450+ Independent Bookstores Invite You to a Nationwide Party for Independent Bookstore Day!

Four years ago, several dozen independent bookstores in California decided to celebrate their shared commitment to bookselling and community building and thank their customers for their support by creating California Bookstore Day. The celebration was so well-received that it spawned an annual national event - Independent Bookstore Day, celebrated this year on Saturday, April 29. More than 450 independent bookstores in 48 states have organized special events and activities, and they all will be selling a selection of special merchandise produced exclusively for Independent Bookstore Day. Click here to find a list of all participating bookstores; I hope there is one in your community. If not, and if you're interested in buying any of the special merchandise, you can contact a participating bookstore on the day after the event to see if they have any remaining and can ship to you. You can't buy anything in advance, and the special gift items are only available in participating independent bookstores.

Now In Paper - Estranged Sisters Test Relationship As WW II Engulfs France

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This family drama about two French sisters caught up in World War II has proved to be something of a surprise and lasting hit since it was published in hardcover more than two years ago. The novel was well received and deserving of its praise, but it was given a boost by the runaway success of All The Light We Cannot See, which had been published nine months earlier and had readers clamoring for another novel about family set in France during the war. The Nightingale became a go-to book for many independent booksellers, and the book took off. The paperback printing was delayed for more than a year, but it finally arrives this week, on the heels of the paperback release of All the Light. Here's a brief description:

Younger, bolder sister Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann lives a quiet and content life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. When World War II strikes and Antoine is sent off to fight, the sisters' father sends Isabelle to help her older sister cope. As the war progresses, it's not only the sisters' relationship that is tested, but also their strength and their individual senses of right and wrong. With life as they know it changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms for each of them.
