Appellate Practice Section

2017 Appellate Practice Section Chair
The Appellate Practice Section is the "youngest" Section in the VBA, so we're open to new ideas. Our mission is to improve all aspects of appellate advocacy, whether it is ensuring that the Rules of practice are "user-friendly" or helping practitioners avoid common mistakes. No matter your practice area, there may be an appeal in your future. We're here to help.

Streamlining the Rules
The Appellate Practice Section works with the Courts, the General Assembly, and various bar groups to identify and address matters that need amendment or clarification, making appellate review accessible to all.

This year, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of the Rules of Court, and will send our final recommendations to the Supreme Court of Virginia for consideration. If you have suggestions or ideas that will improve clarity, or streamline procedure, please contact our Legislative Committee Chair, Robert Loftin, at RLoftin@mcguirewoods.com or 804-775-4715. He is spearheading our review efforts.

Education
The Section is teaming up once again with the Civil Litigation Section to host another lively and timely panel discussion at the VBA Summer Meeting in July. "The Roberts Court at Age Eleven" will review the decisions and developments of the U.S. Supreme Court during the October 2016 term, which concludes only weeks before the meeting. Our panel this year will be:
  • Moderator William Hurd of Troutman Sanders
  • Toby J. Heytens of the University of Virginia School of Law
  • Deepak Gupta of Gupta Wessler PLLC
  • Marcia Coyle of The National Law Journal
Don't miss expert analysis of decisions that are hot-off-the-presses!

And, it's never too early to mark your calendars for the 2018 Appellate Summit in Richmond. Watch for more information regarding dates, speakers and topics in the coming months.

Several of our programs have been recorded and are available for viewing and CLE credit on video or podcast via VBA Online CLE.

You have a voice
One of the best things about appellate practice is how collegial the appellate bar is. Have you noticed an anomaly in the Rules? Are there aspects of appellate practice that you wish were covered by a CLE? Wish there were more course offerings closer to home? Please let us know; contact me or any Council member. We welcome your insights, suggestions and active participation.
