Winter
Fire Safety Tips
According to information from the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), home fires occur more in winter than any other season. Camden County Fire Rescue joins the NFPA in sharing the following tips:
**Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source like wood stoves, fireplaces, radiators, or space heaters.
**Plug only 1 heat-producing appliance (such as a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time.

Changes to CodeRED
Recently, there was a change to the short code (number) from which you receive CodeRED SMS text message and Weather Warning messages, to 76993.
No action is required to continue receiving CodeRED messages, but if you have CodeRED saved as a contact in your phone, you may want to update it to the new number (76993).

Get Help Evacuating for a Hurricane
The Camden County Health Department maintains the Registry of residents in our area who may require transport and medical assistance during a hurricane evacuation. Those who have no other resources such as family, friends, neighbors, or church members to help them if they need to evacuate, may sign up. Residents must apply to be on the registry. To apply, residents should call the Camden County Health Department in Woodbine at 912.576.3040 or in St. Marys, call 912.882.8515. You may also print the forms below and mail them to:

Sheriff's Office Begins Explorer Post
The Camden County Sheriff's Office has begun an Explorer Post for youth that are interested in the field of law enforcement. Applicants for the Explorer Post must be between 14 and 20 years old.

Message from the County Administrator
Your county government is hard at work planning for Camden County's future. Earlier in December, we spent several days working on the 2018-2023-2033 Strategic Plan and the Camden County Action Agenda for 2018. I look forward to the Board of County Commissioners formally adopting these items in early 2018.
I'd like to invite you and your families to take part in several upcoming opportunities the County is currently offering. Please join us in the 2017 Showcase Camden County Photo Contest by submitting your photographs to the contest, or recycle your Christmas Tree in January by bringing it to the Old Still Yard Waste site.
Camden County is always looking for more ways to connect and engage Camden County citizens with the work that is being done on your behalf. Recently, Camden County Fire Rescue joined social media to bring more information to you. There is now also an opportunity for you to receive weekly news updates directly to your inbox.
Below, you can read more about the great progress we are making to bring Spaceport Camden to Camden County. In addition, we are excited about the opportunities that the proposed Research and Innovation Park could spark in our community and throughout coastal Georgia.

2017 Showcase Camden County Photo Contest Deadline Extended
The deadline for the 2017 Showcase Camden County Photo Contest has been extended to Friday, December 29, 2017. Photographers are asked to submit their best photos of Camden County, Georgia and its activities, attractions and events, as well as historic and scenic locations.
The 2017 photo contest calls for photos to be submitted under one of the following categories: Landscapes, Nature/Wildlife, Transportation, and Current Events/People. Contestants may submit no more than two (2) entries per category or up to eight (8) entries total. A committee will select a winner from each category and one overall winner will be chosen from the top photos in each category.

Camden County Plans
Innovation and Research Park to Complement Spaceport
The Camden County Board of Commissioners released a report finding that a Spaceport Camden Innovation and Research Park will lead to expanded job growth and investment benefits for Camden County residents, as well as outside aeronautical firms looking to launch new projects. County leaders requested the analysis from Astralytical, a space analytics firm, to assess the opportunities an aerospace research park would provide.

Camden County Employees Recognized for Excellence and Years of Service
Camden County Employees were recognized for their years of service at a special ceremony that also included the announcement of two recipients of the Camden County Shining Star Award. Those recognized for their service included 38 employees that reached a 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, or 35 years of service milestones in 2017.
The Shining Star Award offers Camden County employees the opportunity to spotlight the great work being done by a co-worker, department, or team of colleagues. This award recognizes and illustrates excellence as a County value. All full and part-time staff, who have been employed at the County for at least one year, and are below the level of director, were eligible to be nominated individually or as a department or team. This year both an individual and a department were selected as the 2017 Shining Stars. Captain Lisa Boyett of Camden County Fire Rescue and the Camden County Public Works Department were selected as the 2017 Shining Stars.

Christmas Tree Recycling
The Camden County Solid Waste Authority has partnered with the Camden County Extension Office, 4-H, and the Georgia Forestry Commission to host a Christmas tree recycling event on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Old Still yard waste site located at 4884 Old Still Road in Kingsland. Trees may be dropped off between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
"The Solid Waste Authority is excited to work with our local partners in this County-wide recycling event," said Jimmy Starline, Chair of the Solid Waste Authority. "This is a safe and responsible option for disposing your Christmas trees while doing something good for the environment."
Seedlings will be given to the first 100 participants. Everyone is encouraged to give a gift to nature this holiday season by recycling your Christmas tree. Your tree of Christmas past can give our community a cleaner future.

