Philippians 4:4-13
|
|
4
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
5
Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
6
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
9
Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
10
I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it.
11
Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have.
12
I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In
any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in
need.
13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This week we encounter Paul through the words of his letter to the Christians in Philippi. Although imprisoned, Paul nonetheless exudes joy.
Ponder these questions:
In verse 5 the word translated as "gentleness" has a more active nature to it. "Let your
consideration of others be known to everyone" may be a more accurate rendering.
Within the last 24 hours, what kindness has someone done for you to demonstrate such active consideration?
Within the next 24 hours, what kindness will you commit to do for someone else?
Among other admirable things, in verse 8 Paul urges his friends to think about "whatever is pure." To grasp this concept, consider purity's antonym. Think about food.
What makes something you eat impure?
Think about your actions.
What makes something you do impure?

Dear friends: Thank Anna Jarvis for Mother's Day as we know it. In May, 1907 St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia had a special service to honor Anna's mother who had died two years before. Anna Jarvis urged everyone to likewise honor his or her own mother, saying one's mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world." The idea caught on, and by 1914 Mother's Day was a national observance. I called my own mother yesterday, reserving a date on her busy calendar in the weeks ahead for us to have lunch. I never knew this growing up, but Mom loves lavender. She bought a purple car at one point in her life, but I simply assumed it was her version of a mid-life crisis and thought no more about it. Recently I discovered that lavender, in addition to being a color, is a flower. One of my mother's favorite flowers. Just a few miles from where my mother lives is a 5-acre farm devoted to all things lavender. Take a wild guess where Mom and I are going after lunch on the appointed day. I've done a little research in anticipation of our lavender outing and have found this flower has many uses. People make soap out of lavender, lotion out of lavender, bath salts out of lavender. There is even a Rosemary and Lavender Calming Spray, advertised as being ideal to soothe people who need "a little down time." As a test of its efficacy I believe I'll get a jug of that and discreetly spray a few uptight folks. As we gather in worship this Sunday there should be very few uptight people. Mother's Day is a joyous Children's Sunday, meaning the children will delight their mothers and us as the Children's Choir sings the song they've been practicing. Music Director Tom Pedersen will then share some of the touching story behind the hymn Jesus Loves Me during the Young People's Message, and then children through 5th grade will be dismissed to their classrooms. To make the day even more joyous, our Joyful Ringers! are also scheduled to make melodious sounds to enhance our praise. See you at St. Paul's this Sunday, friends, as we praise God and honor our mothers. In honor of mine, I'll see if I have a purple tie I can wear. And, if my Rosemary and Lavender spray arrives in time, I promise to be extra calm. Peace, A.B. Snell

Biblical Archaeology: Greek Games & Rituals
|
|
Now in its third decade, the Biblical Archaeology Forum presents a series of scholarly lectures from experts in archaeological research, history, and ancient texts to help shed light on the Biblical world. On Wednesday,
May 17, the Bender Auditorium at the Jewish Community Center (6125 Montrose Road, Rockville MD) hosts the presentation "Life and Death at Nemea," from Dr. Jorge Bravo of the University of Maryland. The Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea was the site of one of the greatest athletic festivals in Ancient Greece, on par with the Olympics. Illustrations and period writings shed light on the connection between the Games, the myth of the child-hero Opheltes in whose honor the games were held, and ancient ritual observances. St. Paul's is a co-sponsor of the Biblical Archaeology series; tickets for St. Paul's members and friends are $5; general public tickets are $10; high school students admitted free with ID. The Third Thursday Book Club will
gather on May 18, 7:30-9:00pm at the home of Jim & Rachel King to discuss J.D. Vance's critically acclaimed bestseller,
Hillbilly Elegy
. A former Marine and Yale graduate, Vance writes of the white working-class experiences his own family carried from Kentucky's impoverished Appalachian mountain communities to the rust belt town of Middletown, Ohio, and what it's like to exist within a system of social, regional, and economic decline. Adults in their 20s-40s are invited to get reading, bring a friend, and join us!

Summer Sunday School will start on
May 28 and run until
September 3
. We will have two classes during the 10:30am
worship time: one class for children ages 2-5 and the other class for children ages 6-10. We need plenty of parent or adult volunteers, plus teen helpers, to sign up for one or two Sundays to guide the classes. Each Sunday will have a theme, coloring pages, and snacks provided, and teachers are asked to plan a small craft or other activity. Sign up in the church office or contact coordinator Amy Frontz at [email protected] to get started and help make Summer Sunday School a success!

Our United Methodist Women's Book Club meets about every other month to discuss books usually chosen from the UMW reading program list. Our next Book Club meeting is Sunday,
June 4 at 12:00 PM in Room 109. We will discuss
I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban. In October 2012, when she was 15 years old, Malala Yousafzei's school bus was stopped and she was shot in the head at point blank range by Taliban leaders who objected to her attending school in Pakistan's Swat Valley. Her miraculous recovery, determination to speak out, and loving parents who fought for her rights, helped her become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. This best-seller, and many other books, are available in the church library.

Reduce Food Waste and Help Hungry Neighbors
|
|
In the U.S., 1 in 5 fruits and veggies goes to waste because of superficial imperfections (like a misshapen eggplant) or logistical errors (like a store over-ordering). Hungry Harvest works with local farmers by "reclaiming" quality produce that would otherwise be wasted and delivering it to subscribers. And, they make matching donations to charities fighting hunger. We need more St. Paul's folks to sign up for produce and identify St. Paul's as the recipient for matching donations. Use the code "SPC25" when you register, and get 25% off your first order. You can share this code with friends and family! Visit
www.hungryharvest.net
to
learn more about their mission, newly expanded delivery area, and different sign-up options. Contact Rev. Claire Matheny with questions.
