and Teacher of the Year. Halbach additionally will be the Howard County nominee for Maryland State Teacher of the Year.
"The contributions made by two excellent educators, who are committed to supporting their students' success, help prepare our students for the future and build bridges to the community," said HCPSS Superintendent Renee A. Foose. "It is a testament to the growing recognition of the quality of our teachers and leaders that we had more than twice as many nominations as last year. I am delighted that these extraordinary people are being recognized this year."
Troy Todd has been the principal of Running Brook Elementary School since 2008. He has served the Howard County Public School System for over 20 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.
Todd is being recognized for his exemplary leadership and for building a positive school environment that creates a real sense of community. Todd has taken on the exciting challenge of the Elementary School Model to propel students at Running Brook Elementary School to academic and social success.
In her nomination letter, Running Brook Math Support Teacher Kristen Mangus stated that Principal Todd, "demonstrates dedication and caring for our school's children, staff and community by working hard to build positive relationships."
Maddy Halbach has been a teacher in Howard County for 14 years and an Academy of Finance instructor at the Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) since 2007. Her student-centric approach has had a powerful impact on her students.
In describing Halbach, Sharon Kramer, Career and Technology Education coordinator at ARL, says, "She empowers her students to be responsible for their own learning."
Called "one of the finest teachers I have had the pleasure of working under" by one of her former students, Halbach is being honored for helping high school students become aware of financial literacy through personal passion and high academic standards.

COVENANT CORNER
Planning your Spring/Summer alterations? Don't forget...the Covenants require architectural approval prior to the start of work. Stop by Kahler Hall to pick up the application or download one from our
webpage; click on covenant information.
Meetings to review applications are held by the Architectural Committee on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Kahler Hall, unless noted. The meeting schedule through April is otherwise as follows: 2/28, 3/14, 3/28, 4/12*, 4/25.
Applications must be submitted two weeks prior to the next meeting date in order to be placed on the agenda. Call the covenant
adviser for more information.
*The AC will meet on Wednesday, April 12 due to the Passover holiday.

CUL D'SAC BEAUTIFICATION GRANTS
Spring is just around the corner and your Harper's Choice Village Board has grant money available to help residents enhance the cul'd sac circles on their streets. Just submit a "before" photo along, with a written drawing or plan for improvements and the signatures of at least 80% of the affected neighbors. Once the plan is approved, the Association will reimburse the residents up to $200. Contact the covenant

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