Camden County Deputy
Receives Award from Governor Deal
On December 7, 2017, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal presented the Governor's Public Safety Awards at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) in Forsyth, Georgia. Camden County Sheriff's Office, Sergeant Russell "Rusty" Prescott, received a Lifesaving Award from Governor Deal.
Sgt. Prescott saved the life of a motorist during a car crash on Interstate 95 in Camden County on November 8, 2016. Sgt. Prescott was able to pull the trapped driver from a burning car.

Sgt. Prescott was one of eleven public safety officers receiving the award. Governor Deal presented the Lifesaving Medal to each of the eleven officers for the six incidents that had occurred throughout the State of Georgia during 2016.
Sheriff Jim Proctor said, "I am overjoyed that Sgt. Prescott received the Lifesaving Award Medal from Governor Deal. The act of courage he demonstrated on Novenber 8th, 2016 saved the life of a motorist travelling on Interstate 95 in Camden County. Sgt. Prescott's leadership and professionalism is exemplary of all the employees of The Camden County Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Prescott's dedication to the law enforcement profession is greatly appreciated."

Steve Howard Named
Transportation Technology Game Changer
Camden County Administrator and Spaceport Camden Project Lead, Steve Howard, has been named one of Georgia's ten Transportation Technology Game Changers by the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG).
TAG's membership includes Georgia's most innovative technology companies and has become one of Georgia's premiere economic development engines. With 35,000 members, 2,000 member companies, and more than 200 events per year, TAG unites Georgia's technology community and fosters an innovative and connected marketplace that stimulates and enhances Georgia's tech-based economy.

Camden County Receives Grant for Water Quality Improvements
The Camden County Board
of Commissioners recently announced the award of a $204,375 Section 319 (h) Nonpoint
Source Implementation Grant. The funds are provided by the US Environmental Protection
Agency and are administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources-Environmental
Protection Division (EPD). The grant funding will be used for septic system remediation and
water quality improvements for Horsepen Creek in an effort to reduce pollutants in the St. Marys
River.

"We are excited for the opportunity to work with the Georgia EPD on this project," said County Administrator Steve Howard. "We value working with our partners, both locally and in the State of Georgia, to make a positive difference for Camden County."
Additionally, Camden County will join with the St. Marys Riverkeeper, the Georgia Department of Environmental Health, St. Marys River Management Committee, and the University of Georgia to complete this project. The total project cost, including in-kind services, is over $375,000.

Major General Robert Dickman to Join Spaceport Camden Steering Committee
Major General Robert S. Dickman, the former commander of the 45th Space Wing and Director of the Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral, FL is joining the Spaceport Camden Steering Committee. An executive director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and corresponding member of the International Academy of Astronautics, General Dickman also served as vice commander of what is now the 50th Space Wing at Schriever AFB, CO, responsible for operating all Air Force on-orbit satellite systems; Director of Air Force Space Systems in the Pentagon; the first Department of Defense Space Architect; the senior military officer at the National Reconnaissance Office and the Deputy for Military Space in the office of the Undersecretary of the Air Force.

Camden County Receives Grant for Coastal Georgia Greenway
The Camden County Board of Commissioners recently received a $18,600 grant for Phase I of the Gum Branch Preserve Trail through the Coastal Georgia Greenway funding from the Coastal Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
"We are quite pleased to receive these funds," said Camden County Grants Manager Julie Haigler. "This is a great opportunity for us to work with our partners and expand the trail program."
The grant, combined with SPLOST, in-kind, and Camden County Public Service Authority (PSA) resources will construct an eight foot wide trail that is 2,000 linear feet in length. Construction of this phase of the project should be complete by July 2018 and will connect users to Howard Peeples Park and City of Kingsland sidewalks.
This project is part of the Coastal Georgia Greenway, a 155-mile trail system that connects South Carolina to Florida through Georgia's six coastal counties.

Camden County Administrator and Spaceport Camden project lead, Steve Howard joined the largest players in the aerospace industry for the first meeting of President Donald Trump's National Space Council at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
The National Space Council is chaired by Vice President Mike Pence and is comprised of cabinet secretaries and department heads from across the Executive Branch.

Kingsland By-Pass Phase I Update
In March 2017, construction began for the Kingsland By-Pass Phase I.
This project is the beginning of a four-lane hurricane evacuation route for southern Camden County. Phase I stretches from Kings Bay Road to the west side of Exit 6 on I-95 and construction should take approximately three years.
The first task was to begin clearing of the Right-of-Way for utility relocation to begin. Currently, approximately 90% of the land clearing and approximately 55% of the new utility installation and relocation are complete. Recently, crews began working on road drainage and shaping of the road bed.
Road design has changed to incorporate vegetative islands in certain places along the route. This will allow Camden County to plant flowers in those locations.
