This is not a drop off program; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring 2-3 age appropriate books for your child(ren) to read aloud. Readers will be paired with and rotate among different residents and should anticipate spending 10-15 minutes with each one. Space is limited. Please email or call Susan at 410-730-0770 to register.

Protect Your Roof

Keeping up with maintenance on your roof will prevent costly repairs down the road.  Here are some tips to stave off repairs and extend the life of your roof.
  • Clean the gutters - clogged gutters may cause water to seep under the shingles and can create hidden damage (and will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes!)
  • Trim overhanging branches - damage can occur when leaves that collect on the roof retain moisture and rot on the shingles.
Regularly visually inspect your roof for damaged shingles, signs of cracking or other wear and tear.

Plan to Plant a Tree?

Did you know that the MD Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides a $25 off coupon when you purchase a tree valued at $50 or more from participating retail nurseries and garden centers? Go here to print your coupon and learn more about the program. Coupon is valid for trees listed on the Marylanders Plant Trees Recommended Tree List.
Save the Date!
2016 Columbia BikeAbout: September 17

Columbia Association's (CA) annual BikeAbout will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, with riders setting off from the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. The free, fun and informative tour presents Columbia's history and showcases the connectivity of its pathway system.

Pre-registration is not required but is encouraged via ColumbiaAssociation.org/bikeabout. Columbia BikeAbout will begin at 9:30am with riders able to start up until 10am. They are expected to complete the ride by 1pm.

This year's route is 12 miles - with the option of adding onto that with a 1.5-mile spin around Lake Kittamaqundi. The course will wind through Town Center, Hickory Ridge, Harper's Choice and Wilde Lake with interpretive stops that include the past, present and future of Downtown Columbia and Howard Community College and Columbia's commitment to preservation of the open space including the creation of Wilde Lake and the history of the 19 th  century historical buildings that border Wilde Lake.

To accommodate families with young children, a 1.5-mile ride is available around Lake Kittamaqundi on the pathway loop, offering an opportunity to learn about two elements of Columbia Town Center - the built environment and the enhanced natural landscape.

An important aspect of Columbia's design was preservation of the land. The topography, stream beds and heavily wooded areas were preserved as much as possible. Lakes were created and pathways built to make the natural environment accessible. Columbia BikeAbout is an easy way to explore the extensive 94-mile pathway system, which contributes to the high quality of life that defines Columbia.

Columbia Association is also seeking volunteers who will assist with traffic control, directions, registration, and act as guides at places of interest along the route. Flexible shifts are available between the hours of 8:30am and 2pm. Training and a free T-shirt will be provided. For more information, email Columbia.Archives@ColumbiaAssociation.org or call 410-715-6781.

Columbia BikeAbout is brought to you by Columbia Association's (CA) Columbia Archives and Open Space Management.
