Five Vermont Organizations Receive Animating Infrastructure Grants

What does it mean to animate infrastructure? Five Vermont groups have come up with creative answers to this question and will work with artists to enliven their environments with public art.

These organizations received grants through the Council's Animating Infrastructure program, which is designed to encourage collaborative partnerships between communities and artists. The outcome is a locally driven process resulting in public art that is integrated into infrastructure improvement projects.

These five organizations were awarded grants:
  • Bethel Revitalization Initiative, Bethel -  $15,000 to support the design and creation of a mural, banners, and wooden benches in the downtown streetscape
  • Burlington City Arts, Burlington -  $15,000 to support the design of a public art component for one or more of the green infrastructure elements in City Hall Park
  • Langdon Street Alive, Montpelier -  $15,000 to support the design and installation of a light canopy over Langdon Street
  • Lincoln Community School, Lincoln - $14,904 to support the design and community creation of a mosaic on a wall outside the school
  • Revitalizing Waterbury, Waterbury - $15,000 to support the design and installation of art on the trestle bridge above the road in Waterbury Village

Student Talent and Creativity Shine at the Congressional Art Competition

Jocelyn Pike from the Lyndon Institute took top honors at the 36th Annual Congressional Art Competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute. Her winning work of art, "Peru," was selected from 161 student entries representing 35 Vermont high schools. It will be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol Complex along with other winners from congressional districts across the country.

"I am amazed at the creativity of the many talented young artists across Vermont. A job well done to all participants," said Congressman Peter Welch, who was on hand to congratulate the winner and thank the students for their participation. "I'm looking forward to seeing Jocelyn's artwork in the Capitol!"

The second and third place winners were Tyler Skroski and Eli Hammond, both from Harwood Union High School. The artwork was judged by Kate Gridley, Dianne Shullenberger, and Brooke Monte. The exhibit was hosted by the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier.
