"Total Solar Eclipses:
Chasing the Lunar Umbra"

For earthbound observers a total solar eclipse involves a coincidence of various simultaneous events: new moon, near alignment of the lunar orbital nodes with the Sun-Earth line, predominance of the subtended lunar angular size over that of the Sun, and geographic accessibility of the path of the Moon's umbral shadow.
As an umbraphile of limited experience (two total eclipses and one doesn't-really-count annular eclipse), Dr. Dennison will describe some of these phenomena. With the total eclipse on August 21, 2017 in mind, he will discuss the opportunities for scientific observation, astrophotography, and simply astounding observations that the All-American Eclipse will provide, weather permitting.

We are just finishing another successful Paths to Creative Retirement weekend. People came from as far away as Anchorage, Alaska, to explore the many ways to live a satisfying retirement. Many thanks to our facilitators Dan Beerman, Bill Carpenter, Carla Greenfield, Dave Greenfield, Deborah Grey, Rebecca Heartz, Ken Macfarlane, Terry Peters, Lori Postal, Arnold Willen and Judith Young. The program is so successful because these people work diligently to facilitate meaningful exercises, because they listen to the participants and one another and because they model what successful retirement means.
Please take advantage of some of the wonderful connections with the rest of UNC Asheville coming up. Members of Bulldog Athletics will be at the Reuter Center on Monday, April 24, practicing Random Acts of Kindness. Be sure to say hello! Wild Edibles by Roger Klinger
Have you wondered about whether you can eat those pretty yellow mushrooms growing in your back yard? Or wondered if jewelweed really treats poison ivy and where you can find it? These are just a couple of questions that naturalist, ethnobotanist, writer and guide Roger Klinger will explore during this presentation on wild edibles.
Roger has a passion for the exciting and wondrous world of wild edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms found in the mountains of Western NC and our own backyards. He will explore the history and folklore of some of the most delicious and most easily identifiable wild plants.
A former naturalist/educator with the Audubon Society, the National Park Service and the Smithsonian Institution, Roger is passionately devoted to the earth and celebrating the wonders of nature. He served as Curator of Natural History for the St. Mary's City Commission. Also, for many years, he has written a monthly column for a variety of newspapers on wild edible and medicinal plants.
This event is free and open to the public.

This is a weekly event for students and families to get homew ork help and a free meal for the whole family. This program provides help to families living in poverty by tutoring and encouraging kids and the parents who struggle to help their kids.

Caitlin Han: a welcoming face
of OLLI

OLLI members and visitors who come to the Reuter Center certainly appreciate the welcoming face and calm presence of Caitlin Han, OLLI's Member Relations Manager. Caitlin is the "go-to" person for a variety of tasks, whether it is registering for classes, paying fees, obtaining a parking decal, or just finding out more about the program. She is also a very good listener.
"Sometimes people just need someone to listen," Caitlin says. "Then I can help them find a solution to their problem. It's one of my favorite things about the job."

Caledonia Carolina: Scottish Music
at the Roots of Old-Time Appalachia
 Presented by Grammy-winning guitarist Bruce Nemerov, Caledonia Carolina is a musical trio that includes the talents of well-known Asheville musicians Michael Garner (fiddle) and Chris Abel (flute and Celtic whistle). The trio performs 17th and 18th century Scottish tunes demonstrating how the music of North Carolina's early settlers evolved into the "Old-Time" mountain music of the 19th and 20th centuries. Informative discussions throughout the program illustrate the special bond between the music of Scotland and WNC.

Plan to attend this talk by DeWayne Barton on how
Hood Hood Huggers International LLC is raising awareness of "Affrilachia," the African-American communities in Appalachia. Hood Huggers International, LLC offers services in these three categories: social enterprise, the Pearson Plan, and the arts. A key way Barton pursues his mission is through the organization's Hood Tours, which shuttle participants in a brightly painted van through Asheville's historically African-American neighborhoods.
Barton says that a main goal of Hood Tours is giving back to the community. "African-American neighborhoods in Asheville are being left behind," he says. "There's a lack of basic infrastructure, connections, and momentum. We've got to have more of that. Our mission is to help create it." One way that Hood Huggers does this is through its Pearson Plan, which connects community members through the arts, environmental stewardship and social enterprise to create sustainable infrastructure and lasting community relationships.
This presentation is part of the "More than a Month" series, providing information throughout the year to raise awareness for OLLI members about African American culture and politics locally and nationally.

Arbor Day Celebration
 UNC Asheville announces its first Arbor Day celebration. The observance of Arbor Day is one of five standards of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree Campus USA program. During 2017 UNC Asheville will be working toward becoming a designated "Tree Campus."
On
Friday, April 28, UNC Asheville Grounds staff will be leading a tree planting project, two campus tree tours and several educational demonstrations on the Quad. The culmination of Arbor Day will be a ceremonial tree planting on the Quad with Chancellor Grant.
