The 2017 Mining Matters Annual Newsletter is now available. It provides a summary of our achievements over the past year, highlights future activities and initiatives, and recognizes the generous support of individuals, corporations, associations, foundations and government.

Mining Matters Hockey Tournament hockey2
Face off on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the 11th annual Mining Matters Hockey Tournament at the Scotiabank Pond in Downsview Park, Toronto.

Sixteen teams (15 skaters and one goalie) will compete to see their name engraved on the coveted Caracle Cup! All skill levels are welcome; only a desire to network and join in friendly competition is mandatory.

With team entry, each player will receive:
  • Three games guaranteed
  • Personalized jersey
  • Hockey socks
  • Complimentary food and drinks throughout the day
  • Chance to win raffle and cash prizes
Don't have a team? No problem. Individuals without a team wanting to play can be placed subject to space.

The Hockey Tournament is an important annual fundraising event that helps support Mining Matters goal to educate students, teachers and the public about Earth science and the importance of mineral resources.

Women Who Rock women
Women Who Rock is an organization with a mission to empower women and improve gender diversity in the mining industry. Their unique annual Auction for Action connects aspiring young women with some of the most celebrated leaders in the mining industry, developing mentoring relationships to inspire the next generation of mining professionals.

Proceeds from the Auction for Action held on November 7, 2017 were donated to Mining Matters in support of our work with Manitoba Girl Guides of Canada. Mining Matters has partnered with Girl Guides to compile age-appropriate Earth science and mineral resources learning activities that can be completed to receive a Geoscience Badge. 

We wish to thank Women Who Rock and all those involved for their generous continued support of our education and outreach efforts.

Mining Rocks in Yellowknife Yellowknife
This past September, we partnered with the Government of the Northwest Territories, Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (GNWT ITI), TerraX Minerals Inc. (TerraX), Yellowknife Education Division No. 1 and Range Lake North School to deliver a three-day school program and two professional development workshops for teachers in Yellowknife.
During the school program, students tested the properties of minerals, learned about the mining cycle and environmental activities in mining, matched career descriptions with education requirements, engaged with industry role models from GNWT ITI and TerraX, made connections between minerals and everyday items, carved soapstone and crafted pendants from polished amethyst and copper. The program ended with a field trip, led by prospector Jessica Bjorkman, along the Ranney Hill Geological Interpretive Trail.
Teachers who participated in the professional development workshops engaged with industry professionals and received  Mining Matters curriculum-linked lesson plans, hands-on resources and the training required to effectively implement the resources in their instructional practice.

Mining Matters Teacher Training and School Programs is pleased to announce the following news and upcoming events. Please share this information with educators in your network.
Teachers' Day at the PDAC Convention - Registration Now Open teachersday
  "Big Data" is the theme of the 2018 Teachers' Day Program at the PDAC. The program will focus on the exponential growth, availability and use of data in Earth science, mineral exploration and mining. This unique professional development opportunity will include industry presenters and access to the Trade Show. Teachers will participate in hands-on workshops and obtain classroom resources to engage their students.

The 2018 Teachers' Day is designed to be an interactive and stimulating learning experience for participants. Teachers will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world's largest annual mineral exploration convention and network with industry professionals and fellow educators.

Mineral Resources and Mining Education Tours MRMET
The Canadian Ecology Centre and Mining Matters invite educators and mineral development advisors from across Canada to participate in the 2018 Mineral Resources and Mining Education Tours. The tours provide unique opportunities for professional development in Earth sciences, mineral resources and mining. Participants will tour mining operations, explore sites of geological significance, learn about the m odern technology being applied to the discovery of mineral resources, marvel at the wealth of career opportunities, and learn about the industry's social responsibilities to the environment and communities.  
 
The tours are generously sponsored by the Ontario Mining Association. Registration is $50 per tour and includes field trip transportation, accommodation, meals and resources for use in classrooms and communities.

Online Tutorials for Teachers tutorials
Mining Matters , in partnership with Penda Productions, has produced a series of online tutorials to showcase our excellent resources and make them accessible to an even larger audience of teachers. The tutorials replicate fundamental aspects of the prerequisite in-person professional development workshop we provide to teachers wanting to implement our Earth science curriculum resources.  Teachers who are unable to attend a workshop will be able to complete the training requirements for the resources, previously trained teachers will be able to use the tutorials for ongoing support and teachers inheriting a resource from a previously trained teacher can learn about the material.

The tutorials are available in English and French and can be viewed on our website by registering an account.

groundWORK groundwork
To support and motivate educators teaching Earth science, Mining Matters publishes groundWORK, an annual, bilingual educator newsletter, designed to help nurture students' natural curiosity about Earth science and mineral resources. Filled with informative articles, news about our available resources, hands-on activities, field trip suggestions, links to teaching resources, contests, Earth science tidbits and more; groundWORK provides a wealth of supplemental minerals education resources. We invite you to explore and share our 2017 issue of groundWORK.

WHERE Challenge Now Accepting Submissions! WHERE
The 2018 WHERE Challenge, sponsored by Teck, is underway and accepting entries! This annual contest challenges students across Canada between the ages of 9 and 14, to demonstrate their knowledge of Earth's non-renewable resources in a creative fashion while competing for $10,000 in cash prizes. Participants are asked to answer the questions: "What on Earth is in their stuff?" and "WHERE on Earth does it come from?"

Entries can be in the form of literature, media or graphic design. Both English and French submissions are encouraged. The contest closes on March 8, 2018.

Please share information about the WHERE Challenge with students and teachers, and encourage them to spread the word about this fantastic opportunity to learn about the importance of non-renewable resources in our everyday life. Visit the WHERE Challenge website for further information .
