____________________________________________________________________

Root Cause features work by a selection of artists who've worked in the K113 Sculpture Studio at Long Beach City College over the past twenty years. The essence of the exhibition is the nature of the K113 Studio environment itself: open, evolving, committed and engaged; supportive, yet critical; inquisitive, studious, and extremely industrious.

After starting in our program, these Alumni have moved on to places like: UCLA, CSULB, UC Riverside, CSU Fullerton, UC Irvine, Otis College of Art & Design, California College of the Arts, Claremont Graduate University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Yale University. They are teachers, exhibition preparators, studio assistants, toy designers, welders, fabricators, film makers, and theater set designers. A few are currently working on their BAs, some on their MFAs, and one has over 22K instagram followers/fans of his work. Their commonality lies in their experience of the rigorous efforts and unbinding love of making that emanates from K113.

Working in a wide range of materials and processes, these twenty-five artists have set out on a path of discovery looking for the existent possibilities in their daily lives as fodder for their artistic practice. In this exhibition, we get glimpses of the personal and political with work that addresses issues concerning identity, contemporary culture, and wonders of the natural world.

As faculty coordinator of the Visual & Media Arts Sculpture Program, it's been an immense pleasure for me to work with all of these talented, generous individuals many of whom have become cherished friends and will always be members of my artistic family. The supportive community they established in the K113 Sculpture Studio has been a significant part of their education. Lastly, a special thanks to sculptor Adam Teraoka who, as adjunct faculty and VMA Shop Technician, has continually provided a layer of technical support and 3-D analysis that would be missing without him.
