United Way recently celebrated the conclusion of our "Empowering your Community. One Donation at a Time." fundraising campaign.
Funds raised during the campaign stay local to support effective programs that help everyone in the community learn more, earn more, and lead safer and healthier lives. Thanks to you and other generous donors, the campaign raised $1,300,363.
During the event, guest were treated to performances by Crystal Becker, a client of member agency Stone Belt Arc, and Violin Class students from member agency Boys & Girls Clubs.
Barry Lessow, United Way Executive Director, commended those who helped with the campaign. "Thank you for caring about kids who want to read a book... and seniors who need a ramp so they can live in their own home. Thank you for caring about families preparing for their first baby... and for families who work hard but have trouble making ends meet. Thank you for caring about people with diabetes... and people born with conditions that 50 years ago meant a lifetime in an institution and now can mean a life of work and creativity. And thank you for taking that caring and channeling it into action... your work, your dedication, your support of United Way will continue to empower your community throughout 2017 and years beyond."
Lauren Robel, IU Provost and Executive Vice President, and strong advocate for United Way, commented, "When we support United Way, we're honoring all the ways that we are connected within this community."
Donations support initiatives and member agency programs that strengthen the Monroe, Owen, and Greene communities in the long-run, while also helping people get back on their feet today.
Rain or shine, this Saturday, May 13th, please give what you can to feed local hungry Hoosiers by simply placing a bag (or bags) of
non-perishable food by your mailbox. National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 828 members and dedicated volunteers will collect donations and take them to central distribution points, like United Way member agency Hoosier Hills Food Bank, to help Stamp Out Hunger.
For this 25th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, organizers are challenging residents to donate generously and reach the goal of 50,000 pounds of non-perishable food for Monroe County and more than 90,000 pounds regionally.
If it is raining please put your donation in a plastic bag and tie it shut if possible. But don't let the weather keep you from donating.
Lucas Short, a Bloomington Carrier with 10 years of food drive experience shared, "I look forward to the Letter Carriers Food Drive because there is a special energy at the Post Office that day. As the day of the food drive goes by we empty the truck from the mail we start with, and come back at the end of the day with the food donations. I like seeing the trucks full of the donations! Please help me fill my truck this year! I want to be one of the most full trucks!"
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is critical to local pantries and neighbors in need. During the spring, donations can drop and food supplies are typically lower. As schools let out for the summer, the need for additional food is greater since young students don't have access to free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs. Locally, 1 in 5 children are at risk of going hungry. This Saturday, please do what you can to Stamp Out Hunger.
Doris Burton received the Mary Alice Gray Memorial Award
Doris Burton was honored with the Mary Alice Gray Memorial Award for extraordinary volunteer service at the United Way of Monroe County "Empowering Your Community" Campaign Celebration.
This award recognizes United Way volunteers who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the organization.
Doris has been involved with United Way since 1971, joining the United Way Board in 1999, serving on several committees and leading the United Way campaign at Indiana University. She has remained involved with United Way ever since and, for the past nine years, served as a member of the IU Campaign Cabinet and co-chaired the IU retirees' campaign.

Wondering how to save and pay for college? Worried about how to handle stress? Concerned about your child finishing school? Need help figuring out plans for after graduation?
Over 1,200 students, parents,
educators, service organizations, and community members have created their own 'Roadmap to Success' through our interactive website. This innovative tool allows users to navigate their way to information on higher education, the workforce, training programs, ways to pay and save for education after high school, and much more.
Launched in fall 2015, t
he site helps users increase high school success and graduate with a purposeful plan for college, certifications, work, service, etc.
The Roadmap to Success was developed in conjunction with the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and the High School Plus Coalition. It helps students plan their futures by compiling informative resources and then, through a series of tailored questions, leading them to sources that will help get them to where they want to go.
