Washington County activates snow zones
The winter weather during the Christmas holiday created challenging travel conditions and resulted in the activation of Washington County's snow zones.
Motorists are required to have traction devices in the activated snow zone areas. The snow zone signs were changed to "chains required" in the afternoon/evening of Sunday (Dec. 24). The signs are expected to be changed back to "carry chains" later today (Dec. 27).
The three snow zones have steep grades and high elevations. Traction devices in these areas can help reduce crashes in icy, snowy weather. Failure to comply with snow zone requirements is a secondary offense, enforced when a driver has committed another offense, such as speeding, using a handheld device or driving dangerously. A snow zone citation usually carries a fine of $160.
NOTE: This information is provided here as a courtesy only. Neighborhood meetings are required before developers submit certain land use applications to the County (for areas outside cities). These meetings provide a forum for the developer, affected CPO (Community Participation Organization) and nearby property owners to discuss the proposal informally. County staff do not schedule or attend these meetings.
