When disaster strikes, our hearts go out to those affected. When disaster touches our colleagues in the micro distilling industry, the pain hits a little closer to home. "There but for the grace of God go I".
Recently, two people were badly injured in a micro distillery when ethanol vapors ignited, with explosive force. This was the result of an employee blending vodka with an electric immersion blender, reported ABC news 13 in Houston TX.

ADI President's Note: The explosion at a craft distillery in New Jersey this week is the 3rd fire or explosion in 2017. Most OSHA, fire, and building inspectors are not familiar with craft distilleries and may not know what to look for when visiting. Due to their scale, it is often not clear which industrial standards should be applied to craft distilleries, as many codes are written with large facilities in mind. At ADI, we are working hard to provide information that relates to small distilleries. -Bill Owens/President/ADI

Passage of Tax Bill brings lower levies to brewers, distillers and winemakers
by Tara Nurin, Forbes
|
Newport, OR -- Rogue Ales & Spirits distiller Jake Holshue. |
Though economists agree the Republican tax plan [signed by] the President [last Friday] functions as little more than a giant holiday present to the wealthiest American businesses and individuals, one provision included in the bill does promise to make even some of the nation's most liberal artisans happy. That provision - which represents a breakthrough for alcohol producers both small and large - reduces the federal excise tax on alcohol manufacturers, who number among the most heavily taxed business people in the United States.

Tales of the Cocktail, a troubled event,
may
have a savior
by Robert Simonsson, The New York Times
Tales of the Cocktail, the annual New Orleans convention that over the last 15 years has became a required whistle stop for people in the bar and spirits business, has recently been in danger of dissolution amid rancor and controversy.
But it may have found a savior in a new owner. The Solomon family, a prominent civic and philanthropic force in New Orleans, has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to buy the festival from Ann Tuennerman, the organization's founder, and her husband, Paul Tuennerman. If the transaction proceeds, the convention will run as scheduled in July - something many people had begun to doubt.

The festive season is almost upon us, which means parties, braais and family get-togethers are in full swing. As the party mood takes hold, people tend to let their hair down and enjoy a few drinks.
Having two glasses of wine is nothing to worry about, right? Many people believe men can have two drinks and women one and still be within the legal limit when they get behind the wheel of a car. But in reality it's much more complicated than that.
There are many myths surrounding alcohol consumption and drunk driving. In fact, you could be breaking the law without realising it.

Campari announces $5 million investment in Woody Creek Distillery
by
Distillery Trail
Campari Canada has announced an investment of $5 million for the renovation and redevelopment of their Grimsby, Ontario distillery for Forty Creek Canadian Whisky. The investment is another milestone in the European company's strategy to make Canada a priority market for investment and innovation.

Internationally-recognized for its superior taste and quality, the multi-award winning Forty Creek Whisky serves as both the fastest growing brand in its category across North America and Canada's first successfully launched whisky brand in over 70 years. Since 2014, Gruppo Campari has invested well over $200-million, including Woody Creek in Canada as part of a global strategy to prioritize the Canadian market.
