My Mother On Mother's Day

Mother 's Day offers each one of us an opportunity to offer happy Mother 's Day wishes to our mothers or to any one person who has played the role of a mother in our lives. Growing up in Ghana, I had the privilege of living in my mother 's house until I was about twelve years old, when I moved with my younger brother to live with our dad. My dad passed on a little over two years after our move to live with him. And so, it is fair to say that my formative years were more influenced by my mother than by any one particular person.

She is a feisty woman, a strong and hardworking woman. She had some education, but I am not exactly sure to what level. However, she tends to read a lot. I have always been fascinated by her desire to read. Heaven knows if she really understood all that she read, but she told stories about what she read and often captured our attention with her stories. One such story was about Booker T. Washington. I have no idea where she got the book. But after reading the book, she told stories about Booker T. Washington, and always inspired me and my brother to act and work hard like him. Sustainability Tip
of the Week
A third grade girl wrote this letter to God - "Dear God: I like the Lord 's Prayer best of all. Did you have to write it a lot or did you get it right the first time? I have to write over again everything I ever write. "
The Fifth Sunday of Easter:

"For wisdom is more mobile than any motion, because of her pureness she pervades and penetrates all things. For she is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her. "

-Wisdom of Solomon 7: 24-25

WORSHIP

162nd Parish Annual Meeting and One Worship - May 21
The parish will hold its 162nd annual meeting on Sunday, May 21. There will be one service of worship at 10 a.m. on that day followed by brunch and the annual meeting in the parish hall. An annual report will be offered by each of the different ministries of Saint Paul's. The Nominating Committee will present its slate of candidates for vestry and delegate to the Deanery and Diocesan Convention. The worship recalls our former rector, William Hobart Hare, whose "saint's" day is May 17. He became bishop to the Great Sioux Nation and is the reason why we go on pilgrimage each summer to the Standing Rock Reservation.

Rite 13 Ceremony - May 21
Saint Paul's will honor the Rite 13 Candidates on May 21 at the 10 a.m. service. Rite 13 represents the first two years of a six-year Journey to Adulthood program that we began teaching a few years ago. Mrs. Kimberly Leach, Ms. Liz Brooks and Mr. Charlie Affel have been instrumental in teaching our candidates: Drew Warnick, Jackson Tullo, Harry Bradley, Jack Fitzpatrick, Maida Budd, Jah-Rhe Watson-Moore and Will Stutman. It is our privilege to honor these youth and to celebrate this important milestone with them. These candidates will join the Confirmation class in the fall.
TEACHING

Faith Forums Sundays at 9:15 a.m. ~  Mothers' Day
The Rector will speak of motherhood in the Bible and early church on Mothers ' Day, May 14 at 9:15 a.m. How we interpret motherhood often depends on religious and cultural understandings. We will look at the Old Testament, ancient Roman culture, Jesus ' perspective, that of Paul and the early church, and today! We will look at motherhood and its role in our understanding of God.

Church School Closing Ceremony - June 4
The Church School Closing Ceremony is scheduled for June 4 at the 9 a.m. service. If a parent has children in different classrooms, they are invited to spend some time in each classroom. The teachers we honor for all their hard work and dedication are Maria Johnson, Kathleen Karhnak-Glasby, Renee Warnick, Sherry Hamilton, Sarah Latini, Tabitha Oman, Valerie Chikwendu, Sue Proud , Lynn Williamson, Amanda Scates-Preisinger, Charlie Affel, Liz Brooks , and Kim Leach. MISSION

Mother's Day Car Wash - May 14
The Annual Mother's Day Car Wash is on Sunday, May 14 from 7:30 a.m. until noon. The Car Wash is an opportunity for the Youth of Saint Paul's to raise funds in support of our Youth mission trip to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. Youth Pilgrimage to the Standing Rock Reservation.

Thank You, Stewards!
There are a number of faithful reasons for being Christian stewards. Maybe one of the best reasons is to advocate for values we believe lead to divine living on earth.  The society in which we live has its own values. Stewards foster a community that believes abundant life is found in giving, not in getting.  (Meditations from David Mosser)
COMMUNITY

Mothers' Day Marks Last Sunday Morning Breakfast - May 14
Six breakfast teams serve up hearty meals from September to May. May 14 will be the last breakfast until next fall. A big "thank you" to all who have shopped, cooked, served, and cleaned. If you would like to help on a breakfast team next year, please contact the office at 215-242-2055 or [email protected]. Breakfast has a big impact in terms of fellowship, communication, good food, and fun. The risen Jesus said to his disciples, "Come and have breakfast" (John 21: 12).

Rogation Day Tree Tour! - May 21
Rogation Day, Sunday, May 21, is a day of prayer in the spring for a Fall church good harvest in the fall. The day is known for processions around the parish, giving rise to our festival tour of trees at 4 p.m. This will be a self-guided tour complete with map and explanations of all the trees - over twenty varieties! Pick up your guide at the Chestnut Hill Avenue exit and walk along the drive toward Bethlehem Pike and Cooke Park. Along the way, discover and learn about the trees, the Dag Hammarskjöld memorial, gospel passages about the growing seed and the mustard seed, all the way to Cooke Park where the tour ends at the Celtic Cross and a closing meditation by the Anglican Mystic Thomas Traherne (1637-1674), "you never enjoy the world aright, till you so love the beauty of enjoying it, that you are covetous and earnest to persuade others to enjoy it... It is a Paradise of God."

Youth Progressive Dinner - June 2
Saint Paul ' s Youth will take part in a progressive dinner on June 2. This will be a fun time for our Youth as they travel from one home to the other to enjoy appetizers, entr é es, desserts and many more dishes. We are looking for volunteer hosts and drivers for our Youth event. If you are interested in volunteering your home or your vehicle, please contact Manny.
PASTORAL CARE

Fellowship Hour After Sunday Worship
Please join us every Sunday morning after worship in the Dixon House from 11:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for refreshments and fellowship with other parishioners and the clergy!

We Are Here For You
When a member of Saint Paul's needs support at a time of illness or loss or other difficulty,  the clergy are the principal people who visit and support and counsel. There are also other groups, made up of parishioners, who deliver help to parishioners-a friendly face, a Eucharistic visit, a cheery arrangement of flowers, or a delicious dinner for someone just home from the hospital.

Please let us know, if you -
~ Would like to place a name on the prayer list (We ask that you obtain permission from those you are commending to the prayer list)
~ Would like a visit from Cliff, Manny, or Rob
~ Have been admitted to the hospital
~ Would like communion delivered to you by a lay Eucharistic Minister

Everyone is invited to participate in these ministries, as well as to call upon Saint Paul's pastoral care resources as the need arises.   Please click {here}  for more information or you can  contact Virginia Emlen directly at 215.242.2055 (ext. 25) or email her at vemlen@stpaulschestnuthill.org and she  will alert the Clergy.
