- Digital Rochester announced the winner of its 2017 Technology Woman of the Year Award this morning at a breakfast ceremony at Casa Larga Vineyards. The winner was selected from 14 nominees in the technology field, who live, work, and make an impact on the Greater Rochester area.
Award Winner:
Garland J. Nichols, Vice President of Information Security for Research & Product Development, Xerox Corporation
With a preemptive, proactive approach, Nichols' team at Xerox has delivered 19 security certifications to support over $200 million in government business and deployed secure coding training to over 1,000 software developers in one year. They strive to educate cybersecurity trends to many cross-functional teams and instill security into the product lifecycle.
Throughout Nichols' 25-year career in various leadership roles, she has enjoyed bridging the gap between technical and business, which included service partner programs, coverage strategy, product marketing and launch, business operations, program management, product delivery, engineering, and research.
Within her management positions, Garland has mentored women and men in career development, helping them take risks in new opportunities. She sought female candidates with cybersecurity degrees to join her group two years ago, and ensures a diverse candidate pool in any job opening.
Technology Woman of the Year is designed to recognize, celebrate, and make visible the achievements of women in high technology fields. Through this award, women who work in these professions are encouraged to stay in the Rochester area, mentor young women, and contribute to the economic growth of the region. Evaluation and judging criteria for the award is based on sustained contributions to the technology profession, contributions advancing the status, opportunities, and employment for women in the technology professions, and contributions to the community.
