Welcome Spring!
How glorious spring is this year! Heritage week weather was beautiful
--- we are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. Spring brings lots of activity for us, too, as we look forward to our luncheon on May 16th. Please make your reservations now. This is the highlight of a year's work, and the time we give out our grants.
As our May luncheon draws nearer, please think about joining one of our committees. We are always looking for volunteers. One of the pluses of our membership is that you can be a contributor only, participate in our luncheons and events, or get more involved by serving as a volunteer on one of our committees. You can see a list of our committees below.
Whatever you choose to do, we appreciate your membership!
It was great to see many of you at Lean Ensemble's reading of Love, Loss and What I Wore. It was a fun evening! We are thankful to the board of this theatrical organization for contributing half of the proceeds of the performance to WIP, a very generous gift.

Annual Meeting May 16th at Colleton River

This year's annual meeting will feature reports from those who are completing work on the $80,000 in grants awarded last May on the theme "Providing Safe Shelter for our Citizens: Crisis, Temporary, and Permanent." That includes our Habitat for Humanity house, which is nearing completion! We will also learn who the recipients are for this year's grants on the theme, "Strengthening Options for the Elderly." This luncheon is the highlight of our year, since all of us have an opportunity to meet the people whose organizations use our philanthropy to serve others. It is always deeply moving.

Can You Share Your Talents?

At the annual meeting on May 16th you will have an opportunity to express an interest in sharing your talents with our organization if you are able to do so. There will be sign up sheets on the tables at the meeting on which you can express your interest in joining one of our committees. They work throughout the year to support our philanthropic efforts. Each committee is headed by one of our WIP board members. Here is a description of their work:
Communications Committee: Susan Hooker, Chair
Develops internal communications for WIP, the newsletter and member events reminders, as well as external communications including PR. Communications also does our membership brochure, grants brochure, any other WIP publications, and keeps our Web content up-to-date.
Education Committee: Kaye Black, Chair
Provides information and encouragement about philanthropy and the power of collective giving. (TIP: You don't have to be wealthy to be a philanthropist!) They also provide education related to our grant themes, create the program for the fall luncheon, and provide conversation topics for the Philanthropy Tea.
Events Committee: Peaches Peterson, Chair
Plans and coordinates the fall luncheon, spring annual meeting/ luncheon, holiday party, and the Philanthropy Tea. This committee is responsible for our fun, and they have a lot of fun doing so.
Grants Committee: Kathleen Bateson, Chair
Each year, the Grants Committee provides members with several possible choices for themes for the coming year's grants. The board approves those choices that are presented to the membership for a vote. The committee then develops and follows a timeline for solicitation of grants and the evaluation of applications. The committee recommends award recipients to the Board. At the end of the cycle, they work with the grant recipients to provide information on outcomes for the annual meeting.

The membership committee recruits women in Beaufort County to become members of WIP, plans orientation programs for new members and develops retention programs for all members, such as the neighborhood exchanges. They also collect and update information for our directory.

Love, Loss and What I Wore

The Lean Ensemble performance of "Love, Loss and What I Wore," on Wednesday, April 19, at Main Street Theater featured five women from WIP. This wonderfully touching and often hysterical Nora Ephron piece about poignant moments in the lives of eight women created a beautiful evening for a packed house. We thank the theater company for their generous donation of half the proceeds to WIP.

Sea Pines Neighborhood Exchange

A Neighborhood Gathering of WIP members and their guests was held at the Sea Pines home of Hester Hodde on the afternoon of Thursday, March 30th. Members from Sea Pines, Port Royal, Berkeley Hall, Long Cove, Oldfield, Palmetto Hall, Rose Hill and Spanish Wells were invited to enjoy fellowship and hear WIP member and Family Promise executive director Lynda Halpern give a talk about her organization. WIP president, Margaret McManus spoke on the topic of the unique nature of women's philanthropy. Those talks sparked a great discussion among the guests about WIP and its place in our community.
